Virbank City Gym: Roxie
Welcome to Virbank City, home to the second Gym Leader, Roxie! This isn't your typical Gym; it's a vibrant, punk-rock music club where Roxie, the Poison-type specialist, also fronts a band. Prepare for a unique challenge that tests your ability to navigate a crowded venue and withstand potent Poison-type attacks and debilitating status conditions.
Gym Puzzle: The Mosh Pit Mayhem
The Virbank Gym doesn't have a traditional puzzle with switches or mazes. Instead, your challenge is to make your way through the mosh pit of enthusiastic fans and trainers to reach Roxie on the stage. There are three trainers blocking your path, and you'll need to defeat them to clear the way. The Gym is designed to feel like a live concert, with loud music and flashing lights, adding to the atmosphere.
Step-by-step Navigation:
- Upon entering, head directly north. You'll see a path to your left and right.
- Take the path to the left first. You'll encounter your first trainer.
- After defeating the first trainer, proceed north along the left side. You'll find the second trainer.
- Once the second trainer is defeated, head back towards the entrance area and take the path to the right.
- Engage the third and final trainer blocking your way to the stage.
- With all three trainers defeated, the path to Roxie on the stage will be clear. Approach her to initiate the Gym Battle!
Gym Trainers & Pokémon
These trainers will give you a taste of what Roxie has in store. They all utilize Poison-type Pokémon, so use these battles to test your strategies and get a feel for their movesets.
Trainer 1: Guitarist Nelson
- Pokémon:
- Grimer (Level 16, Poison)
- Moves: Disable, Poison Gas, Sludge, Harden
- Grimer (Level 16, Poison)
- Strategy: Grimer is a pure Poison-type. Ground-type moves are super effective. Watch out for Poison Gas, which can inflict the Poison status.
Trainer 2: Bassist Tuba
- Pokémon:
- Koffing (Level 16, Poison)
- Moves: Smog, Tackle, Assurance, Poison Gas
- Koffing (Level 16, Poison)
- Strategy: Koffing is another pure Poison-type. Ground-type attacks are your best bet. Smog also has a chance to poison, so be prepared.
Trainer 3: Drummer Andy
- Pokémon:
- Venipede (Level 16, Bug/Poison)
- Moves: Poison Sting, Defense Curl, Rollout, Pursuit
- Venipede (Level 16, Bug/Poison)
- Strategy: Venipede's Bug/Poison typing makes it vulnerable to Fire, Flying, Psychic, and Rock-type moves. Ground-type moves are only normally effective here. Poison Sting can inflict poison.
Gym Leader Battle: Roxie
Roxie is a formidable opponent who relies on inflicting the Poison status and wearing down your team. Her Pokémon are fast and hit hard for this stage of the game. Be prepared!
Roxie's Pokémon
| Pokémon | Type | Level | Moves | Ability | Held Item |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Koffing | Poison | 16 | Smog, Tackle, Assurance, Poison Gas | Levitate | None |
| Whirlipede | Bug/Poison | 18 | Poison Sting, Defense Curl, Rollout, Pursuit | Poison Point | Oran Berry |
Roxie Battle Strategy
Roxie's team focuses on inflicting the Poison status and dealing consistent damage. Whirlipede, in particular, can be tricky with its Bug/Poison typing and the Oran Berry.
Key Weaknesses & Counters:
- Koffing (Poison):
- Super Effective: Ground, Psychic
- Resists: Fighting, Poison, Bug, Grass, Fairy
- Immune: None
- Strategy: Koffing's Levitate ability makes it immune to Ground-type moves if you're using them. This is a crucial detail! Focus on Psychic-type moves if you have them. Otherwise, strong neutral attacks are your best bet. Avoid using Grass or Fighting types.
- Whirlipede (Bug/Poison):
- Super Effective: Fire, Flying, Psychic, Rock
- Resists: Fighting, Poison, Bug, Grass, Fairy
- Immune: None
- Strategy: Whirlipede is Roxie's ace. Its Bug/Poison typing gives it more weaknesses than Koffing. Fire, Flying, Psychic, and Rock-type moves will deal super effective damage. Be aware of its Oran Berry, which will restore some HP when it drops low. Try to hit it with a strong super effective move to take it out before it can heal or inflict too much poison.
Recommended Pokémon & Moves:
- Ground-types:
- Riolu (evolves into Lucario): While not a Ground-type, it learns Force Palm (Fighting) which is neutral against Koffing and super effective against Whirlipede. If you have a Riolu from Floccesy Ranch, it's a great choice.
- Drilbur (Cave in Relic Passage): A fantastic choice! As a pure Ground-type, its Dig or Magnitude will devastate Whirlipede. However, remember Koffing's Levitate ability makes it immune to Ground moves. You'll need another Pokémon for Koffing.
- Sandile (Desert Resort): Another excellent Ground/Dark-type. Its Ground-type moves will be strong against Whirlipede, and its Dark typing offers some resistances. Again, beware of Koffing's Levitate.
- Psychic-types:
- Munna (Dreamyard): If you caught a Munna, its Psychic-type moves will be super effective against both Koffing and Whirlipede, making it an MVP for this Gym.
- Espurr (if traded from X/Y or bred): While not available naturally this early, if you have one, it's a strong Psychic option.
- Fire-types:
- Pansear (if you chose Oshawott as your starter and received Pansear from the Dreamyard): Fire-type moves are super effective against Whirlipede.
- Growlithe (Route 20): A good Fire-type option if you can catch one.
- Flying-types:
- Pidove (Route 20, Floccesy Ranch): Its Flying-type moves are super effective against Whirlipede.
- Woobat (Relic Passage): A Flying/Psychic type, making it excellent against both of Roxie's Pokémon.
General Tips for the Battle:
- Status Conditions: Roxie's Pokémon love to inflict Poison. Bring plenty of Antidotes (available at any Poké Mart) to cure your Pokémon. A poisoned Pokémon loses HP every turn, which can quickly turn the tide of battle.
- Heal Items: Stock up on Potions and Super Potions. Roxie's attacks can be quite strong.
- Level Up: Ensure your Pokémon are at least Level 18-20. This will give you a significant advantage in terms of stats and move access.
- Switching: Don't be afraid to switch out a poisoned Pokémon or one that is at a type disadvantage.
- Critical Hits: While not a strategy, a lucky critical hit can turn the tide in your favor.
After the Battle
Upon defeating Roxie, she will award you with the Toxic Badge, signifying your mastery over the Virbank City Gym. This badge allows Pokémon up to Level 30 to obey you, including traded Pokémon. You will also receive TM09 (Venoshock), a powerful Poison-type move that deals double damage if the target is already poisoned. Finally, Roxie will give you a bottle of Poison Barb, an item that boosts the power of Poison-type moves when held.
Congratulations, trainer! You've conquered the Virbank Gym and are one step closer to becoming the Pokémon Champion!
While Roxie relies on stationary Poison-type hazards in Virbank City, players of Pokemon Unite can experience Dwebble's similar area-denial mechanics through its strategic Rock Tomb ability.
While Roxie’s venue emphasizes a gritty urban aesthetic, the Contest Spectaculars in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire offer a more polished approach to performance-based gameplay mechanics.
