The Phantom Thieves of Persona 5 Royal are a diverse group, each with a compelling backstory and distinct motivations that drive their actions. From past traumas to societal injustices, their backstories shape their resolve and their commitment to fighting for a better world.

Joker, the protagonist, is framed for a crime he didn't commit, leading to his expulsion and transfer to Shujin Academy. This injustice fuels his desire to expose corruption and protect others from similar fates. Ryuji Sakamoto, initially a delinquent, is driven by a desire to prove himself and stand up against those who abuse their power, stemming from a past incident involving his leg injury and a corrupt teacher.

Ann Takamaki grapples with the aftermath of a friend's suffering and her own feelings of helplessness, motivating her to use her Phantom Thief persona to bring justice to those who prey on the vulnerable. Morgana, a mysterious cat-like creature, seeks to regain his lost memories and understand his true nature, fighting alongside the Phantom Thieves to achieve this goal. Yusuke Kitagawa, an art student, is driven by his pursuit of artistic truth and his desire to expose the manipulative influence of his former mentor, Madarame.

Makoto Niijima, initially a model student, becomes involved with the Phantom Thieves after witnessing the corruption within the school system, driven by a strong sense of justice and a desire to protect her peers. Futaba Sakura, a brilliant hacker, is initially a shut-in due to past trauma, but her journey with the Phantom Thieves helps her overcome her social anxiety and find a new purpose. Haru Okumura, an heiress, seeks to escape her controlling father and the arranged marriage he has planned, using the Phantom Thieves to gain agency over her own life.
