The Daycare and Breeding mechanics in Pokémon Crystal are essential for raising Pokémon, obtaining new moves, and even hatching rare Pokémon. Mastering these strategies can significantly enhance your team's potential.

The Daycare Center, located on Route 34, allows you to leave up to two of your Pokémon with the Daycare Man and his wife. They will level up your Pokémon over time, but at a slower rate than battling. The primary benefits of the Daycare are:

  • Leveling Up: Your Pokémon will gain experience and level up while in the Daycare. This is useful for Pokémon that are difficult to train or if you want to focus on other aspects of your team.
  • Breeding: If you leave two compatible Pokémon of opposite genders (or one compatible Pokémon with a Ditto), they may produce an Egg. This is the only way to obtain new Pokémon outside of wild encounters, trades, and story events.

Breeding Strategies:

Breeding in Pokémon Crystal follows specific rules and offers several strategic advantages:

  • Compatibility: Pokémon belong to "Egg Groups." For breeding to occur, both Pokémon must be in the same Egg Group. The exception is Ditto, which can breed with almost any Pokémon (excluding other Dittos and Legendary Pokémon).
  • Egg Production: The Daycare Man will inform you if an Egg has been found. The speed at which an Egg is produced depends on the level difference between the two Pokémon and their compatibility. The greater the compatibility and the smaller the level difference, the faster an Egg will be produced.
  • Hatching Eggs: Once you receive an Egg, you must carry it in your party. The Egg will hatch after a certain number of steps are taken. Pokémon with abilities like Flame Body or Magma Armor (not present in Crystal) would speed up hatching, but in Crystal, it's purely based on steps.
  • Inherited Moves: A Pokémon hatched from an Egg can inherit moves from its parents. If a parent Pokémon knows a move that the baby Pokémon can learn via TM or by level-up, and the baby Pokémon is at a low enough level to learn it, it may be hatched with that move. This is crucial for teaching powerful moves that might otherwise be difficult to obtain.
  • Stats (IVs): The Individual Values (IVs) of the parent Pokémon have a chance to be passed down to the offspring. This is a complex mechanic, but generally, breeding Pokémon with good IVs can result in offspring with better stats.
  • Shiny Breeding: As mentioned in the Shiny Hunting Guide, breeding in Pokémon Crystal does not inherently increase the odds of hatching a Shiny Pokémon. The base odds of 1 in 8192 apply to each egg.

Daycare Tips:

  • Cost: There is a small fee to retrieve your Pokémon from the Daycare, based on the number of levels they gained.
  • Move Deletion: If a Pokémon in the Daycare learns a new move and already knows four, it will forget the oldest move to make room for the new one. Be mindful of this if you are trying to preserve specific moves.
  • EV Training: While the Daycare levels up Pokémon, it does not affect Effort Values (EVs). If you are EV training, it's best to battle with your Pokémon directly.

Utilizing the Daycare and breeding effectively can lead to a more powerful and versatile team, allowing you to tackle any challenge Pokémon Crystal throws at you.
