Beyond the main story, Persona 4 offers challenging optional content for players seeking an extra test of skill and powerful rewards. These secret bosses and dungeons are often the toughest encounters in the game.
Margaret (Velvet Room Challenge):
- How to Unlock: To fight Margaret, you must complete the True Ending on a New Game+ playthrough. Additionally, you must have maxed out the 'Empress' Social Link (Margaret) in your previous playthrough. On your NG+ run, defeat the final boss of Yomotsu Hirasaka, then return to the Velvet Room on the last day (March 20th) before leaving Inaba.
- Strategy: Margaret is arguably the hardest boss in the game. She has no weaknesses and resists all elements. She uses powerful Almighty attacks, can summon multiple Personas, and has a strict turn limit. You'll need a fully optimized party, maxed-out Personas (especially Izanagi-no-Okami), and a deep understanding of combat mechanics.
- Reward: 'Omnipotent Orb' accessory (grants immunity to all elemental attacks except Almighty).
The Reaper (Optional Dungeon Boss):
- How to Encounter: The Reaper is a recurring secret boss in Persona games. In Persona 4, you can encounter him by opening 20 treasure chests in a single dungeon visit. After the 20th chest, the next chest you open will contain the Reaper. You'll hear chains rattling as a warning.
- Strategy: The Reaper is extremely powerful, with high stats and access to all elemental 'dyne' spells and Almighty attacks. He has no weaknesses and resists all elements. He also gets two turns per round. You'll need a high-level party (80+) and powerful Personas. Using a 'Growth' Persona (like Tam Lin) with 'Enduring Soul' can help.
- Reward: 'Reaper's Robe' armor (high defense, +10 to all stats).
Hollow Forest (Golden Exclusive Dungeon):
- How to Unlock: This dungeon is exclusive to Persona 4 Golden. It becomes available on January 2nd if you have achieved the True Ending path. You must visit Marie in the Velvet Room on January 2nd to start her Social Link (Aeon) and then max it out before the end of the game.
- Strategy: The Hollow Forest is a unique dungeon where your items and equipment are reset. You must rely on items found within the dungeon. The boss, 'Kusumi-no-Okami', is a challenging fight that requires careful resource management and strategic use of the limited items you find.
- Reward: Marie joins the party permanently, and you unlock her ultimate Persona, Kaguya.
