Secret Shores & Diving Spots

The vast oceans of Hoenn hide more than just Tentacool and Wingull! With the right Hidden Machines (HMs), you can unlock hidden paths, discover rare items, and even encounter legendary Pokémon. This section will guide you through the most significant secret shores and diving spots in Pokémon Emerald.

Prerequisites for Exploration

Before you embark on your underwater adventures, ensure your team has the following HMs:

  • HM03 Surf: Essential for traversing water routes. Obtained after defeating Wattson in Mauville City.
  • HM08 Dive: Crucial for exploring underwater areas. Acquired from Steven Stone in Mossdeep City after defeating Tate & Liza.
  • HM07 Waterfall (Optional but Recommended): Needed to access certain areas, particularly around Ever Grande City. Obtained in Cave of Origin after defeating Kyogre/Groudon.

Remember to teach these HMs to Pokémon capable of learning them. Water-type Pokémon are often ideal candidates.

Key Diving Locations & Discoveries

Route 124 & 126: Treasure Troves and Secret Bases

These routes are your primary playgrounds for underwater exploration. The seafloor here is dotted with dark patches, indicating dive spots.

  • Underwater Patches: Dive into any dark patch you see. These often contain hidden items like Heart Scales (useful for the Move Relearner in Fallarbor Town), Big Pearls, and Star Pieces, which can be sold for a good profit.
  • Secret Base Spots: Many underwater areas on these routes also feature unique Secret Base locations. Look for small, distinct rock formations or clearings on the seafloor. These offer a cool, secluded spot to set up your base.
  • Wild Pokémon: While diving, you'll primarily encounter Pokémon like Clamperl, Chinchou, and Relicanth. Relicanth is particularly important for solving the Regi puzzle!

Sealed Chamber (Route 134)

This is arguably the most significant diving spot in the game, leading to the legendary Regi trio.

  1. Locating the Chamber: From Pacifidlog Town, Surf west on Route 134. You'll notice a strong current. Navigate carefully until you spot a dark patch of water that allows you to Dive.
  2. Underwater Passage: Dive down. You'll find yourself in an underwater cave. Follow the path until you reach a large stone slab with Braille inscriptions.
  3. Activating the Chamber:
    • At the first Braille inscription, use HM08 Dive again to surface inside the Sealed Chamber.
    • Once inside, walk to the northernmost wall and use Dig (TM28). This will open a new passage.
    • Proceed through the newly opened passage. At the next Braille inscription, place a Relicanth in the first slot of your party and a Wailord in the last slot of your party. Read the inscription again.
    • If done correctly, you'll hear a rumble, signifying that the caves for Regirock, Regice, and Registeel have opened!

S.S. Tidal Wreckage (Route 108)

While not a diving spot in the traditional sense, the S.S. Tidal's wreckage on Route 108 requires Surf and offers unique exploration.

  • Accessing the Wreck: Surf south from Slateport City or north from Mauville City until you reach Route 108. The S.S. Tidal will be clearly visible.
  • Inside the Ship: Navigate the various rooms of the ship. You'll find trainers, items like Leftovers, and potentially encounter wild Pokémon. Some areas may require specific key items (like the Scanner, which you can trade for a DeepSeaTooth or DeepSeaScale in Slateport City) to fully explore.

Sootopolis City Entrance

The main entrance to Sootopolis City is a massive crater that requires a specific approach.

  1. Finding the Dive Spot: From Route 126, Surf towards the center of the large circular island. You'll see a deep blue patch of water. This is your cue to Dive.
  2. Underwater Passage: Dive down and navigate the underwater cavern. This path will lead you directly into the heart of Sootopolis City.

Tips for Underwater Exploration

  • Repels: Use Max Repels or Super Repels to avoid unwanted wild Pokémon encounters, especially if you're focused on item hunting or reaching a specific destination.
  • Escape Rope: Always carry an Escape Rope. While most underwater caves have a clear exit, it's a good safety net if you get disoriented.
  • Pokémon with Flash: While not directly used underwater, having a Pokémon with Flash can be helpful for navigating the dark interiors of certain caves after surfacing from a dive.
  • Itemfinder: The Itemfinder can be used on the seafloor to pinpoint hidden items that aren't immediately visible.

Exploring the secret shores and diving spots of Hoenn is a rewarding experience, offering valuable items, challenging puzzles, and legendary encounters. Happy diving, trainer!
