Pokémon Crystal is brimming with hidden items and subtle secrets that can significantly aid your journey through Johto and Kanto. Many of these require keen observation, specific HMs, or a bit of backtracking. This section will guide you through uncovering some of the most valuable and easily missed treasures.

Essential Item Finder Locations

The Item Finder (or Dowsing Machine) is your best friend for sniffing out invisible items. Always keep it handy, especially in areas with suspicious-looking tiles or dead ends.

  • Route 34 (North of Goldenrod City): Just before entering Ilex Forest, search the small patch of grass to the right of the path. You'll find a hidden Super Potion.
  • Ilex Forest: After you've helped the Headbutt user, return to the area where you found the Farfetch'd. Use the Item Finder around the trees to locate a hidden Antidote and a Revive.
  • Route 35 (North of Goldenrod City): Near the entrance to the National Park, check the small patch of grass to the west of the path for a hidden Repel.
  • Ecruteak City: In the northwest corner of the city, near the Burned Tower, search the ground between the two small trees for a hidden Full Heal.
  • Mahogany Town: East of the Pokémon Center, there's a small patch of grass. Search here for a hidden Hyper Potion.
  • Route 43 (North of Mahogany Town): Just outside the Team Rocket Hideout, near the lake, use the Item Finder around the small island accessible by Surf to find a hidden Max Elixir.
  • Ice Path: On the first ice puzzle floor, navigate to the very top-right corner. Search the wall for a hidden Carbos.
  • Route 26 (South of Victory Road): After defeating the Elite Four, return here. Surf across the water to the west and search the small patch of land for a hidden Rare Candy.

HM-Required Hidden Items

Certain items are only accessible once you've obtained specific Hidden Machines (HMs). revisit earlier areas!

  • Cut:
    • Route 32 (South of Violet City): After getting Cut, return to the Pokémon Center. Cut the small tree to the east and follow the path to find a hidden Great Ball.
    • Route 36 (West of Violet City): Cut the tree blocking the path to the north to access a Miracle Seed (if you haven't already).
  • Surf:
    • New Bark Town: Once you have Surf, head to the water in the southeast. Surf down and around to find a hidden Rare Candy on a small patch of land.
    • Route 40 (South of Olivine City): Surf west from Olivine City. Before entering the Whirl Islands, search the small island to the south for a hidden Heart Scale.
    • Route 19 (South of Fuchsia City - Kanto): Surf south from Fuchsia City. Keep an eye out for a small strip of land with a hidden Max Revive.
  • Strength:
    • Mt. Mortar (Entrance from Route 42): Push the boulder on the first floor to access a small area with a hidden Max Potion.
    • Victory Road: There are several boulders to push. One leads to a hidden Full Restore on the second floor.
  • Waterfall:
    • Tohjo Falls (Between Johto and Kanto): Use Waterfall to climb up the waterfall. At the top, search the small patch of land for a hidden Rare Candy.

Time-Based Secrets

Pokémon Crystal introduced a real-time clock, influencing various in-game events and item availability.

  • Daily Items from Mom: Your mom will occasionally buy items for you with the money you save. These can include useful items like Super Potions, Great Balls, and even Nuggets. check in with her regularly!
  • Apricorns: Different colored Apricorns grow on trees throughout Johto, and they regrow daily. Collect them and take them to Kurt in Azalea Town to craft special Poké Balls.
    • Black Apricorn: Route 37 (top-right tree), Route 45 (bottom-left tree). Makes Heavy Ball.
    • Blue Apricorn: Route 29 (right tree), Route 38 (top-right tree), Route 42 (center tree). Makes Lure Ball.
    • Green Apricorn: Route 30 (top-right tree), Route 34 (bottom-right tree), Route 42 (left tree). Makes Friend Ball.
    • Pink Apricorn: Route 30 (bottom-right tree), Route 42 (right tree). Makes Love Ball.
    • Red Apricorn: Route 37 (bottom-right tree), Route 44 (top-right tree). Makes Level Ball.
    • White Apricorn: Route 39 (top-right tree). Makes Fast Ball.
    • Yellow Apricorn: Route 46 (bottom-right tree). Makes Moon Ball.
  • Move Tutor (Blackthorn City): The Move Tutor in Blackthorn City (in the house to the right of the Pokémon Center) will teach your Pokémon a powerful move once per week, but only on specific days. visit him!

Miscellaneous Secrets

  • Snorlax Blocking Route 12 (Kanto): After restoring power to the Kanto Radio Tower, tune your PokéGear to the Poké Flute channel (Channel 20). Interact with Snorlax to wake it up and initiate a battle. This is your only chance to catch it!
  • Mewtwo's Cave (Cerulean Cave - Kanto): After defeating the Elite Four and obtaining all 16 badges, you can access Cerulean Cave (west of Cerulean City) where the legendary Mewtwo awaits. Be prepared for a tough battle!
  • Hidden Items in the Game Corner (Goldenrod City): While not "hidden" in the traditional sense, the Game Corner offers valuable TMs and items for coins. Don't underestimate the power of the slots and card flip for acquiring useful resources early on.
  • Leftovers (Route 12 - Kanto): After waking Snorlax, check the spot where it was sleeping. You'll find the incredibly useful Leftovers item, which restores a small amount of HP each turn in battle.
