Congratulations, Champion! Defeating the Elite Four and Lance is just the beginning of your journey in Pokémon Crystal. The world of Johto and Kanto still holds many secrets, legendary Pokémon, and trainers eager for a rematch. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the most rewarding post-game challenges and activities.
The Kanto Region: A New Adventure Awaits
After conquering the Johto League, Professor Elm will contact you, granting you access to the Kanto region. Head to Olivine City and board the S.S. Aqua to Vermilion City. Kanto offers eight new Gym Leaders to challenge, a plethora of new Pokémon to catch, and familiar faces to encounter.
- S.S. Aqua Journey: Before reaching Kanto, explore the S.S. Aqua. You'll find trainers to battle and items like the Leftovers in the trash can in the kitchen. speak to the captain to disembark.
- Kanto Gym Leaders: Each Kanto Gym Leader presents a unique challenge. Be prepared for higher-leveled Pokémon and strategic battles.
- Lt. Surge (Vermilion City): Electric-type specialist. Ground-type Pokémon are highly recommended.
- Erika (Celadon City): Grass-type specialist. Fire, Flying, and Bug-type moves will be effective.
- Janine (Fuchsia City): Poison-type specialist. Psychic and Ground-type Pokémon will be your best bet.
- Sabrina (Saffron City): Psychic-type specialist. Dark and Bug-type moves are super effective, but be wary of her powerful Psychic attacks.
- Misty (Cerulean City): Water-type specialist. Electric and Grass-type Pokémon will dominate.
- Blaine (Cinnabar Island/Seafoam Islands): Fire-type specialist. Water and Ground-type moves are essential.
- Brock (Pewter City): Rock-type specialist. Water and Grass-type Pokémon will make short work of his team.
- Blue (Viridian City): The former Kanto Champion now leads the Viridian Gym. He uses a diverse team, so bring a balanced party.
- Power Plant: Located east of Cerulean City, the Power Plant is home to the legendary Zapdos. You'll need to restore power first by finding a missing machine part.
- Cerulean Cave: After defeating all Kanto Gym Leaders, you'll gain access to Cerulean Cave, where the powerful Mewtwo awaits. This is one of the toughest battles in the game, so come prepared with high-level Pokémon and plenty of Ultra Balls.
Legendary Pokémon Hunts
Several legendary Pokémon are available to catch in the post-game, each with its own unique challenge:
- Raikou and Entei: These two roam the Johto region after you awaken them in the Burned Tower in Ecruteak City. Their locations change frequently, so use your Pokégear's map to track them. A Pokémon with Mean Look or Arena Trap is invaluable for preventing their escape.
- Suicune: Unlike Raikou and Entei, Suicune has a fixed encounter path. You'll encounter it multiple times throughout Johto and Kanto before finally battling it at the Cerulean Cape in Kanto.
- Lugia and Ho-Oh:
- Lugia: To catch Lugia, you'll need the Silver Wing. This item is given to you by an old man in Pewter City after you've obtained all 16 badges (Johto and Kanto). Head to the Whirl Islands near Olivine City to find it.
- Ho-Oh: The Rainbow Wing is required for Ho-Oh. This item is obtained from the Wise Trio in Ecruteak City after you've captured Raikou, Entei, and Suicune. Ho-Oh resides at the top of the Tin Tower (Bell Tower).
The Ultimate Challenge: Red
After collecting all 16 badges and traversing both regions, your final and most formidable opponent awaits atop Mt. Silver: Red, the protagonist from the original Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow. He boasts an incredibly powerful team of high-level Pokémon, including a Level 81 Pikachu. This battle will test your team's strength, strategy, and endurance. Stock up on healing items and bring your absolute best Pokémon.
Other Notable Activities
- Battle Tower: Located in the Battle Frontier (accessible via Olivine City's port), the Battle Tower offers a series of challenging battles against trainers with randomly generated teams. This is an excellent place to test your competitive skills and earn valuable items.
- Complete the Pokédex: With access to Kanto and all legendary Pokémon, you can now strive to catch all 251 Pokémon. This includes trading with friends for version exclusives and evolving Pokémon through various methods.
- Rematch Gym Leaders: Some Gym Leaders in both Johto and Kanto will be available for rematches, often with stronger teams. Keep an eye on your Pokégear for calls from them.
- Item Hunting: Explore every nook and cranny of both regions for hidden items, TMs, and rare berries. Many areas that were previously inaccessible will now be open with new HMs.
- Breeding and Training: Refine your Pokémon team by breeding for optimal stats (IVs) and training them to their full potential. The Day Care in Route 34 is essential for breeding.
