Legendary Pokémon Locations and Capture

Capturing Sinnoh's legendary Pokémon is a monumental task, but with careful preparation and strategy, you can add these powerful allies to your team. Always save your game before encountering a legendary, and stock up on plenty of Ultra Balls, Timer Balls, and Dusk Balls. Status conditions like Sleep or Paralysis significantly increase capture rates, so bring a Pokémon with moves like Spore, Sleep Powder, or Thunder Wave.

Dialga (Diamond) / Palkia (Pearl)

These majestic Dragon/Steel (Dialga) or Dragon/Water (Palkia) types are central to the Sinnoh region's lore and are unmissable as part of the main story.

  • Location: Spear Pillar, atop Mount Coronet. You will encounter your game's mascot legendary after defeating Team Galactic Boss Cyrus.
  • Requirements: Progress through the main story until you reach the climax at Spear Pillar.
  • Strategy:
    1. Bring a Pokémon that can inflict status conditions (e.g., Roserade with Sleep Powder, Luxray with Thunder Wave).
    2. Lower its HP into the red zone. False Swipe is invaluable for this, as it guarantees not to knock out the Pokémon.
    3. Begin throwing Ultra Balls. If the battle drags on, Timer Balls become more effective after 10 turns. If it's nighttime or in a cave, Dusk Balls are also highly potent.
    4. Be prepared for a long battle; these Pokémon have high HP and can be stubborn.

Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf (The Lake Guardians)

These three Psychic-type Pokémon are found in the caves of Sinnoh's three lakes.

Uxie (Lake Acuity)
  • Location: Acuity Cavern, at the center of Lake Acuity (north of Snowpoint City).
  • Requirements: Defeat Team Galactic at Lake Acuity. You will need Surf and Rock Climb.
  • Strategy: Uxie will be waiting for you. Follow the general legendary capture strategy: inflict status, lower HP, and use Ultra/Timer/Dusk Balls.
Mesprit (Lake Verity - Roaming)
  • Location: Verity Cavern, at the center of Lake Verity (north of Twinleaf Town).
  • Requirements: After interacting with Mesprit in Verity Cavern, it will flee and begin roaming Sinnoh. You will need Surf.
  • Strategy (Roaming):
    1. After Mesprit flees, Professor Rowan will inform you that it's roaming. Use your Pokétch's Marking Map application to track its current location.
    2. Fly to a city near its current route. Mesprit moves between routes when you do.
    3. Encounter Mesprit in the tall grass. It will attempt to flee on the first turn.
    4. To prevent escape, use a Pokémon with the ability Arena Trap (e.g., Trapinch, Dugtrio) or Shadow Tag (e.g., Wobbuffet). Alternatively, use a move like Mean Look, Block, or Spider Web.
    5. Once trapped, inflict a status condition (Paralysis is best as it doesn't wear off) and lower its HP. Its HP and status will remain the same across encounters.
    6. Throw Ultra Balls. This can be a lengthy process due to its roaming nature.
Azelf (Lake Valor)
  • Location: Valor Cavern, at the center of Lake Valor (east of Veilstone City).
  • Requirements: Defeat Team Galactic at Lake Valor. You will need Surf.
  • Strategy: Azelf will be waiting for you. Follow the general legendary capture strategy: inflict status, lower HP, and use Ultra/Timer/Dusk Balls.

Heatran

This unique Fire/Steel type is found deep within Stark Mountain.

  • Location: Stark Mountain, in the Battle Zone.
  • Requirements:
    1. Complete the main story and obtain the National Pokédex.
    2. Travel to the Battle Zone and navigate through Stark Mountain.
    3. After exploring the volcano, speak with Buck, who will take the Magma Stone.
    4. Exit Stark Mountain and then re-enter. Heatran will now be present in the chamber where Buck took the Magma Stone.
  • Strategy: Heatran is a formidable opponent. Bring Water or Ground-type Pokémon for offense, and a dedicated status inducer. Lower its HP, inflict Sleep or Paralysis, and use your best capture balls.

