Move Tutors
Move Tutors are special NPCs scattered throughout the Hoenn region who can teach your Pokémon specific moves. Unlike TMs, these moves are often unique, powerful, or otherwise unavailable through leveling up or standard TM acquisition. Some tutors offer their services for free, while others require a payment in Battle Points (BP) earned at the Battle Frontier. Understanding where and when to find these tutors can significantly enhance your team's capabilities.
Free Move Tutors
These tutors offer their services without any cost, but usually only once per Pokémon. Choose wisely!
-
Starter Pledge Moves (Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, Hydro Cannon)
After you have defeated the Elite Four and become the Champion, return to Professor Birch's lab in Littleroot Town. Speak to him with your fully evolved Kanto or Hoenn starter Pokémon (Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Sceptile, Blaziken, Swampert) in your party, and he will offer to teach them their respective ultimate elemental move. This is a powerful attack, but it requires a turn to recharge after use.
-
Draco Meteor
Located in the Dragon-type Gym in Sootopolis City, the Dragon Master (Drake from the Elite Four) can teach the move Draco Meteor to any Dragon-type Pokémon. This move boasts immense power but sharply lowers the user's Special Attack after use. You must have defeated the Elite Four to access this tutor.
-
Ultimate Elemental Moves (Grass Pledge, Fire Pledge, Water Pledge)
Similar to the starter pledge moves, these are taught by an old man in Pacifidlog Town. He can teach Grass Pledge, Fire Pledge, or Water Pledge to any fully evolved starter Pokémon from any region. This is particularly useful for Pokémon obtained through trading. This tutor becomes available after you've become the Champion.
Battle Frontier Move Tutors
These tutors are found exclusively within the Battle Frontier and require Battle Points (BP) as payment. BP is earned by winning battles in the various Battle Frontier facilities. Each move has a specific BP cost, and you can teach these moves multiple times to different Pokémon as long as you have the BP.
To reach the Battle Frontier, you must first defeat the Elite Four. Then, head to Lilycove City and speak to Mr. Briney, who will ferry you there. The Move Tutors are located in various tents and buildings throughout the Battle Frontier complex.
Battle Frontier Tutor Locations & Moves
There are several buildings within the Battle Frontier that house Move Tutors. Here's a breakdown:
-
Battle Park (North-East Building)
Inside the building to the northeast of the Battle Park entrance, you'll find a tutor offering several useful moves:
- Seismic Toss: A reliable fighting-type move that deals damage equal to the user's level. (BP Cost: 24 BP)
- Dream Eater: A powerful Psychic-type move that only works on sleeping targets, restoring half the damage dealt as HP. (BP Cost: 24 BP)
- Mega Punch: A standard Normal-type physical attack. (BP Cost: 24 BP)
- Mega Kick: A stronger, but less accurate, Normal-type physical attack. (BP Cost: 48 BP)
-
Battle Dome (South-East Building)
In the building to the southeast of the Battle Dome, another tutor awaits:
- Rock Slide: A strong Rock-type physical attack with a chance to make the target flinch. (BP Cost: 48 BP)
- Swords Dance: A status move that sharply raises the user's Attack stat. (BP Cost: 48 BP)
- Substitute: Creates a substitute using 1/4 of the user's max HP, protecting them from damage and status. (BP Cost: 48 BP)
- Body Slam: A Normal-type physical attack with a chance to paralyze the target. (BP Cost: 24 BP)
-
Battle Pike (North-West Building)
The building to the northwest of the Battle Pike entrance houses a tutor specializing in elemental punches:
- Thunder Punch: An Electric-type physical attack with a chance to paralyze. (BP Cost: 24 BP)
- Fire Punch: A Fire-type physical attack with a chance to burn. (BP Cost: 24 BP)
- Ice Punch: An Ice-type physical attack with a chance to freeze. (BP Cost: 24 BP)
- Dynamic Punch: A powerful Fighting-type physical attack that always confuses the target, but has low accuracy. (BP Cost: 48 BP)
-
Battle Arena (South-West Building)
Finally, the building to the southwest of the Battle Arena offers these moves:
- Explosion: A devastating Normal-type physical attack that causes the user to faint. (BP Cost: 48 BP)
- Self-Destruct: Similar to Explosion, but slightly weaker. (BP Cost: 24 BP)
- Defense Curl: A status move that raises the user's Defense. (BP Cost: 24 BP)
- Rollout: A Rock-type physical attack that hits for 5 turns, increasing in power each consecutive hit. (BP Cost: 24 BP)
Strategy Tip: Prioritize earning BP by challenging the Battle Factory or Battle Palace if you're new to the Battle Frontier, as they often require less strategic planning than other facilities. Save up your BP for moves that complement your team's weaknesses or enhance their strengths, especially for competitive play or challenging the Frontier Brains.
