Radio Programs and Phone Calls
The Pokégear in Pokémon Crystal is more than just a map and a phone; it's your gateway to valuable information and even some hidden encounters. Mastering its functions, particularly the Radio and Phone features, can significantly enhance your journey through Johto and Kanto.
The Radio Card: Tuning In for Success
The Radio Card is obtained in Goldenrod City. After defeating Whitney at the Goldenrod Gym, head to the Radio Tower. Speak to the woman at the counter on the ground floor, and she will give you the Radio Card. This allows you to tune into various programs across the airwaves.
Radio Programs and Their Benefits:
- Pokémon Channel: This is your go-to for daily Pokémon-related news, including reports on mass outbreaks of rare Pokémon. Pay close attention to these reports! For example, if you hear about a mass outbreak of Dunsparce in Dark Cave, head there immediately for a higher chance of encountering one. The specific Pokémon and locations change daily, so check back often.
- Buena's Password: Broadcast on the Buena's Place channel (Channel 20.5), this program airs at specific times throughout the day. Listen carefully for Buena to announce a password. Once you hear it, head to the Goldenrod Radio Tower and speak to Buena on the second floor. Give her the correct password, and she'll reward you with a Point Card. Accumulate points by correctly guessing passwords, which can then be exchanged for various items, including rare TMs like TM33 (Ice Punch) and TM35 (Sleep Talk), and even Rare Candies.
- Lucky Number Show: Tune into this program daily. If the last five digits of your Trainer ID match the lucky number drawn, you win a prize! The prizes vary in rarity, from useful Potions to valuable Master Balls (though the latter is extremely rare). It's worth checking every day.
- Professor Elm's Pokémon Talk: Provides general information about Pokémon, often hinting at evolutionary methods or type matchups. While not directly actionable for item acquisition, it can be helpful for new players.
- Music Channels: While not offering direct gameplay benefits, these channels provide background music that can sometimes influence wild Pokémon encounter rates or even their moods (though this effect is subtle and not fully confirmed).
The Phone Function: Staying Connected
The Phone function allows you to register numbers of various NPCs you meet throughout your journey. These calls can be incredibly useful for tracking down rare Pokémon, obtaining items, and even triggering rematches.
Key Contacts and Their Benefits:
- Trainers: Many trainers you battle will offer to exchange numbers. Registering them is highly recommended.
- Rematches: Trainers will occasionally call you for a rematch. This is an excellent way to gain experience and money, especially in the post-game when their Pokémon levels increase significantly. Keep an eye on your Pokégear for incoming calls!
- Item Tips: Some trainers will call to inform you about rare items they've found or seen, or even offer to give you items directly. For example, Fisherman Wilton on Route 44 might call to give you a Sharp Beak.
- Pokémon Sightings: Certain trainers will call to tell you about specific Pokémon appearing in unusual locations or in higher numbers. This is crucial for completing your Pokédex.
- Professor Elm: After certain story events, Professor Elm will call you with important updates or to congratulate you on your progress. He might also call to give you a Rare Candy after you've caught a certain number of Pokémon.
- Mom: Your mother will occasionally call to ask if you want her to save money for you. While this can be useful for saving up for expensive items like the Bike, be aware that she'll spend some of it on items like Super Potions or Full Heals, which she'll then mail to you. This can be a mixed blessing depending on your needs.
- Bill: After you meet him in Goldenrod City, Bill will call you when he has a Eevee to give away at his house in Goldenrod. This is a one-time opportunity, so make sure you have a free slot in your party!
- Gym Leaders: While not all Gym Leaders will register their numbers, some, like Falkner, will call you to offer advice or congratulate you.
Managing Your Phone Contacts:
- You can store up to 10 phone numbers at a time. If you try to register an 11th, you'll be prompted to delete an existing contact. Prioritize trainers who offer rematches or valuable item/Pokémon tips.
- To call someone, open your Pokégear, select "Phone," and choose the contact. You can only call contacts who are currently available.
- Pay attention to the time of day. Some trainers are more likely to call or be available for calls at specific times.
By actively utilizing both the Radio and Phone functions of your Pokégear, you'll uncover many secrets, acquire valuable items, and gain an edge in your quest to become a Pokémon Master!
