Persona 5 offers a range of difficulty settings to cater to every type of player, from those who want to enjoy the story without much challenge to those seeking a truly punishing experience. Understanding the nuances of each setting is crucial for planning your playthrough and maximizing your enjoyment. You can change the difficulty at almost any time from the System menu, except during battle or certain story sequences.

Difficulty Levels Explained

Here’s a breakdown of each difficulty setting and what you can expect:

  • Safety: This is the easiest setting, designed for players who want to focus purely on the narrative.
    • Damage Output: Your party deals significantly increased damage to enemies.
    • Damage Taken: Enemies deal very little damage to your party.
    • Experience & Yen: You gain more experience points and Yen from battles.
    • Retries: Unlimited retries for battles and Palace infiltration failures.
    • Key Strategy: No real strategy is needed here; simply enjoy the story. Use basic attacks and Personas with elemental affinities to quickly dispatch foes.
  • Easy: A step up from Safety, but still very forgiving. Good for new players to the Persona series or JRPGs in general.
    • Damage Output: Your party deals increased damage.
    • Damage Taken: Enemies deal reduced damage.
    • Experience & Yen: You gain more experience points and Yen.
    • Retries: Unlimited retries for battles and Palace infiltration failures.
    • Key Strategy: Focus on exploiting enemy weaknesses using your Personas and Baton Passes. Keep your party's HP and SP topped up with basic healing items like Medicine and Soul Drops, which can be purchased from the Clinic in Yongen-Jaya.
  • Normal: The standard Persona 5 experience, offering a balanced challenge. This is recommended for most players.
    • Damage Output: Standard damage output.
    • Damage Taken: Standard damage taken.
    • Experience & Yen: Standard experience and Yen gain.
    • Retries: Unlimited retries for battles and Palace infiltration failures.
    • Key Strategy: This difficulty requires a solid understanding of the combat system. Prioritize fusing strong Personas, managing your SP effectively, and always aiming for "Hold Up" opportunities. visit the Velvet Room frequently to strengthen your Personas. Crafting useful tools at your desk or purchasing items from the Airsoft Shop in Shibuya will also be beneficial.
  • Hard: For players seeking a significant challenge. Enemies hit harder and are more resilient.
    • Damage Output: Your party deals reduced damage.
    • Damage Taken: Enemies deal increased damage.
    • Experience & Yen: Experience and Yen gain are reduced.
    • Retries: Unlimited retries for battles and Palace infiltration failures.
    • Key Strategy: Every battle matters. You'll need to meticulously plan your Persona fusions, optimize your party's equipment (purchased from the Airsoft Shop or found in Palaces), and exploit every weakness. SP management becomes critical, so consider investing in SP-restoring items like Coffee (made at Leblanc) or SP Adhesive 3 (purchased from the Clinic after ranking up the Death Confidant). Grinding in Mementos for extra levels and money will be more important.
  • Merciless: The ultimate challenge, not for the faint of heart. This setting drastically alters combat mechanics.
    • Damage Output: Your party deals significantly reduced damage.
    • Damage Taken: Enemies deal significantly increased damage.
    • Experience & Yen: Experience and Yen gain are significantly reduced.
    • Critical/Weakness Damage: This is the key differentiator. While your normal attacks are weaker, landing critical hits or exploiting weaknesses deals much higher damage than on other difficulties. Conversely, enemies also deal significantly more damage when they hit your weaknesses or land critical hits.
    • Retries: Unlimited retries for battles and Palace infiltration failures.
    • Key Strategy: Merciless demands absolute mastery of the combat system. Your entire strategy must revolve around consistently hitting enemy weaknesses and avoiding having your own weaknesses exploited.
      • Persona Management: Fuse Personas with diverse elemental coverage and strong resistances. Prioritize Personas with skills like Charge and Concentrate for boss battles.
      • Baton Pass: Maximize Baton Pass chains to amplify damage.
      • Ambush: Always ambush enemies to gain the first turn advantage.
      • Equipment: Invest in the best possible weapons, armor, and accessories. Consider accessories that nullify or drain certain elemental attacks if you're struggling with a particular enemy type.
      • Confidants: Prioritize Confidants that offer combat advantages, such as the Chariot Confidant (Ryuji) for Insta-kill in Mementos, or the Death Confidant (Takemi) for discounted healing items and SP Adhesive 3.
      • Item Usage: Be prepared to use a lot of healing and SP recovery items. Stock up on Takemedic-All Z and Soma for tough encounters.

Changing Difficulty

You can adjust the difficulty at any point during your playthrough by navigating to the "System" menu from the main menu or during your daily life segments. This flexibility allows you to fine-tune the challenge to your liking without restarting your game. If a particular boss is giving you trouble on Hard, you can temporarily switch to Normal, defeat the boss, and then switch back. However, Merciless is designed to be a consistent challenge, and frequent switching might undermine the intended experience.
