Sootopolis City & Cave of Origin

The escalating weather crisis, triggered by the awakening of the Legendary Pokémon Groudon and Kyogre, demands your immediate attention. Your next destination is the isolated Sootopolis City, a unique settlement nestled within a massive, water-filled crater. To reach it, you'll likely need a Pokémon capable of using Surf.

Navigating Sootopolis City

Upon entering Sootopolis City, you'll witness the gravity of the situation firsthand. The city is in turmoil, and the Gym Leader, Wallace, along with the Elite Four member Steven Stone, are desperately trying to find a solution to the rampaging weather. They recognize your potential and will enlist your help.

Key NPCs & Interactions:

  • Wallace: The current Gym Leader of Sootopolis, a master of Water-type Pokémon. He will guide you through the initial steps of resolving the crisis.
  • Steven Stone: The former Champion of Hoenn and a Steel-type specialist. He provides crucial information and support.

Important Locations & Items:

  • Pokémon Center: Essential for healing your team before the challenging events ahead.
  • Poké Mart: Stock up on Potions, Revives, and other crucial battle items.
  • Sootopolis Gym: While you can't challenge it yet, remember its location for later.

The Crisis and the Cave of Origin

Steven and Wallace will explain that the clash between Groudon and Kyogre is causing the extreme weather. They believe the key to stopping their rampage lies within the Cave of Origin, a mysterious cavern located beneath Sootopolis City. Your mission is to enter this cave and find a way to quell the Legendary Pokémon.

Accessing the Cave of Origin:

  1. Speak with Steven Stone and Wallace in Sootopolis City. They will direct you to the Cave of Origin.
  2. The entrance to the Cave of Origin is located in the northern part of Sootopolis City, accessible by surfing.

Inside the Cave of Origin

The Cave of Origin is not a typical dungeon; it's a pivotal story location. There are no wild Pokémon encounters here, but navigating it requires specific Hidden Machines (HMs) and a keen eye.

Required HMs:

  • Flash: Essential for illuminating the dark interior of the cave. Without it, visibility is severely limited.
  • Strength: Needed to move large boulders blocking your path.
  • Rock Smash: Used to break smaller rocks that may impede progress.

Navigation Steps:

  1. Upon entering, use Flash immediately.
  2. Follow the winding path. You'll encounter several boulders that require Strength to push. Pay attention to the directional arrows on the ground, which indicate where boulders can be moved.
  3. Break any smaller rocks with Rock Smash if they block your way.
  4. The cave's layout is relatively linear but can be confusing in the dark. Keep moving downwards.
  5. Eventually, you will reach the lowest chamber where the Legendary Pokémon are clashing.

The Confrontation: Groudon and Kyogre

At the heart of the Cave of Origin, you will witness the epic struggle between Groudon and Kyogre. This is a cinematic event, not a battle where you catch them. The sheer power of their clash is what's causing the extreme weather across Hoenn.

Important Story Point:

  • Unlike previous Pokémon games where you might confront and catch the main legendary in such a location, in Pokémon Emerald, Groudon and Kyogre cannot be caught here. Their battle is purely a story event.
  • This is also where Rayquaza makes its dramatic appearance. Rayquaza descends from the sky to intervene in the battle between Groudon and Kyogre, forcing them to cease their conflict and return to their slumber.
  • Rayquaza is NOT catchable in the Cave of Origin. Its role here is to resolve the weather crisis. You will have the opportunity to encounter and catch Rayquaza much later in the game, specifically at the Sky Pillar, after you have defeated the Elite Four and become the Champion.

After Rayquaza's intervention, the extreme weather conditions will subside, and peace will return to Hoenn. You will then be able to leave the Cave of Origin and continue your journey.

Post-Crisis Sootopolis City

With the crisis averted, Sootopolis City will return to normal. Now, you can finally challenge the Sootopolis Gym and earn your eighth badge!

Sootopolis Gym Challenge:

  • Gym Leader: Juan (Wallace takes over as Champion).
  • Type Specialization: Water.
  • Recommended Pokémon Types: Electric and Grass-types are highly effective.
  • Gym Puzzle: The Sootopolis Gym features an ice-sliding puzzle. You must step on every ice tile on a floor without falling through to the lower level. The path resets if you fall.
  • Reward: Rain Badge, TM03 (Water Pulse).
