Technical Machines (TMs) and Hidden Machines (HMs) are items that teach your Pokémon new moves. TMs are single-use, while HMs can be used infinitely.

Hidden Machines (HMs)
HMs are crucial for navigating the world and progressing the story. They also tend to be decent moves in battle, though some are less powerful than others. You'll need specific Gym Badges to use them outside of battle.
- HM01 Cut: Cuts down small trees. Obtained in Ilex Forest. Requires Zephyr Badge.
- HM02 Fly: Instantly travel to previously visited towns. Obtained in Cianwood City. Requires Storm Badge.
- HM03 Surf: Travel across water. Obtained in Ecruteak City. Requires Fog Badge.
- HM04 Strength: Move large boulders. Obtained in Olivine City. Requires Mineral Badge.
- HM05 Flash: Lights up dark caves. Obtained in Sprout Tower. Requires Zephyr Badge.
- HM06 Whirlpool: Cross whirlpools. Obtained in Mahogany Town. Requires Glacier Badge.
- HM07 Waterfall: Climb waterfalls. Obtained in Ice Path. Requires Rising Badge.
Technical Machines (TMs)
TMs teach a wide variety of moves, from powerful attacks to useful status effects. They are found throughout the game, often as rewards for defeating Gym Leaders, winning the Bug-Catching Contest, or simply hidden in the environment. There are 50 TMs in Pokémon Crystal. Some notable TMs include:
- TM01 DynamicPunch: Powerful Fighting-type move, but low accuracy. (Chuck's Gym)
- TM08 Rock Smash: Weak Fighting-type move, but breaks cracked rocks. (Route 36)
- TM13 Snore: Normal-type move, only usable while asleep. (Dark Cave)
- TM17 Protect: Protects from most attacks for one turn. (Goldenrod Dept. Store)
- TM25 Thunder: Powerful Electric-type move. (Radio Tower)
- TM26 Earthquake: Powerful Ground-type move. (Victory Road)
- TM31 Mud-Slap: Ground-type move that lowers accuracy. (Falkner's Gym)
- TM38 Fire Blast: Powerful Fire-type move. (Goldenrod Game Corner)
Choose which Pokémon learn TMs carefully, as they are one-time use.
