Trainer Card and Medals
Beyond the eight Gym Badges and the coveted Champion title, your journey through Unova in Pokémon Black and White offers additional ways to track your accomplishments and showcase your prowess as a Trainer: the Trainer Card and Medals. These features provide a comprehensive overview of your progress and offer unique challenges for the completionist.
Your Trainer Card
The Trainer Card is your personal identification in the world of Unova. Accessible from the main menu, it displays vital information about your adventure. As you achieve significant milestones, your Trainer Card will upgrade, changing its color and adding stars. There are five distinct colors, each signifying a new tier of achievement:
- Green Card: This is your starting card.
- Blue Card: Earned after defeating the Elite Four and becoming the Champion.
- Bronze Card: Achieved by completing the National Pokédex (catching all 649 Pokémon). This is a monumental task requiring trades, transfers from previous generations, and diligent searching throughout Unova.
- Silver Card: Awarded for earning all 255 Medals (see below). This will test every facet of your gameplay.
- Gold Card: The ultimate bragging right, obtained by achieving a perfect Battle Subway record (winning 49 consecutive battles in a Multi Train, Super Single Train, Super Double Train, or Super Multi Train). This requires exceptional team building and strategic battling.
To view your Trainer Card, simply open your Xtransceiver (or press X to open the main menu) and select "Trainer Card." You can also show it to other players via local wireless or Wi-Fi connection to compare progress.
Unova's Medals: The Ultimate Challenge
Introduced in Black and White, Medals are a new system of in-game achievements that reward players for a vast array of accomplishments, both big and small. There are a staggering 255 Medals to collect, categorized into various types. Earning them all is a true test of dedication and exploration.
How to Obtain Medals
Medals are awarded by a specific NPC: the Medal Man. He can be found in the Medal Office, located in Castelia City. To reach him:
- Travel to Castelia City.
- From the main street, head west towards the narrow alleyways.
- The Medal Office is the building directly to the left of the Castelia City Gym.
- Enter the building and speak to the Medal Man. He will review your progress and award any Medals you've earned.
The Medal Man will also give you the Medal Box, a key item that allows you to view all the Medals you've collected and see hints for those you haven't yet found. The Medal Box is automatically added to your Bag (Key Items pocket) after your first encounter with the Medal Man.
Types of Medals and Strategies
Medals are broadly categorized, and understanding these categories can help you strategize your collection:
- Adventure Medals: These are earned through story progression, like defeating Gym Leaders, the Elite Four, and completing the main storyline.
- Example: "Badge Collector" for earning all 8 Gym Badges.
- Strategy: Simply play through the game! You'll naturally acquire many of these.
- Battle Medals: Awarded for various battle-related feats, from winning a certain number of battles to achieving specific battle conditions.
- Example: "Battle Master" for winning 100 battles.
- Strategy: Engage every Trainer you see. Grind in areas with strong wild Pokémon. The Battle Subway is a prime location for earning many battle-related Medals.
- Collection Medals: Focus on catching Pokémon, filling your Pokédex, and acquiring items.
- Example: "Pokédex Completionist" for completing the Unova Pokédex.
- Strategy: Use the Pokédex to track unobtained Pokémon. Utilize the GTS and trade with friends. Don't forget about seasonal Pokémon and those found through special events.
- Communication Medals: Involve interacting with other players through various in-game features.
- Example: "Trade Enthusiast" for performing 10 trades.
- Strategy: Actively participate in trades, both locally and via Wi-Fi. Engage in multiplayer battles and use the C-Gear's communication features.
- Fun Medals: These are often quirky and require specific, sometimes unusual, actions.
- Example: "Bridge Enthusiast" for crossing the Skyarrow Bridge 50 times.
- Strategy: Pay attention to your surroundings and try out different actions. Some Medals might require repeated actions or interacting with specific NPCs. Consult your Medal Box for hints.
- Event Medals: Some Medals are tied to specific in-game events or real-world distributions.
- Example: "Global Link User" for connecting to the Pokémon Global Link.
- Strategy: Stay updated on official Pokémon news for any limited-time events or distributions that might unlock these Medals.
Pro-Tip: Regularly visit the Medal Man in Castelia City. He won't just award you Medals; he'll also provide hints for Medals you haven't yet earned, guiding you towards new challenges. Don't underestimate the value of these hints, especially for the more obscure "Fun Medals."
Collecting all Medals is a long-term goal that will significantly extend your gameplay experience in Pokémon Black and White. Good luck, Trainer!
