Pokémon Locations and Catch Rates
Welcome, aspiring Pokémon Trainers, to the definitive guide for finding and capturing every Pokémon in the Unova region! This section will provide you with detailed information on where to find specific Pokémon, their encounter rates, and effective strategies to add them to your team. Remember, patience and preparation are key!
General Catching Tips
- Status Conditions: Inflicting a status condition like Sleep or Paralysis significantly increases your chances of capture. Sleep is generally the most effective, followed by Paralysis. Avoid Poison, Burn, or Confusion, as they can cause the wild Pokémon to faint.
- HP Reduction: The lower a wild Pokémon's HP, the easier it is to catch. Aim to get their HP into the red zone (less than 20% of their total HP) without knocking them out. Moves like False Swipe (which always leaves 1 HP) are invaluable for this.
- Ball Choice: Don't just rely on Poké Balls! Great Balls and Ultra Balls offer higher catch rates. Consider specialty balls like Net Balls for Bug or Water types, Dusk Balls at night or in caves, and Quick Balls at the very start of a battle.
- Repels: Use Repels (Super Repel or Max Repel) to avoid unwanted encounters when hunting for a specific rare Pokémon in an area with many common ones.
- Synchronize Ability: If you have a Pokémon with the Synchronize ability (e.g., Munna, Ralts, Kirlia, Gardevoir) at the front of your party, wild Pokémon have a 50% chance of having the same nature as your Synchronize Pokémon. This is incredibly useful for competitive breeding!
Route 1: Early Game Encounters
Route 1 is your very first encounter zone, home to some foundational Unova Pokémon. While the variety is small, these Pokémon will be crucial for your early journey.
Patrat
- Location: Tall Grass (Route 1, Route 2, Accumula Town)
- Catch Rate: High (255)
- Strategy: Patrat is incredibly common and easy to catch. Any Poké Ball will do the trick, even at full HP. If you want to be extra safe, a single Tackle or Scratch from your starter will bring its HP down enough.
- Recommended Ball: Poké Ball
Lillipup
- Location: Tall Grass (Route 1, Route 2, Accumula Town)
- Catch Rate: High (255)
- Strategy: Similar to Patrat, Lillipup is a very common early-game encounter. Reduce its HP slightly with a weak attack and toss a Poké Ball.
- Recommended Ball: Poké Ball
Dreamyard: A Glimpse of the Psychic
The Dreamyard, accessible early in the game, offers a unique Psychic-type Pokémon that can be a valuable asset.
Munna
- Location: Tall Grass (Dreamyard)
- Catch Rate: Medium (190)
- Strategy: Munna can be a bit trickier than the Route 1 Pokémon due to its higher HP and the ability to use Defense Curl. Weaken it with a few non-super effective attacks. If you have a Pokémon that can inflict Sleep (like a starter's Hypnosis if you chose Snivy), that will greatly increase your chances. Otherwise, get its HP into the yellow or red and use a Great Ball.
- Recommended Ball: Great Ball (or Poké Ball if HP is very low and asleep/paralyzed)
- Item Note: You can find a Repel near the entrance to the Dreamyard, which can be useful if you're only targeting Munna.
Pinwheel Forest: Diverse Bug and Grass Types
Pinwheel Forest is a sprawling area with a wide array of Bug and Grass-type Pokémon. Be prepared for longer encounters and consider bringing several Poké Balls.
Sewaddle
- Location: Tall Grass (Pinwheel Forest - Outer area)
- Catch Rate: Medium (255)
- Strategy: Sewaddle is quite common here. Its Bug/Grass typing makes it vulnerable to Fire, Flying, Ice, and Poison attacks. Be careful not to knock it out with a super-effective move. Reduce its HP to yellow/red and use a Great Ball.
- Recommended Ball: Great Ball, Net Ball
Venipede
- Location: Tall Grass (Pinwheel Forest - Outer area)
- Catch Rate: Medium (255)
- Strategy: Venipede, a Bug/Poison type, is also frequently found. Ground and Psychic attacks are super effective. Again, aim to weaken it without fainting. A Net Ball will be particularly effective due to its Bug typing.
- Recommended Ball: Great Ball, Net Ball
Cottonee (Black Version Exclusive) / Petilil (White Version Exclusive)
- Location: Tall Grass (Pinwheel Forest - Outer area)
- Catch Rate: Medium (190)
- Strategy: These version-exclusive Grass-types are a bit rarer. They have decent Special Attack, so be mindful of their attacks. Fire, Flying, Bug, Poison, and Ice moves are super effective. Bring their HP down to red and consider using a Great Ball or even an Ultra Ball if you're having trouble. Status conditions like Sleep or Paralysis are highly recommended for these.
- Recommended Ball: Great Ball, Ultra Ball
Wellspring Cave: Dark and Ground Types
Wellspring Cave introduces you to darker, more rugged Pokémon. Remember to bring a Pokémon with Flash if you want to see clearly, though it's not strictly necessary for encounters.
Woobat
- Location: Cave (Wellspring Cave)
- Catch Rate: Medium (190)
- Strategy: Woobat is a Flying/Psychic type. Electric, Ice, Rock, Ghost, and Dark moves are effective. It can use Confusion, so be prepared for some self-damage. Get its HP low and use a Great Ball. Dusk Balls are excellent here due to the cave environment.
- Recommended Ball: Great Ball, Dusk Ball
Drilbur
- Location: Dust Clouds (Wellspring Cave)
- Catch Rate: Low (120)
- Strategy: Drilbur is a rare encounter, only appearing in "Dust Clouds" that randomly appear in caves. When you see a dust cloud, run into it to trigger an encounter. Drilbur is a pure Ground-type, so Water, Grass, and Ice moves are super effective. It has high Attack, so be careful. Due to its rarity and lower catch rate, definitely use a Great Ball or an Ultra Ball. Inflicting Sleep or Paralysis is highly recommended.
- Recommended Ball: Ultra Ball, Dusk Ball
