Game Corner and Mini-Games

Welcome, aspiring trainers, to the vibrant and often lucrative world of the Game Corner! While Pokémon Crystal offers a rich adventure across Johto and Kanto, sometimes you need a break from battling and training. The Game Corner provides just that – a chance to test your luck, earn valuable prizes, and even catch some unique Pokémon. This section will guide you through everything you need to know to master the Game Corner and its mini-games.

Goldenrod City Game Corner

The primary hub for gambling and prize redemption in Johto is the Goldenrod City Game Corner, located in the heart of Goldenrod City. You'll recognize it by its bright, inviting entrance. Before you can play, however, you'll need some currency specific to the Game Corner: Coins.

Acquiring Coins

There are two main ways to get your hands on Coins:

  1. Purchase Directly:
    • Head to the counter on the right side of the Game Corner.
    • You can buy Coins in two denominations:
      • 50 Coins for 1,000 Pokedollars
      • 500 Coins for 10,000 Pokedollars
    • Strategy: While buying 500 Coins at once saves you a little time, the price per Coin is the same. Purchase what you can afford, but be mindful of your Pokedollar reserves, especially early in the game.
  2. Win at the Slot Machines:
    • The Slot Machines are the main attraction for earning Coins. Each play costs 3 Coins.
    • Gameplay: Press A to start the reels spinning, then A again to stop them one by one. The goal is to line up three identical symbols.
    • Payouts:
      • Three 7s: 300 Coins
      • Three Pokeballs: 100 Coins
      • Three Stars: 50 Coins
      • Three Watermelons: 15 Coins
      • Three Cherries: 5 Coins
      • Two Cherries (any position): 2 Coins
    • Strategy: Slot machines are purely luck-based. There's no foolproof strategy, but some players report better luck on specific machines or by trying different timing. The best approach is to set a budget and stick to it. If you're running low on Pokedollars, it might be more efficient to buy Coins directly rather than rely on winning them from the slots.

Game Corner Prizes

Once you've accumulated a good number of Coins, you can exchange them for valuable items and even rare Pokémon at the prize counter on the left side of the Game Corner. The prizes available are:

  • TM32 (Double Team): 2,000 Coins
  • TM29 (Psychic): 3,500 Coins
  • TM35 (Sleep Talk): 3,000 Coins
  • Dratini: 2,100 Coins (Level 15)
  • Porygon: 9,999 Coins (Level 15)

Prize Strategy:

  • TM29 (Psychic) is an incredibly powerful Special Attack move and is highly recommended for many Psychic-type or special attacking Pokémon. It's a fantastic investment.
  • Dratini is an excellent choice if you're looking for a powerful Dragon-type Pokémon. It evolves into Dragonair and then the mighty Dragonite. At Level 15, it's ready to join your team and grow.
  • Porygon is a unique Normal-type Pokémon that can only be obtained here. While expensive, it's a good choice for collectors or those looking for a versatile Normal-type.
  • TM32 (Double Team) can be useful for evasion strategies, but its effectiveness in competitive play is often debated.
  • TM35 (Sleep Talk) is a niche move, primarily used in conjunction with Rest to allow a Pokémon to attack while asleep.

Celadon City Game Corner (Kanto)

After you've defeated the Elite Four and traveled to Kanto, you'll find another Game Corner in Celadon City. This one operates similarly to the Goldenrod City Game Corner, offering different prizes.

Acquiring Celadon Coins

Just like in Goldenrod, you can buy Coins or win them at the slot machines. The prices for buying Coins are identical:

  • 50 Coins for 1,000 Pokedollars
  • 500 Coins for 10,000 Pokedollars

The slot machines also function the same way, with identical payouts.

Celadon Game Corner Prizes

The prize selection in Celadon City is different and offers some highly sought-after Technical Machines:

  • TM14 (Blizzard): 5,500 Coins
  • TM25 (Thunder): 5,500 Coins
  • TM38 (Fire Blast): 5,500 Coins

Prize Strategy:

  • These three TMs represent the most powerful special attacks of their respective types. They are incredibly valuable for any special attacking Pokémon that can learn them.
  • Blizzard, Thunder, and Fire Blast are all excellent choices, though they have lower accuracy than their weaker counterparts (Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Flamethrower). However, their raw power can turn the tide in tough battles.
  • Prioritize these based on the needs of your current team. If you have a strong Water-type, Blizzard might be a great addition. If you have an Electric-type, Thunder is a must-have.

Mini-Game: The Pokémon Communication Center (PCC)

While not a "Game Corner" in the traditional sense, the Pokémon Communication Center (PCC) in Goldenrod City offers a unique mini-game specific to Pokémon Crystal: the Mobile Adapter GB Mini-Game. This game was designed for use with the Mobile Adapter GB peripheral, which allowed players to connect online. Although the online service is no longer active, the mini-game itself is still accessible offline.

Playing the Mobile Adapter GB Mini-Game

  1. Location: Enter the Pokémon Communication Center in Goldenrod City (the large building next to the Department Store).
  2. Access: Talk to the attendant at the counter on the far right.
  3. Gameplay: The mini-game involves a simple matching puzzle. You'll be presented with a grid of cards, and your goal is to match pairs of Pokémon.
  4. Rewards: Successfully completing the mini-game can yield various items, including rare berries or other consumables. The specific rewards can vary.
  5. Strategy: This mini-game is a test of memory. Try to remember the location of each Pokémon as you flip cards. There's no cost to play, so you can attempt it as many times as you like. It's a fun way to pass the time and potentially earn some useful items without spending Pokedollars or Coins.

Mastering the Game Corner and its mini-games can provide a significant advantage, offering powerful TMs and rare Pokémon that are otherwise difficult or impossible to obtain. Good luck, trainer, and may the odds be ever in your favor!
