Walkthrough: Cipher Lab

Welcome, Snagem Trainer! The Cipher Lab is a pivotal location in your quest to dismantle Cipher's operations. Be prepared for numerous battles and some tricky navigation. Ensure your Pokémon are well-healed and stocked with plenty of Poké Balls, especially Great Balls, as you'll encounter several Shadow Pokémon here. Remember that TMs in Pokémon Colosseum are generally one-time pickups from their specific locations, so use them wisely!

Entering the Lab

  1. Upon arriving at the Cipher Lab, you'll immediately be confronted by Cipher Peon Nore. This is a standard Trainer battle; she does not use a Shadow Pokémon. Defeat her to gain access.
  2. Head straight through the main entrance. You'll find yourself in a large, central lobby area.

First Floor Exploration

The first floor is relatively straightforward, but don't miss any hidden items!

  • West Wing:
    • Take the door to your left (west). You'll enter a hallway with several rooms.
    • The first room on your left contains Scientist Tovin. Battle him.
    • The second room on your left has a Full Heal on the desk.
    • Continue down the hallway. You'll encounter Cipher Peon Yugo.
    • At the end of this hallway, you'll find a room with a Hyper Potion in a cabinet.
  • East Wing:
    • Return to the central lobby and take the door to your right (east).
    • This wing mirrors the west wing. Battle Cipher Peon Kolest in the first room on your right.
    • The second room on your right holds a Max Revive.
    • Proceed down the hallway, defeating Scientist Gump.
    • The final room in this wing has TM05 (Roar) on the floor. This TM is a one-time pickup from this location.
  • Central Area & Stairs:
    • Back in the lobby, locate the stairs leading to the second floor. Before ascending, check behind the reception desk for a hidden Great Ball.

Second Floor: Shadow Pokémon Encounters

The second floor is where the real action begins. Be ready to snag some valuable Shadow Pokémon! Ensure you have plenty of Great Balls or Ultra Balls, as these encounters can be challenging.

  1. Ascend the stairs to the second floor. You'll immediately face Cipher Peon Vana.
  2. North Corridor:
    • Head north. The first door on your left leads to a small office. Inside, you'll find a Revive and battle Cipher Peon Tanie, who uses Shadow Makuhita. Be prepared to snag it! Makuhita is a Fighting-type, so Psychic or Flying-type attacks are effective.
    • Continue along the corridor. The next room on your left contains a Protein.
    • Further down, you'll encounter Cipher Peon Mesin, who has Shadow Togepi. Togepi is a Fairy-type (Normal-type in Gen 3), making Steel or Poison-type attacks effective. Its low HP and defensive stats can make it an easier snag if you chip away carefully.
  3. South Corridor:
    • Return to the top of the stairs and head south.
    • The first room on your right has a Full Restore.
    • The next room contains Scientist Ein, who will challenge you.
    • At the end of this corridor, you'll find a larger lab area. Here, you'll face a particularly tough opponent, Cipher Peon Lare, who has two Shadow Pokémon: Shadow Misdreavus and Shadow Remoraid. This is a critical battle, so plan your Snag attempts carefully! Misdreavus is a Ghost-type, weak to Ghost and Dark. Remoraid is a Water-type, weak to Grass and Electric. Focus on reducing their HP and inflicting status conditions like Sleep or Paralysis for easier snags.
  4. Central Research Area:
    • After clearing the north and south corridors, proceed to the large central research area.
    • You'll find a computer terminal here. Interacting with it will reveal some crucial information about Cipher's operations, hinting at their next major facility.
    • Another Cipher Peon, Cipher Peon Kamus, guards the exit from this area. Defeat them.

Reaching the Basement

With the second floor explored, it's time to descend.

  1. Locate the stairs leading down to the basement level. These are usually found in the central part of the second floor, often near the research area you just cleared.
  2. Before heading down, ensure your team is healed. There's usually a PC and a healing machine nearby, or you can use your items. If not, consider backtracking to a Pokémon Center if your team is low on health or PP.

Basement: The Final Confrontation (for now!)

The basement is where you'll confront the head of this facility.

  • Upon entering the basement, you'll be greeted by a series of hallways and storage rooms.
  • Storage Room 1: The first room you encounter will likely have a Calcium or similar stat-boosting item.
  • Storage Room 2: Another room might contain a PP Up.
  • Navigate through the winding corridors, battling any remaining Cipher Peons. These often have stronger Pokémon than those on the upper floors. You'll face Cipher Peon Cail and Cipher Peon Gefta in this area.
  • Eventually, you'll reach a large chamber. Here, you'll face the Cipher Admin responsible for the lab: Admin Venus. This battle will feature a powerful Shadow Pokémon, Shadow Delcatty. Delcatty is a Normal-type, so Fighting-type attacks are super effective. Be ready with your Snag Ball of choice! Admin Venus's other Pokémon can be challenging, so focus on snagging Delcatty first, then dealing with the rest of her team.
  • After defeating Admin Venus and snagging her Shadow Delcatty, she will reveal more about Cipher's plans and the location of the next major facility.

Exiting the Cipher Lab

Once the Cipher Admin is defeated, you're free to leave.

  1. Retrace your steps back through the lab.
  2. Head back to the main entrance on the first floor.
  3. You can now return to Phenac City or head to your next destination, armed with new information and potentially new Shadow Pokémon!
