Proficiency Stat Blockades

In Persona 5 Royal, the Proficiency social stat plays a surprisingly crucial role in your progression, particularly when it comes to crafting and certain combat mechanics. While not as directly combat-oriented as Guts or Charm, a high Proficiency level can unlock new opportunities and make certain tasks sificantly easier, effectively acting as a blockade if it's too low.

Proficiency is primarily increased by engaging in activities that involve manual dexterity and skill. The most common way to raise Proficiency is by crafting items, such as lockpicks and incense, at the workbench in Joker's room at Leblanc. The more items you craft, and the more complex they are, the higher your Proficiency will grow. Other activities that can contribute to Proficiency include playing certain mini-games or working specific part-time jobs.

A high Proficiency stat is essential for several reasons:

  • Crafting Lockpicks: To open treasure chests found in Palaces and Mementos, you need lockpicks. Initially, you can only craft basic lockpicks, but as your Proficiency increases, you'll be able to craft more durable and effective lockpicks, allowing you to open more valuable chests.
  • Crafting Incense: Proficiency is also required for crafting various types of incense, which can be used to temporarily boost a Persona's stats during battle or fusion.
  • Certain Confidant Ranks: Some Confidants may require a certain level of Proficiency to advance their storyline or unlock specific benefits. For example, the Strength Confidant often involves crafting specific Personas, which can be made easier with higher Proficiency.
  • Baton Pass: While not directly tied to Proficiency, the ability to perform a Baton Pass effectively in combat can be seen as a parallel to skillful execution, much like crafting.

If your Proficiency stat is too low, you might find yourself unable to craft essential items like lockpicks, leaving valuable treasures inaccessible. This can create a sificant blockade in your progression, forcing you to spend precious time grinding for Proficiency instead of advancing the story or other Confidants.

To ensure you don't hit these blockades, make crafting a regular activity, especially in the early to mid-game. Working at the Leblanc coffee shop also contributes to Proficiency and offers SP recovery, making it a doubly beneficial job.
