Battle Tower/Frontier
Welcome, aspiring Pokémon Master, to the ultimate challenge beyond the Sinnoh League: the Battle Tower! Located in the Fight Area, accessible after defeating the Elite Four and obtaining the National Dex, the Battle Tower is where trainers test their mettle against a seemingly endless stream of powerful opponents. Unlike standard battles, your Pokémon are automatically set to Level 50 (or Level 100 in certain modes), and you cannot use items from your bag during battle. This section will guide you through the intricacies of the Battle Tower, helping you conquer its challenges and earn valuable Battle Points (BP).
Getting Started: Accessing the Battle Tower
- Defeat the Elite Four: You must first become the Sinnoh Champion.
- Obtain the National Dex: Professor Oak will upgrade your Pokédex after you've seen all 150 Sinnoh Pokémon.
- Travel to the Fight Area:
- Head to the Snowpoint City port.
- Speak to the sailor by the ship to take a ferry to the Fight Area.
- The Battle Tower is the prominent building in the center of the Fight Area.
Battle Tower Mechanics
The Battle Tower offers several battle formats, each with its own rules and challenges. Your goal is to achieve win streaks, earning Battle Points (BP) that can be exchanged for rare items.
- Single Battle: Choose three Pokémon from your party. Standard 3-on-3 battles.
- Double Battle: Choose four Pokémon from your party. Standard 2-on-2 battles.
- Multi Battle: Team up with an NPC partner (or a friend via local wireless) and choose two Pokémon each.
- Wi-Fi Battle: Challenge other players online (requires Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, now defunct for DS).
Important Rules:
- All Pokémon are automatically leveled to 50 (or 100, depending on the challenge). Their stats will adjust accordingly.
- You cannot use items from your bag during battle. Held items are allowed and crucial.
- Certain legendary Pokémon (e.g., Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Mewtwo, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Rayquaza, Groudon, Kyogre, Arceus, Darkrai, Shaymin, Manaphy, Phione, Jirachi, Celebi, Mew, Deoxys) are banned.
- Duplicate Pokémon and duplicate held items are generally not allowed within your team.
Building a Winning Team: Strategies and Pokémon Recommendations
Success in the Battle Tower hinges on careful team construction, strategic move sets, and effective held items. Here are some general principles and strong contenders:
General Strategies:
- Type Coverage: Ensure your team can effectively hit a wide range of types for super effective damage.
- Stat Distribution: Balance offensive and defensive Pokémon. A purely offensive team can be swept, and a purely defensive one might struggle to finish opponents.
- Synergy: Choose Pokémon whose abilities, moves, and types complement each other. For example, a Pokémon that can set up entry hazards (like Stealth Rock or Spikes) can soften opponents for a powerful sweeper.
- Status Conditions: Don't underestimate the power of moves like Thunder Wave (Paralysis), Will-O-Wisp (Burn), or Sleep Powder (Sleep).
- Setup Sweepers: Pokémon that can boost their stats (e.g., Dragon Dance, Swords Dance, Nasty Plot) can be incredibly potent if given the opportunity.
- Choice Items: Choice Band, Choice Scarf, and Choice Specs are powerful held items that boost a stat but lock you into one move. Use them on Pokémon with diverse move pools.
- Substitute + Protect: A classic stalling and scouting combination.
Recommended Pokémon (Examples):
This is not an exhaustive list, but these Pokémon often perform well due to their stats, typing, and move pools.
- Garchomp (Dragon/Ground): High Attack and Speed. Excellent STAB (Same-Type Attack Bonus) moves like Outrage and Earthquake. Often holds a Choice Scarf or Yache Berry.
- Tyranitar (Rock/Dark): Strong Attack and Special Defense. Its Sand Stream ability summons a sandstorm, boosting its Special Defense and damaging non-Rock/Ground/Steel types. Often holds a Choice Band or Assault Vest (if available in D/P).
- Jolteon (Electric): Blazing Speed and good Special Attack. Thunderbolt, Hidden Power Ice, Baton Pass. Can hold a Choice Specs or Life Orb.
- Starmie (Water/Psychic): Fast and versatile Special Attacker. Surf, Psychic, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt. Often holds a Life Orb or Expert Belt.
- Metagross (Steel/Psychic): High Attack and Defense. Meteor Mash, Earthquake, Bullet Punch. Often holds a Choice Band or Leftovers.
- Scizor (Bug/Steel): Excellent Attack and Defense, with Technician ability boosting weak moves like Bullet Punch. Swords Dance + Bullet Punch is devastating. Often holds a Choice Band or Life Orb.
- Breloom (Grass/Fighting): Spore (100% accuracy Sleep) is incredibly powerful. Mach Punch for priority. Often holds a Focus Sash to guarantee a Spore.
Earning Battle Points (BP) and Rewards
You earn BP for every set of 7 consecutive wins. The amount of BP increases as your win streak grows. You can exchange BP at the counter inside the Battle Tower for various useful items:
- TMs: Rare and powerful Technical Machines like Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Earthquake, Stone Edge, Dragon Claw.
- Held Items: Choice Band, Choice Scarf, Choice Specs, Life Orb, Focus Sash, Expert Belt, Scope Lens, various Berries (e.g., Salac Berry, Petaya Berry).
- Evolutionary Items: Protector, Electirizer, Magmarizer, Reaper Cloth, Dubious Disc (for evolving certain Pokémon).
- Vitamins: HP Up, Protein, Iron, Calcium, Zinc, Carbos (for EV training).
Challenging the Frontier Brain: Palmer
After achieving a significant win streak (usually 21 wins in a row in a specific format), you will eventually face the Battle Tower's Frontier Brain, Palmer, your rival Barry's father. He is a formidable opponent with strong, well-trained Pokémon. Defeating him earns you a Silver Print. Continue your streak, and after another set of wins (usually 49 wins in a row), you'll face him again for the Gold Print, a true mark of Battle Tower mastery.
Palmer's Team (Silver Print - Single Battle Example):
- Rhyperior (Ground/Rock): Often holds Focus Sash. Powerful physical attacker.
- Milotic (Water): Bulky Special Attacker. Can have Flame Orb + Marvel Scale for increased defense.
- Dragonite (Dragon/Flying): Strong all-around, often with Lum Berry to cure status.
Palmer's teams can vary, but he always uses strong, well-balanced Pokémon. Be prepared for a tough fight!
Tips for Long Win Streaks:
- Save Regularly: Save before entering the Battle Tower each time. If you lose, you can reset and try again without losing your progress.
- Know Your Opponents: While trainers are random, the AI often uses common competitive sets. Anticipate common threats and have counters.
- Don't Get Greedy: Sometimes, it's better to switch out a Pokémon to preserve it for a later threat, even if it means taking some damage.
- Practice: The more you play, the better you'll become at predicting the AI and making optimal plays.
- Consider EV Training and IVs: For serious Battle Tower challenges, optimizing your Pokémon's Effort Values (EVs) and Individual Values (IVs) is crucial for maximizing their stats.
The Battle Tower is a test of skill, strategy, and patience. With the right team and a bit of luck, you'll be racking up BP and prints in no time!
