Clay's Gym features a unique elevator puzzle. His Ground-type Pokémon, including Excadrill, can be tough. A strong Water-type like your starter's evolution or a Grass-type like Lilligant/Whimsicott will make this battle much easier. Watch out for his Excadrill's high Attack. Defeat Clay to earn the Quake Badge and TM78, Bulldoze.
