Elemental Strengths & Weaknesses
Understanding elemental strengths and weaknesses is fundamental to success in Persona 5 Royal's combat. Each enemy, including bosses, has specific resistances, nullifications, weaknesses, and even drains against the six core elements: Nuclear, Psi, Bless, Curse, Fire, Ice, Electric, and Wind. Exploiting these vulnerabilities is key to efficient combat, allowing you to deal massive damage, conserve SP, and secure victory quickly.
The game features a rock-paper-scissors dynamic for most elements. For instance, Fire is strong against Ice, Ice against Electricity, Electricity against Wind, and Wind against Fire. Nuclear and Psi are often strong against each other, while Bless and Curse are typically effective against specific enemy types or have unique interactions. Physical attacks also have their own set of resistances and weaknesses.
Here's a breakdown of the core elements and their general interactions:
- Fire: Effective against Ice-weak enemies.
- Ice: Effective against Fire-weak enemies.
- Electric: Effective against Ice-weak enemies.
- Wind: Effective against Electric-weak enemies.
- Nuclear: Often effective against Psi-weak enemies or specific mechanical foes.
- Psi: Often effective against Nuclear-weak enemies or specific psychic foes.
- Bless: Effective against Undead and some demonic enemies.
- Curse: Effective against some demonic and human enemies.
- Physical: Effective against enemies with no resistance or weakness to physical attacks.
When you hit an enemy's weakness, they will enter a 'Downed' state. This allows you to perform a Baton Pass to another party member, granting them a free turn and a damage boost. Successfully Downed enemies can also be subjected to a 'Hold Up,' where you can demand items, money, or even a Persona. If you manage to Down all enemies in a single turn, you can initiate an All-Out Attack, dealing massive damage to the entire enemy party.
Conversely, hitting an enemy's resistance or nullification will result in sificantly reduced damage, and hitting a drain will heal the enemy. Using an attack that an enemy absorbs can be detrimental. Always pay attention to the enemy's elemental affinities, which are displayed during combat. Using the 'Third Eye' ability can also help reveal hidden weaknesses or resistances.
