Walkthrough: Phenac City
Welcome to Phenac City, a vibrant desert oasis and your next major destination in Orre! This city is a hub of activity and holds crucial clues to stopping Cipher. Prepare for some intense battles and important story developments.
Arrival and Initial Exploration
- Upon entering Phenac City, you'll immediately notice its unique architecture and bustling streets. Your first priority should be to heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center, located just to your right as you enter the main plaza.
- After healing, head left from the Pokémon Center to find the Pre-Gym. This facility serves as a training ground for aspiring trainers and a place for local battles. While not a traditional Pokémon League Gym, it offers valuable experience and a chance to test your team.
- Explore the rest of the city. There are several buildings and NPCs to interact with.
- Item Shop: Located near the Pokémon Center, stock up on essential items like Potions, Antidotes, and especially plenty of Poké Balls/Great Balls if you're low. You'll need them!
- Residential Houses: check inside the various houses. Many NPCs offer helpful tips, and some might even give you items. For instance, one house contains a woman who will give you a TM08 (Bulk Up) if you talk to her.
The Pre-Gym Challenge
The Pre-Gym in Phenac City is an excellent opportunity to gain experience and potentially snag some useful items. It consists of a series of double battles against local trainers.
- Enter the Pre-Gym, located to the west of the Pokémon Center.
- Trainer Battles: You'll face several trainers here. Remember that all battles in Pokémon Colosseum are double battles, so strategic pairing of your Pokémon is key.
- Pre-Gym Trainer 1 (e.g., Cooltrainer Fana): Often uses Pokémon like Teddiursa and Sunkern.
- Pre-Gym Trainer 2 (e.g., Fun Old Man): Might have Pokémon such as Swablu and Whismur.
- Pre-Gym Trainer 3 (e.g., Youngster Joey): Expect Pokémon like Zigzagoon and Poochyena.
- Rewards: Defeating all trainers in the Pre-Gym will usually net you some prize money and sometimes a useful item like a Super Potion or a Great Ball. More importantly, it provides valuable experience for your team.
The Mayor's House and Cipher's Intrigue
Your main objective in Phenac City involves the Mayor and uncovering Cipher's local activities. This is where the plot thickens.
- Your main objective in Phenac City is to visit the Mayor's House. It's the largest building in the city, located at the northern end of the main plaza.
- Upon entering, you'll trigger a crucial cutscene. You will witness the Mayor, a seemingly respectable figure, in a clandestine meeting with a suspicious individual. This person is revealed to be a Cipher Peon, confirming Cipher's deep roots and influence within Phenac City's leadership. The Peon will be seen handing the Mayor a briefcase, implying a payoff or illicit transaction.
- After the cutscene, the Cipher Peon will quickly depart. Speak with the Mayor. He will initially be evasive but eventually, under questioning, he will reveal more about the situation and confess to being coerced by Cipher. He will then direct you to seek out the ONBS Building in Pyrite Town, hinting that further answers and the true extent of Cipher's operations lie there. He will not mention a "Phenac City Gym" or any Cipher facility within Phenac itself.
Preparing for Pyrite Town
With the Mayor's confession, your next destination is clear: Pyrite Town. Before you leave Phenac City, ensure you are fully prepared.
- Heal and Stock Up: Return to the Pokémon Center to fully heal your team. Visit the Item Shop again and stock up on essential items. You'll want plenty of healing items (Potions, Super Potions, Antidotes, Paralyze Heals) and a good supply of Poké Balls and Great Balls, as Pyrite Town is known for its Shadow Pokémon encounters.
- Explore Thoroughly: Double-check all residential houses and talk to any remaining NPCs. You might find hidden items like a Full Restore, a TM, or valuable insights into the region.
- Team Composition: Consider your current team. Pyrite Town will introduce new challenges and different types of Shadow Pokémon. Ensure you have a balanced team with diverse types and moves. Ground, Rock, and Fighting-type moves can be particularly useful in the upcoming areas.
You have successfully navigated Phenac City and uncovered a critical piece of Cipher's scheme. Your next destination is Pyrite Town, where the real pursuit of Cipher will begin!
