Choosing Your Starter Pokémon

The very first, and arguably most impactful, decision you'll make in your journey through the Hoenn region is selecting your starter Pokémon. Professor Birch will present you with three distinct choices, each offering a unique early-game experience and shaping your team's composition. Your choice also dictates which starter your rival, Brendan or May, will pick, creating a dynamic early rivalry.

The Three Hoenn Starters

Let's break down each starter, their evolutionary lines, and their strategic implications:

1. Treecko (Grass Type)

  • Initial Stage: Treecko (Grass)
  • First Evolution: Grovyle (Grass) - Learns Leaf Blade at Lv. 29 (a powerful physical Grass move).
  • Final Evolution: Sceptile (Grass) - A lightning-fast Special Attacker.
Early Game Performance:
  • Strengths: Treecko boasts excellent Speed and Special Attack. It learns Absorb early, providing some recovery. Its high Speed allows it to outspeed many early-game Pokémon.
  • Weaknesses: Grass-type moves are not super effective against many early trainers. It struggles against Bug, Flying, Poison, Fire, and Ice types. Its defensive stats are low, making it vulnerable to strong attacks.
  • Gym Matchups:
    • Gym 1 (Roxanne - Rock): Treecko is super effective against Roxanne's Rock-type Pokémon, making this gym relatively easy.
    • Gym 2 (Brawly - Fighting): Treecko is neutral against Fighting types. Its low defenses can be a liability here.
    • Gym 3 (Wattson - Electric): Treecko is neutral against Electric types.
    • Gym 4 (Flannery - Fire): Treecko is quadruply weak to Fire-type attacks. This gym will be a significant challenge.
Final Evolution (Sceptile) Analysis:
  • Typing: Pure Grass.
  • Key Stats: Very high Speed and Special Attack.
  • Notable Moves: Leaf Blade (Physical, but still strong), Giga Drain, Dragon Claw (via TM), Focus Blast (via TM).
  • Strategic Role: A fast, hard-hitting special sweeper. Sceptile excels at outspeeding and one-shotting opponents.
Recommended For:

Players who enjoy a fast-paced playstyle, prefer Special Attackers, and are willing to build a diverse team to cover Sceptile's weaknesses, especially against Fire and Ice types. Good for those who want an easier first gym but a harder fourth.

2. Torchic (Fire Type)

  • Initial Stage: Torchic (Fire)
  • First Evolution: Combusken (Fire/Fighting) - Evolves at Lv. 16. This dual-typing is incredibly powerful.
  • Final Evolution: Blaziken (Fire/Fighting) - A formidable mixed attacker with high Attack and Special Attack.
Early Game Performance:
  • Strengths: Torchic has good Attack and Special Attack. Its evolution into Combusken at Lv. 16 grants it the Fighting type, giving it STAB (Same-Type Attack Bonus) on Fighting moves and excellent coverage.
  • Weaknesses: Struggles against Water, Ground, and Rock types. Its Speed is average.
  • Gym Matchups:
    • Gym 1 (Roxanne - Rock): Torchic is quadruply weak to Rock-type attacks. This will be the hardest first gym experience. You'll need to rely on other early-game Pokémon like Lotad or Shroomish, or grind Torchic significantly.
    • Gym 2 (Brawly - Fighting): Combusken (if evolved) is super effective against Fighting types with its Fighting moves, making this gym very easy.
    • Gym 3 (Wattson - Electric): Torchic/Combusken is neutral against Electric types.
    • Gym 4 (Flannery - Fire): Torchic/Combusken is neutral against Fire types.
Final Evolution (Blaziken) Analysis:
  • Typing: Fire/Fighting.
  • Key Stats: High Attack and Special Attack, decent HP.
  • Notable Moves: Blaze Kick, Sky Uppercut, Bulk Up, Flamethrower (via TM), Focus Punch (via TM).
  • Strategic Role: A powerful mixed attacker that can hit hard physically and specially. Its dual typing offers excellent offensive coverage.
Recommended For:

Players who enjoy powerful physical attackers and strategic type coverage. Blaziken is a versatile powerhouse. Be prepared for a challenging first gym, but enjoy a smoother ride through the second. Good for those who want a strong, offensive presence in their team.

3. Mudkip (Water Type)

  • Initial Stage: Mudkip (Water)
  • First Evolution: Marshtomp (Water/Ground) - Evolves at Lv. 16. This unique dual-typing is incredibly advantageous.
  • Final Evolution: Swampert (Water/Ground) - A bulky, powerful physical attacker.
Early Game Performance:
  • Strengths: Mudkip has good Attack and Special Attack, and excellent bulk. Its evolution into Marshtomp at Lv. 16 grants it the Water/Ground typing, which provides an incredible number of resistances and only one weakness.
  • Weaknesses: Pure Water-type early on, so it's weak to Grass and Electric. However, upon evolving into Marshtomp, its only weakness becomes Grass (a crippling 4x weakness).
  • Gym Matchups:
    • Gym 1 (Roxanne - Rock): Mudkip is super effective against Roxanne's Rock-type Pokémon, making this gym very easy.
    • Gym 2 (Brawly - Fighting): Mudkip/Marshtomp is neutral against Fighting types. Its bulk helps it endure hits.
    • Gym 3 (Wattson - Electric): Marshtomp (if evolved) is immune to Electric-type attacks due to its Ground typing, trivializing this gym.
    • Gym 4 (Flannery - Fire): Mudkip/Marshtomp is super effective against Fire types, making this gym very easy.
Final Evolution (Swampert) Analysis:
  • Typing: Water/Ground.
  • Key Stats: High HP, Attack, and Special Defense. Good Special Attack.
  • Notable Moves: Earthquake (via TM), Surf, Ice Beam (via TM), Hammer Arm (via Move Tutor).
  • Strategic Role: A bulky physical attacker with excellent defensive typing. Swampert can take hits and dish out powerful STAB attacks. Its only weakness is Grass (4x), which must be carefully managed.
Recommended For:

Players who want an "easy mode" for the early game. Mudkip/Marshtomp/Swampert trivializes the first, third, and fourth gyms. Its unique Water/Ground typing makes it incredibly resilient. Ideal for beginners or those who want a smooth journey through the first half of the game. Just be mindful of Grass-type opponents!

The Rival's Choice

Your rival, Brendan or May, will always choose the starter that has a type advantage over yours:

  • If you choose Treecko, your rival will choose Torchic.
  • If you choose Torchic, your rival will choose Mudkip.
  • If you choose Mudkip, your rival will choose Treecko.

This ensures that your early rival battles will always present a type disadvantage for you, adding a layer of challenge and encouraging you to build a balanced team.

Final Recommendation

There is no "wrong" choice, as all three starters are viable and can lead you to victory. However, if you're looking for the smoothest early-game experience, Mudkip is often considered the easiest due to its advantageous typing against multiple early gym leaders. If you enjoy a challenge and a powerful late-game mixed attacker, Torchic is an excellent choice. If speed and special attacking are your preference, and you're prepared to cover its weaknesses, Treecko will serve you well.

Ultimately, choose the Pokémon that appeals most to you! Your journey through Hoenn will be filled with many other Pokémon to catch and train, allowing you to build a team that complements your starter's strengths and weaknesses.
