Evolution Methods
Unlike traditional Pokémon games, evolution in Pokémon Colosseum is a bit more nuanced, especially considering the unique nature of Shadow Pokémon. This section will guide you through all the methods to evolve your Pokémon, ensuring you can unlock their full potential.
Level-Up Evolution
The most common evolution method, many Pokémon in Colosseum will evolve simply by gaining enough experience and leveling up. This happens automatically once they reach the required level after a battle.
- Strategy: Engage in battles regularly, especially in areas with strong trainers like the Pyrite Town Colosseum or the Under Colosseum. Using items like the Exp. Share (if available, though rare in Colosseum) or focusing on single Pokémon in battles can accelerate this process.
- Important Note for Shadow Pokémon: Shadow Pokémon cannot evolve until they have been fully purified. Once purified, they will evolve normally upon reaching their required level.
Stone Evolution
Certain Pokémon require specific evolutionary stones to evolve. These stones are single-use items, so choose wisely!
- Acquiring Stones:
- Fire Stone: Can be purchased from the Pyrite Town Shop for 2000 P.
- Water Stone: Can be purchased from the Phenac City Shop for 2000 P.
- Thunder Stone: Can be purchased from the Agate Village Shop for 2000 P.
- Leaf Stone: Can be purchased from the Outskirt Stand Shop for 2000 P.
- Moon Stone: Found as a hidden item in various locations, most notably in the Cipher Lab after defeating the trainers there.
- Sun Stone: Similar to the Moon Stone, often found as a hidden item or as a reward for specific side quests. Check the Deep Colosseum for potential hidden items.
- Usage: Navigate to your Bag, select the appropriate evolutionary stone, and then choose the compatible Pokémon to evolve.
Trade Evolution
Some Pokémon evolve only when traded to another game. This is a crucial method for completing your collection.
- Requirements: You will need two Game Boy Advance systems, a GameCube-GBA Link Cable, and a copy of Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald.
- Process:
- Connect your Game Boy Advance to the GameCube using the Link Cable.
- Start Pokémon Colosseum and a compatible GBA Pokémon game.
- Access the "Trade" option from the main menu in Colosseum (after unlocking the ability to trade, which occurs later in the story at the Agate Village Pokémon Center).
- Select the Pokémon you wish to trade. Ensure the Pokémon on the GBA game is also ready to trade.
- Upon successful trade, the Pokémon that evolves via trade will do so immediately on the receiving game.
- Key Pokémon for Trade Evolution: Kadabra (into Alakazam), Machoke (into Machamp), Graveler (into Golem), Haunter (into Gengar).
Friendship Evolution
A select few Pokémon evolve when they have a high level of friendship with their trainer and then level up. Building friendship takes time and effort.
- Increasing Friendship:
- Walk around with the Pokémon in your party.
- Give the Pokémon vitamins (HP Up, Protein, Iron, Calcium, Zinc, Carbos).
- Use healing items on the Pokémon (Potions, Full Restores).
- Avoid letting the Pokémon faint in battle.
- Do not use bitter-tasting items on the Pokémon.
- Checking Friendship: While there isn't a direct in-game friendship checker like in later titles, consistent positive actions will eventually lead to evolution. Keep the Pokémon in your active party and level it up after a significant period of care.
- Example: Golbat evolves into Crobat with high friendship.
Unique Evolution Conditions
A couple of Pokémon have specific, less common evolution requirements.
- Espeon & Umbreon: Eevee can evolve into either Espeon or Umbreon based on the time of day and its friendship level.
- Espeon: High friendship + level up during the daytime.
- Umbreon: High friendship + level up during the nighttime.
- Determining Day/Night: The game's internal clock dictates this. Generally, daytime is from 6 AM to 6 PM, and nighttime is from 6 PM to 6 AM.
Mastering these evolution methods is key to building a powerful and diverse team in Pokémon Colosseum. Plan your evolutions carefully, especially for Shadow Pokémon, to ensure you get the most out of your captured companions!
