Understanding type matchups is perhaps the most crucial aspect of Pokémon battles. Every Pokémon and every move has a type (or two). Attacks can be 'super effective' (2x damage), 'not very effective' (0.5x damage), or have no effect (0x damage) based on the target's type. Knowing these interactions is key to winning battles.

Key Type Matchup Principles:

  • Fire is strong against Grass, Ice, Bug, Steel. Weak against Water, Ground, Rock.
  • Water is strong against Fire, Ground, Rock. Weak against Grass, Electric.
  • Grass is strong against Water, Ground, Rock. Weak against Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug.
  • Electric is strong against Water, Flying. Weak against Ground.
  • Fighting is strong against Normal, Ice, Rock, Dark, Steel. Weak against Flying, Psychic, Bug.

Building a balanced team means having Pokémon with diverse types and move pools to cover each other's weaknesses. Aim for a team of six Pokémon that can collectively handle a wide range of opposing types. For example, a Fire-type Pokémon might be weak to Water, but an Electric-type on your team can cover that weakness. consider dual-type Pokémon, which can have both advantages and additional weaknesses.
