Difficulty Settings

Persona 5 Strikers offers a flexible approach to its challenge, allowing players to tailor their experience. Understanding the nuances of each difficulty setting is crucial for both newcomers to the Musou-style combat and seasoned Phantom Thieves veterans. You can change the difficulty at almost any point during your playthrough, with some exceptions noted below.

Changing Difficulty

To adjust your game's difficulty, follow these steps:

  1. From the main menu or while in the Hideout, navigate to the System option.
  2. Select Config.
  3. Scroll down to find the Difficulty setting.
  4. Choose your desired difficulty from the available options.

Important Note: You cannot change the difficulty while actively engaged in a Jail, during a boss battle, or during certain story-critical sequences. Ensure you make adjustments before entering a Jail or during free-roam segments in the real world.

Available Difficulty Modes

Easy

  • Description: This mode is designed for players who want to focus primarily on the story and experience the narrative without significant combat challenges. Enemies deal reduced damage, and the Phantom Thieves receive a boost to their offensive capabilities.
  • Ideal For:
    • First-time players of action RPGs or Musou games.
    • Players who want to enjoy the Persona 5 story continuation without stress.
    • Experimenting with different character builds or Personas without fear of immediate failure.
  • Strategy: On Easy, you'll find that most regular Shadows can be dispatched quickly with basic combos and elemental weaknesses. Even bosses will be more forgiving, allowing for mistakes and less reliance on perfect dodges or counter-attacks. Stock up on basic healing items like Medicine and Ointment, but you likely won't need to meticulously manage your SP with items like Coffee or Snacks as frequently.

Normal

  • Description: This is the standard, recommended difficulty for most players. It provides a balanced experience, offering a fair challenge that requires strategic thinking, proper Persona management, and effective use of character abilities, without being overly punishing.
  • Ideal For:
    • Players familiar with action RPGs or Musou games.
    • Those seeking a balanced blend of story and combat challenge.
    • Players who enjoy optimizing their team and Persona loadouts.
  • Strategy: On Normal, you'll need to pay attention to enemy weaknesses and exploit them with your Personas and teammates' skills. Baton Passes become more critical for extending combos and maximizing damage. Ensure you're regularly fusing new Personas in the Velvet Room and upgrading your Bond Skills, especially those related to stat boosts (e.g., HP Up, SP Up) and combat efficiency (e.g., Showtime Chance Up). Keep a healthy supply of SP recovery items like Soul Food and Takemedic-All S for longer Jail runs.

Hard

  • Description: Hard mode significantly ramps up the challenge. Enemies hit harder, have more HP, and are generally more aggressive. This difficulty demands a deep understanding of combat mechanics, precise execution, and optimal team composition.
  • Ideal For:
    • Experienced players seeking a true test of skill.
    • Those who have completed the game on Normal and want a fresh challenge.
    • Players who enjoy meticulous preparation and strategic combat.
  • Strategy: Hard mode requires a more proactive approach. Prioritize dodging and guarding, as even regular Shadow attacks can be devastating. Exploiting weaknesses for Technical damage and All-Out Attacks is paramount. Invest heavily in Bond Skills like Joker's Wild for better Persona fusion, Oracle Recovery for more frequent healing from Futaba, and Master Chef to craft powerful recovery items. Always enter Jails with a full stock of the best healing and SP recovery items you can acquire, such as Amrita Soda and Soma. Consider grinding for better gear from Sophia's shop or rare drops from powerful enemies.

Merciless (New Game+ Only)

  • Description: This is the ultimate challenge mode, unlocked only after completing the game once. Merciless pushes every aspect of the game to its limit. Enemies are extremely resilient and deal massive damage, often capable of one-shotting unprepared Phantom Thieves.
  • Ideal For:
    • Completionists and hardcore fans looking for the absolute toughest experience.
    • Players who have mastered the combat system and Persona fusion.
    • Those who enjoy theory-crafting and optimizing every aspect of their party.
  • Strategy: Merciless is not for the faint of heart. Every encounter is a life-or-death situation. You'll need maxed-out Bond Skills, optimally fused Personas with inherited skills, and the best equipment available. Grinding for levels and stat boosts in previous Jails is highly recommended. Focus on Personas with strong resistances and immunities, and ensure your team has a diverse range of elemental coverage. Crafting the most potent consumables like Kurosu Curry and Ultimate Coffee is essential for survival. Expect to utilize every combat mechanic, including perfect dodges, counter-attacks, and environmental hazards, to their fullest potential.
