Elite Four and Champion
Congratulations, Trainer! You've collected all eight Johto Badges and are ready to challenge the Elite Four and the reigning Champion. This is the ultimate test of your Pokémon training prowess. Be prepared for a gauntlet of powerful trainers and strategically diverse teams. Stock up on healing items, Revives, and status-healing items before you begin!
Preparation is Key
Before you even step foot into the Indigo Plateau, ensure your team is ready. Aim for your Pokémon to be at least Level 45-50. A balanced team with diverse types is crucial. Consider bringing Pokémon that can deal with Psychic, Fighting, Ghost, Dark, and Dragon types effectively. Here's a checklist:
- Healing Items: Max Potions, Full Restores, Hyper Potions, and Super Potions. Aim for at least 20-30 of these.
- Revives: Max Revives and Revives are essential for bringing fainted Pokémon back into the fight. Carry at least 10-15.
- Status Healers: Full Heals, Paralyze Heals, Antidotes, Burn Heals, and Ice Heals. A few of each will save you in a pinch.
- PP Restorers: Ethers and Elixirs can be lifesavers for your strongest moves during prolonged battles.
- Held Items: Equip your Pokémon with items like Leftovers, Quick Claw, or type-enhancing items if you have them.
You can purchase most of these items at the Pokémon Mart in Viridian City, which is the closest one to the Indigo Plateau. Make sure your Pokémon's movesets are optimized for damage and type coverage.
The Elite Four Challenge
The Elite Four consists of four formidable trainers, each specializing in a particular Pokémon type. You must defeat them all consecutively without leaving the Indigo Plateau. If you lose to any of them, you'll have to start from the beginning of the Elite Four challenge.
Elite Four Will (Psychic Type)
Will is the first member of the Elite Four, specializing in Psychic-type Pokémon. His team is surprisingly diverse, making him a good warm-up for what's to come.
- Pokémon Lineup:
- Xatu (Lv. 40, Psychic/Flying)
- Jynx (Lv. 41, Ice/Psychic)
- Exeggutor (Lv. 41, Grass/Psychic)
- Slowbro (Lv. 41, Water/Psychic)
- Xatu (Lv. 42, Psychic/Flying)
- Strategy:
- Dark-type Pokémon are incredibly effective against his entire team, as they are immune to Psychic attacks and deal super-effective damage. Umbreon or Tyranitar (if you managed to get one) are excellent choices.
- Ghost-type Pokémon are also strong against Psychic. Gengar or Misdreavus can do well.
- For Xatu, consider using Electric or Rock-type moves.
- Jynx is vulnerable to Fire, Rock, Bug, and Steel.
- Exeggutor is weak to Fire, Ice, Flying, Poison, and Bug.
- Slowbro can be taken down with Electric or Grass-type attacks.
- Be wary of Xatu's Confuse Ray and Jynx's Lovely Kiss, which can cause frustrating status conditions.
Elite Four Koga (Poison Type)
Koga, the former Fuchsia City Gym Leader, is now an Elite Four member, focusing on Poison-type Pokémon. His team can inflict various status conditions.
- Pokémon Lineup:
- Ariados (Lv. 40, Bug/Poison)
- Forretress (Lv. 43, Bug/Steel)
- Muk (Lv. 42, Poison)
- Venomoth (Lv. 41, Bug/Poison)
- Crobat (Lv. 44, Poison/Flying)
- Strategy:
- Psychic-type Pokémon are excellent against most of Koga's team.
- Ground-type Pokémon are also highly effective against Poison types. Donphan, Sandslash, or Marowak can sweep through much of his team.
- For Forretress, Fire-type moves are devastating.
- Crobat, being Poison/Flying, is weak to Electric, Ice, Psychic, and Rock.
- Be prepared for status effects like Poison from Muk and Sleep from Venomoth's Sleep Powder. Full Heals will be invaluable here.
Elite Four Bruno (Fighting Type)
Bruno returns from the Kanto Elite Four, still specializing in powerful Fighting-type Pokémon, with a few Rock-types thrown in for good measure.