Regigigas

The colossal Normal-type Regigigas awaits in the depths of Snowpoint Temple.

  • Location: Snowpoint Temple, Snowpoint City.
  • Requirements:
    1. Complete the main story and obtain the National Pokédex.
    2. You must have caught Regirock, Regice, and Registeel in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, or traded them into your Diamond/Pearl game. These three must be in your party.
    3. Speak to the Gym Leader Candice in Snowpoint City, who will grant you access to Snowpoint Temple.
  • Strategy: Navigate the icy puzzles of Snowpoint Temple. Regigigas will be at the lowest level. Its ability, Slow Start, halves its Attack and Speed for the first five turns, making it easier to manage initially. Exploit this window to inflict status and lower its HP before it becomes a true powerhouse.

Giratina (Distortion World - Platinum Only) / Turnback Cave (Diamond/Pearl)

The Ghost/Dragon-type Giratina has a different encounter depending on your game version.

  • Location (Diamond/Pearl): Turnback Cave, on Route 214 (requires Surf and Rock Climb).
  • Requirements: Complete the main story and obtain the National Pokédex.
  • Strategy:
    1. Navigate Turnback Cave by entering three specific rooms without backtracking more than a certain number of times. The path is somewhat randomized but generally involves finding rooms with pillars.
    2. Once you reach the final pillar room, Giratina will appear.
    3. As a Ghost/Dragon type, it has few weaknesses. Bring a strong Dark or Ice-type attacker.
    4. Inflict status (Sleep is highly recommended due to its high HP) and chip away at its health. Dusk Balls are excellent here due to the cave environment.

Cresselia

The graceful Psychic-type Cresselia is another roaming legendary.

  • Location: Fullmoon Island (initial encounter), then roams Sinnoh.
  • Requirements:
    1. Complete the main story and obtain the National Pokédex.
    2. Go to Canalave City and speak to the sailor's son in the house near the ferry. He is having nightmares.
    3. Speak to the sailor outside, who will take you to Fullmoon Island.
  • Strategy (Roaming):
    1. On Fullmoon Island, interact with Cresselia, and it will flee, leaving behind a Lunar Wing.
    2. Similar to Mesprit, use your Pokétch's Marking Map to track its location.
    3. Utilize a Pokémon with Mean Look, Block, Spider Web, Arena Trap, or Shadow Tag to prevent its escape.
    4. Inflict a persistent status condition (Paralysis is ideal) and lower its HP across encounters.
    5. Throw Ultra Balls. This can be a patient endeavor.

Darkrai (Event Only)

The elusive Dark-type Darkrai is only available through a special event item.

  • Location: Newmoon Island.
  • Requirements: Obtain the Member Card via a Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection event (no longer active).
  • Strategy: If you managed to get the Member Card, head to Canalave City. Enter the locked house next to the Pokémon Center. Show the Member Card to the man inside, and he will let you sleep, transporting you to Newmoon Island. Darkrai will be waiting. Inflict status, lower HP, and use your best balls.

Shaymin (Event Only)

The adorable Grass-type Shaymin is also an event-exclusive Pokémon.

  • Location: Flower Paradise.
  • Requirements: Obtain the Oak's Letter via a Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection event (no longer active).
  • Strategy: With Oak's Letter, head to Route 224. Professor Oak will appear and ask you to thank someone. A path will open, leading to Flower Paradise. Shaymin will be at the end of this path. Standard capture strategy applies.

Arceus (Event Only)

The mythical Normal-type Arceus, the creator of the Pokémon world, is the rarest of all.

  • Location: Hall of Origin.
  • Requirements: Obtain the Azure Flute via a Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection event (never officially distributed).
  • Strategy: If you somehow possess the Azure Flute, go to Spear Pillar. Playing the flute will summon a staircase to the Hall of Origin, where Arceus awaits. This is arguably the toughest capture in the game. Bring a diverse team, plenty of healing items, and an abundance of Ultra/Timer/Dusk Balls. Arceus is level 80, so be prepared for a long, challenging battle.
