Persona Acquisition: Negotiation
Negotiating with shadows is a core mechanic in Persona 5 Royal, allowing you to recruit new Personas directly into your party. Success hinges on understanding enemy personalities and choosing the right dialogue options. Mastering negotiation is essential for filling your Persona Compendium and acquiring powerful allies without relying solely on fusion.
Learn the art of Persona negotiation in Persona 5 Royal! This guide details how to successfully talk to shadows, choose the right dialogue options, and recruit new Personas to your cause. Master this skill to expand your roster and complete your Compendium.
The Negotiation System
During combat, after knocking down all enemies, you can initiate a "Hold-Up." One of the options during a Hold-Up is to "Talk." This initiates a negotiation with one of the remaining shadows. The success of the negotiation depends on Joker's dialogue choices, his current level, and sometimes the presence of specific Personas in his party.
Understanding Shadow Personalities
Each shadow has a distinct personality type, which dictates their responses to your dialogue. There are generally five personality types:
- Timid: These shadows are easily frightened and often respond positively to polite or reassuring dialogue. They might ask for money or items.
- Cocky: These shadows are arrogant and boastful. They respond well to challenging or dismissive dialogue, often wanting to test your strength.
- Gloomy: These shadows are melancholic and pessimistic. They might respond to sympathetic or understanding dialogue, sometimes asking for a specific item or favor.
- Enthusiastic: These shadows are energetic and eager. They often respond well to encouragement or a shared interest.
- Dopey: These shadows are simple-minded and easily confused. They might respond to straightforward or slightly patronizing dialogue.
Dialogue Choices and Success
When you choose to "Talk," the shadow will ask you a question or make a statement. You will be presented with three dialogue options. The correct choice depends on the shadow's personality and what it's currently feeling. Here's a general approach:
- Listen Carefully: Pay attention to what the shadow says. Their words often provide clues to their personality and desires.
- Match the Tone: If the shadow is timid, be polite. If it's cocky, be assertive.
- Experiment: If you're unsure, try different options. A failed negotiation will usually result in the shadow leaving or attacking, but it's a learning process.
When to Negotiate
- New Personas: Always attempt to negotiate with any Persona you haven't acquired yet. This is the primary way to add them to your Compendium without fusion.
- Specific Skills: Some Personas might have skills you want to inherit. Negotiating for them can be faster than fusing.
- Low on SP: If your SP is low and you need a specific Persona for combat, negotiation can be a way to acquire one without expending resources.
Tips for Successful Negotiation
- Joker's Level: Your level relative to the shadow's level can influence negotiation outcomes. Higher levels generally make negotiations easier.
- Persona Affiliation: Having a Persona of the same Arcana as the shadow you are negotiating with can sometimes provide a dialogue bonus or unlock special options.
- Save Frequently: Especially when exploring Palaces or Mementos for the first time, save your game before initiating negotiations, in case you fail and need to retry.
Example Negotiation (Pixie - Timid)
If you encounter a Pixie (Timid personality):
- Pixie: "Oh, um... are you going to hurt me?"
- Option 1: "Don't worry." (Correct - Timid response)
- Option 2: "Of course!" (Incorrect - Aggressive)
- Option 3: "I don't know." (Incorrect - Indecisive)
If you choose "Don't worry," Pixie might ask for money or offer to join you.
