Skill Cards

Skill Cards are an invaluable resource in Persona Q, allowing you to customize your party's abilities far beyond what their initial Personas or Sub-Personas offer. By strategically applying Skill Cards, you can patch up weaknesses, enhance strengths, and create incredibly versatile character builds. Mastering their acquisition and use is key to conquering the deeper labyrinths and formidable FOEs.

Acquiring Skill Cards

There are several primary methods for obtaining Skill Cards:

  • Fusion Accidents: This is a somewhat unreliable but common early-game method. When fusing Personas in the Velvet Room, there's a chance of a "fusion accident" occurring. Instead of the intended Persona, you might receive a Skill Card. While random, it's a good way to get some early cards without specific effort.
  • Persona Leveling: Many Personas will learn new skills as they level up. Once a Persona has learned all of its inherent skills, any subsequent level-ups will grant you a Skill Card of one of its learned abilities. This is a consistent and farmable method, especially with high-level Personas.
  • Treasure Chests: Keep an eye out for treasure chests scattered throughout the various labyrinths. While many contain equipment or consumables, some will yield valuable Skill Cards. Always thoroughly explore every floor!
  • Requests: Completing certain Requests for Elizabeth in the Nurse's Office can reward you with specific Skill Cards. These are often tied to defeating particular FOEs or collecting rare materials, so check her list regularly.
  • Rare Shadows: Occasionally, you'll encounter rare, glowing Shadows in the labyrinths. Defeating these often grants superior rewards, including higher-tier Skill Cards.
  • StreetPass: Utilizing the 3DS StreetPass functionality can also net you Skill Cards from other players' Personas.

Using Skill Cards

Once you have a Skill Card, you can use it in the Velvet Room to teach that skill to any Persona or Sub-Persona. Here's how it works:

  1. Navigate to the Velvet Room from the Nurse's Office.
  2. Select the "Skill Card" option.
  3. Choose the Skill Card you wish to use from your inventory.
  4. Select the Persona (Main or Sub) you want to teach the skill to.
  5. Confirm your choice. The Persona will now have the new skill.

Important Considerations:

  • Limited Slots: Each Persona and Sub-Persona has a limited number of skill slots. If a Persona's slots are full, you'll need to overwrite an existing skill to teach a new one. Plan carefully!
  • Cost: Using a Skill Card consumes the card permanently. There is no monetary cost associated with teaching a skill via a Skill Card.
  • Strategic Application: Don't just slap skills onto Personas randomly. Consider your party's overall composition, elemental coverage, and individual character roles. For example, giving a healing skill to a character with high LUC can make them a more effective support, or adding a powerful elemental attack to a Persona that naturally resists that element can create a balanced offensive option.

Recommended Skill Cards to Prioritize

While every Skill Card has its use, some are universally more valuable, especially in the early to mid-game:

  • Healing Skills: Dia, Media, Mediarama, Samarecarm. Having reliable healing on multiple characters (especially your back row) is crucial for survivability.
  • Buff/Debuff Skills: Tarukaja, Rakukaja, Sukukaja, Tarunda, Rakunda, Sukunda. These skills significantly impact battle flow by altering enemy and ally stats. Prioritize them for your support characters.
  • Elemental Boosts: Fire Boost, Ice Boost, Elec Boost, Wind Boost. These passive skills increase the damage of their respective elemental attacks. Give them to your primary elemental attackers.
  • Passive Utility Skills:
    • Regenerate/Invigorate: Restores HP/SP each turn. Excellent for sustained dungeon crawling.
    • HP/SP Up: Increases maximum HP/SP. Always useful for any character.
    • Alertness: Increases chance of pre-emptive strikes. Great for avoiding ambushes.
  • Multi-Target Elemental Attacks: Maragi, Mabufu, Mazio, Magaru. Essential for clearing groups of weaker enemies quickly and efficiently.

Experiment with different combinations and don't be afraid to overwrite skills if you find a better synergy. Skill Cards are a powerful tool for adapting to Persona Q's challenging labyrinths!
