PokéNav & Trainer's Eyes

The PokéNav is an indispensable tool in your journey through the Hoenn region, offering several functions to assist you. Beyond simply navigating, its "Trainer's Eyes" feature is particularly powerful for rematching trainers and gathering crucial information. Mastering the PokéNav will significantly enhance your gameplay experience, allowing for efficient leveling, item acquisition, and even rare Pokémon encounters.

Acquiring the PokéNav

You'll receive the PokéNav early in your adventure:

After delivering the Devon Parts to Captain Stern in Slateport City, you will be approached by Mr. Stone's aide.
The aide will thank you and present you with the PokéNav as a token of appreciation from Mr. Stone.

PokéNav Functions

Once you have the PokéNav, access it from your Bag's Key Items pocket or by assigning it to a quick-access button. It has several key modes:

Hoenn Map: Displays a detailed map of the Hoenn region, showing your current location, towns, routes, and important landmarks. This is essential for navigation.
Pokémon List: Shows a list of all Pokémon you've encountered, along with their cries. This is a basic Pokédex-like function.
Trainer's Eyes: This is arguably the most valuable feature. It allows you to track trainers you've battled and see if they're ready for a rematch.
Ribbons: Displays the Ribbons your Pokémon have earned, typically from Contests.
Condition: Shows the Condition stats (Cool, Beauty, Cute, Smart, Tough) of your Pokémon, relevant for Pokémon Contests.

Mastering Trainer's Eyes for Rematches

The Trainer's Eyes function is your go-to for leveling up your team and earning extra cash. Here's how to use it effectively:

Identifying Rematch Opportunities

When you open the Trainer's Eyes, you'll see a list of trainers you've previously defeated. Pay close attention to the icons next to their names:

Red Exclamation Mark (!): This indicates a trainer is ready for a rematch! Their Pokémon will have leveled up, offering more experience and a greater challenge.
No Icon: The trainer is not currently ready for a rematch. You'll need to move around the map or wait some time for them to become available again.
Poké Ball Icon: You have already battled this trainer, but they are not currently looking for a rematch.

Triggering Rematches

To initiate a rematch with a trainer showing a red exclamation mark:

Select their name from the Trainer's Eyes list.
The PokéNav will show their location on the Hoenn Map.
Travel to that specific route or area.
Walk past the trainer's line of sight. They will often spot you and challenge you to a battle.

Strategies for Efficient Rematching

Regular Checks: Make it a habit to check your Trainer's Eyes frequently, especially after completing a major story event or traversing several routes.
Target Rich Trainers: Some trainers, particularly those with multiple Pokémon or higher-level teams, offer better experience and prize money. Prioritize these for efficient grinding.
Item Farming: Certain trainers might have Pokémon holding valuable items (e.g., Leftovers, rare berries). While not directly shown in Trainer's Eyes, knowing which trainers have specific Pokémon can help you plan for item acquisition using moves like Thief or Covet.
EV Training: For advanced players, rematches are excellent for EV training specific stats, as you can repeatedly battle trainers with Pokémon that yield desired EV points.
Cycling Road Loop: A particularly effective strategy involves trainers on Cycling Road (Route 110). Many trainers here frequently become available for rematches, offering a continuous loop of battles and experience.
