Status Ailments
Status ailments in Persona 4 can turn the tide of battle, either in your favor or against you. Understanding how to inflict, cure, and prevent them is crucial for dungeon crawling success. This section details each ailment, its effects, and the best strategies for managing them.
General Strategies for Status Ailments
- Stock up on items: Always carry a good supply of status-healing items. They are often cheaper and more readily available than relying solely on Persona skills.
- Prioritize healing: Certain ailments, like Panic or Exhaustion, can severely cripple your party. Prioritize curing these immediately.
- Exploit enemy weaknesses: Many Shadows are susceptible to specific status ailments. Using these can grant you "1 More!" turns and make battles significantly easier.
- Equip accessories: Some accessories provide resistance or immunity to specific ailments. Check the Shiroku Store or treasure chests for these valuable items.
- Persona skills: Fuse Personas with skills that cure or prevent ailments, such as Patra, Me Patra, Energy Shower, or Trafuri.
Specific Status Ailments and Their Cures
1. Poison
Effect: The affected character loses a small amount of HP at the start of each turn. This can quickly add up in longer battles.
- Cure Items:
- Disinfectant: Cures Poison for one ally. Can be purchased at Shiroku Store for 300 Yen.
- Medical Kit: Cures Poison for all allies. Found in treasure chests or as enemy drops.
- Cure Skills:
- Posumudi: Cures Poison for one ally. Learned by various early-game Personas.
- Me Posumudi: Cures Poison for all allies. A more advanced skill.
- Strategy: Poison is a common ailment, especially in the early dungeons like Yukiko's Castle. Keep your HP topped off and use Disinfectants liberally to avoid unnecessary damage.
2. Panic
Effect: The affected character may randomly attack allies, use items on enemies, or flee from battle. This is one of the most disruptive ailments.
- Cure Items:
- Sedative: Cures Panic for one ally. Purchased at Shiroku Store for 500 Yen.
- Cure Skills:
- Patra: Cures Panic for one ally. Essential early-game skill.
- Me Patra: Cures Panic for all allies. A highly valuable skill for party-wide recovery.
- Strategy: Panic can lead to a quick game over if not addressed immediately. Always have Sedatives or a Persona with Patra/Me Patra ready. Prioritize curing any party member afflicted with Panic.
3. Fear
Effect: The affected character may randomly flee from battle or become unable to act. If they flee, they are removed from the battle and cannot be called back until the fight ends.
- Cure Items:
- Peach Seed: Cures Fear for one ally. Often found in treasure chests or as rare enemy drops.
- Cure Skills:
- Patra: Cures Fear for one ally.
- Me Patra: Cures Fear for all allies.
- Strategy: Fear is particularly dangerous due to the chance of a party member fleeing. If a key damage dealer or healer flees, your battle strategy can collapse. Cure Fear as quickly as possible.
4. Exhaustion
Effect: The affected character's Attack and Defense are significantly lowered. This makes them less effective in combat and more vulnerable.
- Cure Items:
- Energy Drink: Cures Exhaustion for one ally. Can be purchased at Shiroku Store for 400 Yen.
- Cure Skills:
- Energy Shower: Cures Exhaustion for one ally.
- Me Energy Shower: Cures Exhaustion for all allies.
- Strategy: While not as immediately catastrophic as Panic or Fear, Exhaustion can prolong battles and increase HP/SP consumption. Cure it to maintain optimal party performance.
5. Dizzy
Effect: The affected character cannot act for one turn. They also become more vulnerable to critical hits.
- Cure Items:
- Headband: An accessory that can prevent Dizzy. Found in various dungeons.
- No specific item cures Dizzy directly; it usually wears off after one turn.
- Cure Skills:
- No specific skill cures Dizzy directly.
- Strategy: Dizzy is usually a temporary nuisance. Focus on protecting the dizzied character and continuing your assault. If multiple characters are dizzied, you might be in trouble.
6. Silence
Effect: The affected character cannot use Persona skills.
- Cure Items:
- Mouthwash: Cures Silence for one ally. Purchased at Shiroku Store for 200 Yen.
- Cure Skills:
- Mutudi: Cures Silence for one ally.
- Me Mutudi: Cures Silence for all allies.
- Strategy: Silence can be devastating for magic-focused party members like Yukiko or Yosuke. Keep Mouthwash handy, especially when facing Shadows known to inflict Silence.
7. Enervation
Effect: The affected character's SP is slowly drained each turn.
- Cure Items:
- Snuff Soul: Restores a small amount of SP. Can be found in dungeons or purchased.
- No specific item cures Enervation directly; it usually wears off after a few turns.
- Cure Skills:
- No specific skill cures Enervation directly.
- Strategy: Enervation is more of a long-term threat, especially during extended dungeon crawls. Manage your SP carefully and consider using items like Snuff Soul if it becomes problematic.
8. Rage
Effect: The affected character's Attack increases, but their Defense decreases, and they can only use physical attacks. They will also prioritize attacking enemies.
- Cure Items:
- Calming Mask: Cures Rage for one ally. Found in treasure chests or as rare drops.
- Cure Skills:
- Trafuri: Cures Rage for one ally.
- Strategy: Rage can be a double-edged sword. For physical attackers like Chie or Kanji, it might even be beneficial in some situations. However, for healers or magic users, it's a liability. Evaluate the situation before curing.
9. Confuse
Effect: The affected character may randomly attack allies, use items on enemies, or throw money (Yen) away.
- Cure Items:
- Sedative: Cures Confuse for one ally. (Shares item with Panic)
- Cure Skills:
- Patra: Cures Confuse for one ally. (Shares skill with Panic and Fear)
- Me Patra: Cures Confuse for all allies.
- Strategy: Similar to Panic, Confuse is highly disruptive. The loss of Yen can be annoying, but attacking allies is the main concern. Cure immediately.
