  • Geodude (Lv. 12): Rock/Ground type. Weak to Water and Grass.
  • Onix (Lv. 12): Rock/Ground type. Weak to Water and Grass.
  • Cranidos (Lv. 14): Rock type. Weak to Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, and Steel. This is his ace Pokémon.

Strategy: If you chose Turtwig or Piplup, this Gym will be relatively easy. Turtwig's Grass-type moves are super effective against all of Roark's Pokémon, and Piplup's Water-type moves are also highly effective. If you chose Chimchar, you'll need to rely on Fighting-type moves (if it has learned them) or catch a Pokémon like Machop (found in Oreburgh Gate) or Budew (Route 204) to help. Geodude and Onix have high Defense, so special attacks or super-effective physical attacks are best. Cranidos has high Attack but low Defense and Special Defense, making it vulnerable to special attacks. After defeating Roark, you'll receive the Coal Badge, allowing you to use Rock Smash outside of battle, and TM76 (Stealth Rock).
