Technical Machines (TMs) and Hidden Machines (HMs) are crucial for teaching your Pokémon new moves. TMs are single-use in previous generations but are infinitely reusable in Black 2 and White 2, making them incredibly valuable. HMs are also infinitely reusable and are necessary for navigating the overworld.

Technical Machines (TMs):
TMs teach a wide variety of moves, from powerful offensive attacks to strategic status moves. They can be found in various locations, received as rewards for Gym Battles, or purchased from shops. Some notable TMs include:
- TM01 (Hone Claws): Boosts Attack and Accuracy.
- TM09 (Venoshock): Poison-type special attack, doubles power if target is poisoned.
- TM10 (Hidden Power): A special attack whose type and power vary based on the user's IVs.
- TM27 (Return): Normal-type physical attack, power increases with user's friendship.
- TM52 (Focus Blast): Powerful Fighting-type special attack, but with low accuracy.
- TM90 (Substitute): Creates a substitute using 25% of max HP, protecting the user from damage and status.
Always consider which Pokémon can best use a TM before teaching it, as some moves are more effective on certain Pokémon due to their stats or typing.
Hidden Machines (HMs):
HMs teach moves that are essential for traversing the Unova region. They can be used both in and out of battle. You'll need to teach these to specific Pokémon to progress through the story. HMs cannot be forgotten without the help of the Move Deleter in Lentimas Town.
- HM01 (Cut): Cuts down small trees. Obtained after defeating Cheren.
- HM02 (Fly): Allows you to instantly travel to previously visited towns. Obtained in Driftveil City.
- HM03 (Surf): Allows you to travel across water. Obtained in Humilau City.
- HM04 (Strength): Allows you to push large boulders. Obtained in Nimbasa City.
- HM05 (Waterfall): Allows you to climb waterfalls. Obtained in Victory Road.
- HM06 (Dive): Allows you to dive underwater in specific spots. Obtained in Undella Town.
It's often wise to have a dedicated 'HM Slave' Pokémon in your party that can learn multiple HMs, freeing up moveslots on your main battle team.
