Berry Growing and Blending
Beyond their use in battle and healing, Berries in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl offer a rich sub-system for creating Poffins, which are essential for enhancing your Pokémon's Contest stats. Mastering Berry growing and blending will give you a significant edge in the Super Contests.
I. Berry Growing: From Seed to Harvest
Growing Berries is a straightforward process that requires patience and regular attention. You can plant Berries in various soft soil patches found throughout Sinnoh.
A. Getting Started with Berries
- Obtain Berries: You'll naturally find Berries scattered across the landscape as sparkling items, receive them from NPCs, or get them as rewards. Early on, you'll encounter common Berries like Oran Berry and Pecha Berry.
- Locate Berry Patches: These are distinctive square patches of dark soil. Key locations include:
- Route 205 (South): Near the Honey Trees.
- Floaroma Town: A large patch in the center.
- Route 206: South of the Cycling Road.
- Hearthome City: Next to the Pokémon Contest Hall.
- Solaceon Town: East of the Pokémon Day Care.
- Pastoria City: Several patches near the Great Marsh entrance.
- Planting: Approach a Berry patch, open your Bag, select a Berry, and choose "Plant." You can plant one Berry per patch.
B. Nurturing Your Berry Plants
Once planted, Berries require care to maximize their yield. The growth cycle is real-time, even when your DS is off.
- Watering: Use the Sprinklotad (obtained from a girl in the flower shop in Floaroma Town) on your planted Berries. Watering prevents the soil from drying out, which can reduce the number of Berries harvested. Water once per growth stage, or whenever the soil appears dry (a lighter brown color).
- Growth Stages: Berries typically go through four stages:
- Seedling
- Sprout
- Flowering
- Fruiting
- Harvesting: Once the plant reaches the Fruiting stage, interact with it to collect your Berries. Each plant will yield multiple Berries (typically 2-5, depending on the Berry type and how well it was cared for).
II. Berry Blending: Crafting Poffins
Poffins are special treats that permanently raise a Pokémon's Contest stats (Cool, Beauty, Cute, Smart, Tough). You create them by blending Berries in the Poffin House.
A. The Poffin House
The Poffin House is located in Hearthome City, just west of the Pokémon Contest Hall. Inside, you'll find a Poffin-making machine.
B. The Blending Process
- Choose Berries: Interact with the Poffin machine. You'll be prompted to select up to four Berries. The types of Berries you choose directly influence the Poffin's flavor and level, which in turn affects the Contest stat it boosts.
- Spicy Berries (e.g., Cheri, Leppa, Figy) boost Coolness.
- Dry Berries (e.g., Chesto, Persim, Wiki) boost Beauty.
- Sweet Berries (e.g., Pecha, Lum, Mago) boost Cuteness.
- Bitter Berries (e.g., Rawst, Sitrus, Aguav) boost Smartness.
- Sour Berries (e.g., Aspear, Pomeg, Iapapa) boost Toughness.
- The Blending Minigame: Once Berries are selected, a stirring minigame begins.
- Stirring: Use the stylus to stir the mixture in a circular motion on the touch screen. The goal is to maintain a steady, moderate speed.
- Speed Control:
- Too Slow: The mixture will burn (indicated by smoke and a red glow), lowering the Poffin's quality.
- Too Fast: The mixture will spill (indicated by splashes), also lowering the Poffin's quality.
- Timer: You have a limited time to blend. The better your stirring, the higher the Poffin's level and smoothness.
- Poffin Results: After the timer runs out, your Poffin is complete.
- Level: A higher level Poffin boosts stats more significantly. This is influenced by the rarity of Berries and your stirring skill.
- Smoothness: A lower smoothness value is better, as it means the Pokémon can eat more Poffins before becoming full. Smoothness is primarily affected by your stirring skill (fewer burns/spills).
C. Using Poffins
To use a Poffin, open your Bag, navigate to the Poffin Case (a key item you receive early on), select a Poffin, and choose "Feed." Select the Pokémon you wish to feed it to. Each Pokémon has a "fullness" meter; once full, it cannot eat any more Poffins until its fullness decreases over time. Strategic Poffin feeding is crucial for maximizing Contest stats.
