Friendship and Happiness Mechanics

In Pokémon Crystal, a hidden stat called "Friendship" (often referred to as Happiness) plays a crucial role for certain Pokémon evolutions and in-game events. Unlike previous generations, some Pokémon now require a high Friendship level to evolve. Understanding and manipulating this mechanic can be key to completing your Pokédex and maximizing your team's potential.

Checking Friendship Levels

Unfortunately, there's no direct numerical display for a Pokémon's Friendship in Crystal. However, you can get an approximation by visiting the Friendship Checker in Goldenrod City.

  • Location: Goldenrod City, in the house directly to the east of the Bike Shop.
  • NPC: A woman inside will evaluate the Friendship of the first Pokémon in your party.
  • Responses:
    • "It looks like it's very friendly toward you." (Highest Friendship)
    • "It looks like it's quite friendly toward you." (High Friendship)
    • "It looks like it's a little friendly toward you." (Moderate Friendship)
    • "It doesn't seem to like you much." (Low Friendship)
    • "It looks like it dislikes you quite a lot." (Lowest Friendship)

Increasing Friendship

Several actions will boost your Pokémon's Friendship. Consistency is key!

1. Walking with Your Pokémon

The simplest method. Every 256 steps you take with a Pokémon in your active party will slightly increase its Friendship. This is a passive but effective way to build bonds over time.

2. Leveling Up

Each time a Pokémon gains a level, its Friendship increases. The higher its current Friendship, the greater the boost from leveling up.

3. Using Stat-Boosting Items

Administering certain items will significantly increase a Pokémon's Friendship. These are excellent for a quick boost.

  • Protein: Increases Attack. Available at Goldenrod Dept. Store (5F) for 9800 P.
  • Iron: Increases Defense. Available at Goldenrod Dept. Store (5F) for 9800 P.
  • Carbos: Increases Speed. Available at Goldenrod Dept. Store (5F) for 9800 P.
  • Calcium: Increases Special Attack. Available at Goldenrod Dept. Store (5F) for 9800 P.
  • HP Up: Increases HP. Available at Goldenrod Dept. Store (5F) for 9800 P.
  • Zinc: Increases Special Defense. Available at Goldenrod Dept. Store (5F) for 9800 P.
  • Rare Candy: Increases a Pokémon's level by one. Found throughout the world (e.g., Route 34, Route 42, Mt. Mortar).

Strategy: If you have excess money, buying multiple Protein, Iron, etc., from the Goldenrod Dept. Store and using them on your target Pokémon is a fast way to raise Friendship.

4. Grooming in Goldenrod City

The Haircut Brothers in Goldenrod City offer a unique service that can boost Friendship.

  • Location: Goldenrod City Underground Path.
  • NPCs: Two brothers, one on Sunday/Wednesday, the other on Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday.
  • Cost: 300 P (younger brother), 500 P (older brother).
  • Effect: The younger brother gives a smaller boost, the older brother a larger one. You can only get one haircut per day.
  • Strategy: Prioritize the older brother for faster results, but use either if available.

5. Holding the Soothe Bell (Crystal Exclusive)

The Soothe Bell is a new item introduced in Crystal that doubles the rate at which Friendship increases.

  • Location: Ecruteak City, given by a woman in the house directly south of the Pokémon Center.
  • How to Use: Have the Pokémon you want to befriend hold the Soothe Bell.
  • Strategy: Always equip the Soothe Bell on any Pokémon you're trying to evolve via Friendship or maximize its happiness.

Decreasing Friendship

Be mindful of actions that can lower your Pokémon's Friendship:

  • Fainting in Battle: Each time a Pokémon faints, its Friendship decreases.
  • Using Bitter Medicine: Items like EnergyPowder, Heal Powder, Energy Root, and Revival Herb significantly lower Friendship due to their bitter taste. Avoid these if you're trying to raise Friendship.
  • Trading: Trading a Pokémon resets its Friendship to its base value for the new trainer.

Friendship Evolutions

The most significant impact of Friendship is on certain Pokémon evolutions. Once a Pokémon reaches a sufficiently high Friendship level, it will evolve the next time it gains a level.

  • Espeon: Eevee evolves into Espeon when it levels up with high Friendship during the daytime.
  • Umbreon: Eevee evolves into Umbreon when it levels up with high Friendship during the nighttime.
  • Togetic: Togepi evolves into Togetic when it levels up with high Friendship.
  • Blissey: Chansey evolves into Blissey when it levels up with high Friendship.
  • Golbat: Golbat evolves into Crobat when it levels up with high Friendship.
  • Pichu: Pichu evolves into Pikachu when it levels up with high Friendship.
  • Cleffa: Cleffa evolves into Clefairy when it levels up with high Friendship.
  • Igglybuff: Igglybuff evolves into Jigglypuff when it levels up with high Friendship.

Pro-Tip: To ensure a Friendship evolution, save your game, then give the Pokémon a Rare Candy or engage in a battle to level it up. If it doesn't evolve, its Friendship isn't high enough. Reload your save and continue building Friendship.