- Pokémon Lineup:
- Hitmontop (Lv. 42, Fighting)
- Hitmonchan (Lv. 42, Fighting)
- Hitmonlee (Lv. 42, Fighting)
- Machamp (Lv. 46, Fighting)
- Onix (Lv. 43, Rock/Ground)
- Strategy:
- Flying-type Pokémon are your best bet against his Fighting types. Pidgeot, Fearow, or Skarmory can deal massive damage.
- Psychic-type Pokémon are also very strong against Fighting. Alakazam, Espeon, or Hypno will shine here.
- Onix, being Rock/Ground, is extremely vulnerable to Water and Grass-type attacks. A strong Surf or Giga Drain can one-shot it.
- Be mindful of Bruno's Pokémon's high Attack stats. They can hit hard, so keep your defenses up or aim for quick knockouts.
Elite Four Karen (Dark Type)
Karen is the final Elite Four member and a master of Dark-type Pokémon. Her team is tricky, as Dark types have few weaknesses and many resistances.
- Pokémon Lineup:
- Umbreon (Lv. 42, Dark)
- Vileplume (Lv. 42, Grass/Poison)
- Murkrow (Lv. 44, Dark/Flying)
- Gengar (Lv. 45, Ghost/Poison)
- Houndoom (Lv. 47, Dark/Fire)
- Strategy:
- Fighting-type Pokémon are super-effective against Umbreon and Houndoom. Machamp or Heracross are excellent choices.
- Bug-type Pokémon also hit Dark types hard. Heracross is a dual threat here.
- Vileplume is weak to Fire, Ice, Flying, and Psychic.
- Murkrow is vulnerable to Electric, Ice, and Rock.
- Gengar, being Ghost/Poison, is weak to Psychic and Ground. Be careful, as Gengar can hit hard with Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb.
- Houndoom's Dark/Fire typing makes it weak to Fighting, Ground, Rock, and Water.
- Karen's team is designed to exploit weaknesses and inflict status. Be ready with Full Restores.
The Champion: Lance (Dragon Type)
After defeating the Elite Four, you'll face the reigning Pokémon Champion, Lance, the Dragon Master. His team is incredibly powerful and features multiple Dragon-type Pokémon, known for their high stats and devastating attacks.
- Pokémon Lineup:
- Gyarados (Lv. 44, Water/Flying)
- Dragonite (Lv. 47, Dragon/Flying)
- Dragonite (Lv. 47, Dragon/Flying)
- Aerodactyl (Lv. 46, Rock/Flying)
- Charizard (Lv. 46, Fire/Flying)
- Dragonite (Lv. 50, Dragon/Flying)
- Strategy:
- Ice-type Pokémon and moves are your absolute best friend here. Dragon-types are quadruple weak to Ice! A powerful Ice Beam or Blizzard from a strong Ice-type (like Jynx, Lapras, or even a Feraligatr with Ice Punch) can sweep through his Dragonites.
- Electric-type Pokémon are excellent against Gyarados, Aerodactyl, and Charizard. Raikou (if you caught it), Jolteon, or Ampharos can deal significant damage.
- Rock-type moves are also effective against Gyarados, Aerodactyl, and Charizard.
- Gyarados can be a threat with Dragon Rage and Hyper Beam. Take it out quickly with Electric attacks.
- Lance's Dragonites are incredibly fast and hit hard. They often carry powerful attacks like Outrage or Hyper Beam. Focus on exploiting their Ice weakness.
- Aerodactyl is fast and can use Rock Slide. Water or Electric moves work well.
- Charizard is weak to Water, Electric, and Rock.
- Expect Lance to use Full Restores frequently. This is where your PP restorers might come in handy. Don't be afraid to use your own Full Restores to keep your key attackers healthy.
Once Lance is defeated, congratulations! You are the new Pokémon Champion of the Johto region. Enjoy the Hall of Fame ceremony and prepare for the post-game adventures that await you in Kanto!
