Strategy:
Falkner is the first Gym Leader, specializing in Flying-type Pokémon. His Pokémon are weak to Electric and Rock-type moves. Your best bet is to have a Geodude (found in Dark Cave or Route 46) or a Mareep (found on Route 32) if you've caught and trained one. Geodude's Rock Throw will be super effective against both Pidgey and Pidgeotto. If you chose Totodile, Water Gun can deal decent damage, but it's not super effective.
Pidgeotto's Mud-Slap can lower your Pokémon's accuracy, so be prepared with Potions if the battle drags on. Try to defeat Pidgey quickly to conserve your resources for Pidgeotto. If you don't have a strong Electric or Rock-type, focus on using your starter's strongest attacks and keep your HP high with Potions. Chikorita and Cyndaquil will struggle more here due to type disadvantage or neutrality.
