Walkthrough: Gateon Port

Welcome to Gateon Port, a bustling harbor town that serves as a crucial hub in your journey through Orre. After successfully navigating the Pyrite Town challenges and the Cipher Lab, you will arrive in Gateon Port by train. This vibrant port is filled with unique characters, hidden items, and important plot developments. Take your time to explore, as there are several key interactions and resources here that will be vital for your continued adventure.

Initial Exploration and Key Resources

Upon stepping off the train, your first order of business is to familiarize yourself with the port. The layout can be a little confusing at first, but careful exploration will yield valuable rewards and prepare you for the challenges ahead.

  • Heal Your Pokémon: Immediately upon entering Gateon Port from the train station, head directly east. The Pokémon Center is prominently located just a short walk from the entrance, identifiable by its familiar red roof. This is essential for recovering from previous battles and preparing for new ones.
  • Shop for Supplies: The Poké Mart is conveniently located right next to the Pokémon Center. Stock up on essential items like Potions, Antidotes, and especially Poké Balls. You'll need plenty for Snagging Shadow Pokémon! Consider purchasing some status-healing items too, as Shadow Pokémon often inflict status conditions.
  • Find the Item Ball (Hyper Potion): From the Pokémon Center, head south and then west along the docks. Follow the wooden boardwalk until you reach the westernmost edge of the port. You'll spot an Item Ball tucked away near some crates and barrels. This contains a valuable Hyper Potion, perfect for emergency healing during tough battles.
  • Talk to the Locals: Engage with the various NPCs scattered around the port. Many offer helpful hints, flavor text, or even trigger minor events. Pay particular attention to anyone mentioning strange Pokémon or suspicious activity, as this often foreshadows upcoming plot points or side quests.

Side Quest: The Old Man's Krabby (Shadow Krabby)

A notable side quest in Gateon Port involves an old man and his lost Krabby. Unlike the initial impression, you can indeed help him, and doing so yields a valuable reward.

  1. Locate the Krabby: Head towards the eastern side of the port, near the large ship docked there. You'll see a Krabby scuttling around near the water's edge, distinct from other wild Pokémon. This is actually a Shadow Krabby.
  2. Speak to the Old Man: An old man nearby, dressed in a fisherman's outfit, is looking for his Krabby. Talk to him, and he'll express his concern and inability to catch it.
  3. Snag the Shadow Krabby: Engage the Shadow Krabby in battle. It will likely be around Level 20-25. Use your Snag Machine to capture it. Remember to whittle down its HP and inflict status conditions (like Sleep or Paralysis) to increase your Snag success rate.
  4. Return Krabby to the Old Man: After successfully snagging the Shadow Krabby, return to the old man. Speak to him again. He will be overjoyed that you've found his Pokémon.
  5. Receive Your Reward: As a token of his gratitude, the old man will reward you with a TM03 (Water Pulse). This is an excellent Special Attack move for many Water-type Pokémon and a worthwhile reward for your efforts.

Main Objective: The Lighthouse and the Power Plant

Your primary objective in Gateon Port involves resolving an energy crisis affecting the region, centered around the Lighthouse and the nearby Power Plant. These locations are central to advancing the main storyline.

  1. Head to the Lighthouse: From the main square near the Pokémon Center, proceed north. The Lighthouse is a prominent, tall structure easily visible. Enter the Lighthouse.
  2. Meet the Lighthouse Keeper: Inside, you'll encounter the Lighthouse Keeper, a crucial character who provides vital information about the region's energy crisis. He will inform you that the Power Plant, which supplies power to Gateon Port and surrounding areas, is experiencing severe issues, causing blackouts. He'll also hint at suspicious activity related to Cipher.
  3. The Power Plant Key: The Lighthouse Keeper will direct you to find a way to restore power. He mentions that the key to the Power Plant is held by a suspicious individual who has been loitering around the port.
  4. Locating the Key Holder: Exit the Lighthouse and head towards the western side of the port, near the large warehouse and the Item Ball you found earlier. You'll spot a shady character, a Cipher Peon, loitering around. Engage him in conversation. He'll initially be evasive and deny any involvement.
  5. Battle for the Key: To obtain the Power Plant Key, you'll need to defeat this Cipher Peon in a Pokémon battle.
    • Cipher Peon's Pokémon: He typically uses Pokémon around Level 20-25. Be prepared for a mix of types. Focus on type advantages and effective Snagging if he uses a Shadow Pokémon (which is common for Cipher Peons).
    • Strategy Tip: Ensure your team is healed and consider bringing Pokémon with good coverage against common Dark, Poison, and Fighting types often favored by Cipher.
Upon defeat, the Cipher Peon will reluctantly hand over the Power Plant Key.

Restoring Power to the Power Plant

With the Power Plant Key in hand, your next step is to head to the Power Plant itself, located just outside of Gateon Port.

  1. Exit Gateon Port: Head back towards the train station entrance. Instead of boarding a train, take the path leading out of town to the north. This will lead you directly to the Power Plant.
  2. Enter the Power Plant: Use the newly acquired key to gain access to the Power Plant. Be warned, the Power Plant is crawling with Cipher operatives, and you should expect multiple trainer battles.
  3. Navigate the Power Plant: The Power Plant is a multi-level dungeon filled with Cipher Peons. Your goal is to reach the central control room.
    • Trainer Battles: Expect to encounter several Cipher Peons. These battles are excellent opportunities to Snag more Shadow Pokémon, which are often powerful additions to your team. Prioritize Snagging any new Shadow Pokémon you haven't encountered yet.
    • Item Ball (Full Heal): Keep an eye out for an Item Ball containing a Full Heal on the ground floor, near some machinery in the eastern section.
    • Pathfinding: The Power Plant's layout involves navigating through various rooms and corridors. There are no complex puzzles, but you may need to interact with a few switches to open doors or activate platforms. Follow the most direct path, battling trainers as you go.
    • Mini-Boss Battle: Towards the end of the Power Plant, you will likely face a stronger Cipher Peon or even a Cipher Admin guarding the control room. Ensure your team is well-prepared.
  4. Restore Power: Once you reach the central control room, interact with the main power console. This will activate the main power switch, restoring electricity to Gateon Port and the surrounding areas.

Once power is restored, a brief cutscene will play, confirming your success. You can now exit the Power Plant and return to Gateon Port. The town will be abuzz with activity, and new dialogue options will open up as the residents react to the restored power. You've successfully completed your main objectives in Gateon Port and are now ready to continue your quest to uncover Cipher's full plans!
