Status Conditions Explained
Status conditions are debilitating effects that can be inflicted upon your Pokémon during battle, significantly impacting their performance. Understanding how to inflict, cure, and prevent these conditions is crucial for any aspiring Pokémon Trainer in the Sinnoh region. This section details the primary status conditions, their effects, and how to manage them effectively.
Major Status Conditions
These conditions persist after battle unless cured, and only one major status condition can affect a Pokémon at a time.
Poison (PSN)
- Effect: Your Pokémon loses HP at the end of each turn in battle. Outside of battle, your Pokémon will lose 1 HP every four steps you take on the overworld.
- Infliction: Many Poison-type Pokémon moves, such as Poison Sting or Sludge, can inflict Poison.
- Cure:
- Antidote: Purchase from any Poké Mart for 100 P.
- Full Heal: Cures all major status conditions. Available at later Poké Marts (e.g., Veilstone City Department Store) for 600 P.
- Full Restore: Heals all HP and cures all major status conditions. Expensive, found later in the game or purchased for 3000 P.
- Heal Powder: A bitter medicine that cures all status conditions, but lowers Pokémon's friendship. Purchase from the Herb Shop in Eterna City for 450 P.
- Pecha Berry: A held item that automatically cures Poison. Found on various routes (e.g., Route 204, Route 205) or grown in berry patches.
- Pokémon Center: The fastest and cheapest way to cure all status conditions and heal your party.
- Strategy: Be wary of Poison-type opponents. If your Pokémon is poisoned, prioritize curing it, especially if you're exploring without immediate access to a Pokémon Center, to prevent unnecessary HP loss.
Paralysis (PAR)
- Effect: Your Pokémon's Speed stat is halved. Additionally, there's a 25% chance your Pokémon will be "fully paralyzed" and unable to move during its turn.
- Infliction: Electric-type moves like Thunderbolt or Thunder Wave are common culprits. Some Normal-type moves like Body Slam can also cause paralysis.
- Cure:
- Parlyz Heal: Purchase from any Poké Mart for 200 P.
- Full Heal / Full Restore / Heal Powder: (See Poison section for details).
- Cheri Berry: A held item that automatically cures Paralysis. Found on various routes (e.g., Route 203, Route 207) or grown in berry patches.
- Pokémon Center: (See Poison section for details).
- Strategy: Paralysis can be incredibly frustrating, especially for fast Pokémon. Keep Parlyz Heals or Cheri Berries on hand if facing Electric-type Gym Leaders or wild Pokémon.
Burn (BRN)
- Effect: Your Pokémon loses HP at the end of each turn in battle (similar to Poison, but with a different damage calculation). Additionally, your Pokémon's Attack stat is halved.
- Infliction: Fire-type moves such as Flamethrower or Will-O-Wisp are the primary causes.
- Cure:
- Burn Heal: Purchase from any Poké Mart for 250 P.
- Full Heal / Full Restore / Heal Powder: (See Poison section for details).
- Rawst Berry: A held item that automatically cures Burn. Found on various routes (e.g., Route 208, Route 210) or grown in berry patches.
- Pokémon Center: (See Poison section for details).
- Strategy: Burn is particularly detrimental to physical attackers due to the Attack stat reduction. Prioritize curing burned physical attackers immediately.
Sleep (SLP)
- Effect: Your Pokémon is unable to move for 1-3 turns.
- Infliction: Moves like Spore, Sleep Powder, or Hypnosis are designed to induce sleep.
- Cure:
- Awakening: Purchase from any Poké Mart for 250 P.
- Full Heal / Full Restore / Heal Powder: (See Poison section for details).
- Chesto Berry: A held item that automatically cures Sleep. Found on various routes (e.g., Route 206, Route 209) or grown in berry patches.
- Pokémon Center: (See Poison section for details).
- Strategy: Sleep can render your Pokémon completely useless. If you anticipate facing Pokémon with sleep-inducing moves, consider holding a Chesto Berry or having an Awakening ready.
Freeze (FRZ)
- Effect: Your Pokémon is completely unable to move. This condition is rare and can last indefinitely, though there's a small chance of thawing each turn.
- Infliction: Certain Ice-type moves, like Ice Beam or Blizzard, have a small chance of freezing the target.
- Cure:
- Ice Heal: Purchase from any Poké Mart for 250 P.
- Full Heal / Full Restore / Heal Powder: (See Poison section for details).
- Aspear Berry: A held item that automatically cures Freeze. Found on various routes (e.g., Route 212, Route 215) or grown in berry patches.
- Pokémon Center: (See Poison section for details).
- Strategy: While rare, Freeze is one of the most debilitating conditions. Always carry Ice Heals or Aspear Berries if you plan on challenging powerful Ice-type Pokémon.
Minor Status Conditions (Non-Volatile)
These conditions typically wear off after battle or after a few turns, and multiple minor status conditions can affect a Pokémon simultaneously with a major one.
Confusion
- Effect: Your Pokémon has a 50% chance of hitting itself in its confusion, dealing damage instead of attacking the opponent. Confusion typically lasts for 1-4 turns.
- Infliction: Moves like Confuse Ray, Supersonic, or Psybeam often cause confusion.
- Cure:
- Full Heal / Full Restore / Heal Powder: (See Poison section for details).
- Persim Berry: A held item that automatically cures Confusion. Found on various routes (e.g., Route 211, Route 214) or grown in berry patches.
- Switching out: Swapping your Pokémon for another will instantly cure confusion.
- Strategy: Confusion can be very disruptive. If a Pokémon is confused, consider switching it out to clear the status or using a Persim Berry if it's a crucial attacker.
Infatuation
- Effect: If your Pokémon is infatuated with an opponent of the opposite gender, there's a 50% chance it will be "immobilized by love" and unable to attack. This condition lasts as long as the infatuated Pokémon and the infatuating Pokémon are both in battle.
- Infliction: The move Attract is the sole cause of infatuation.
- Cure:
- Full Heal / Full Restore / Heal Powder: (See Poison section for details).
- Mental Herb: A held item that cures infatuation and other hindering effects once. Found in specific locations or as a rare item.
- Switching out: Swapping your Pokémon will temporarily remove the infatuation, but it will return if the same Pokémon re-enters against the infatuating opponent.
- Defeating the infatuating Pokémon: Once the opponent that caused infatuation is knocked out, the condition is removed.
- Strategy: Infatuation is gender-specific. If you're having trouble with Attract, consider using Pokémon of the same gender or genderless Pokémon against opponents known to use it.
Important Notes on Status Conditions
- Ability Immunity: Some Pokémon abilities grant immunity to specific status conditions (e.g., Immunity prevents Poison, Limber prevents Paralysis). Pay attention to your Pokémon's abilities!
- Held Items: Berries are invaluable for automatic status recovery. Keep a variety stocked and consider which Pokémon would benefit most from holding them.
- Move Effects: Certain moves can also cure status conditions (e.g., Refresh, Heal Bell). Consider teaching these to support Pokémon.
- Status-Inducing Moves: While annoying when inflicted upon you, status moves are powerful tools for your own team. Consider teaching moves like Thunder Wave or Toxic to your Pokémon to gain an advantage in battle.
