Money Making Guide
Welcome, aspiring Pokémon Trainer! In the world of Hoenn, money is essential for buying Poké Balls, Potions, TMs, and other vital supplies. This detailed guide will equip you with the best strategies to amass a fortune in Pokémon Emerald.
Early Game Riches (Before Elite Four)
Before you conquer the Elite Four, your options for significant income are somewhat limited, but still crucial for your journey.
Trainer Battles & Rematches
The most straightforward way to earn money early on is by battling trainers. Every trainer you defeat rewards you with prize money. However, the real gold mine lies in rematches.
- Trainer's Eye/Match Call: Once you obtain the Trainer's Eye (or the upgraded Match Call function on your PokéNav), certain trainers you've already defeated will occasionally want a rematch. Their Pokémon will be stronger, and they'll offer more prize money.
- Strategy: Regularly check your PokéNav for trainers with a red exclamation mark (!). These indicate a trainer ready for a rematch. Focus on trainers who offer higher payouts or are conveniently located near a Pokémon Center.
- Key Item: Amulet Coin: This invaluable item doubles the prize money you receive from battles. You can obtain the Amulet Coin from your Mom in Littleroot Town after defeating your father, Norman, at the Petalburg Gym. Always have a Pokémon holding the Amulet Coin in your party during trainer battles for maximum profit!
Selling Valuables
Keep an eye out for items that serve no purpose other than being sold for a good price.
- Nugget: Found in various locations (e.g., Route 112, Rusturf Tunnel after using Rock Smash, Mirage Tower). Sells for 5,000 PokéDollars.
- Big Pearl: Less common than Nuggets, but also sells for a decent sum.
- Stardust: A common valuable item, often found by using the Itemfinder or as hidden items.
- Strategy: Don't hoard these items! Sell them as soon as you find them to fund your immediate needs.
Post-Game Prosperity (After Elite Four)
Once you've become the Champion, the true money-making opportunities open up, allowing you to buy anything your heart desires.
Roulette Table at Mauville Game Corner
This is arguably the most consistent and effortless way to earn a massive amount of coins, which can then be exchanged for valuable items to sell.
- Location: Mauville City Game Corner. Head to the right-hand roulette table.
- Strategy:
- Initial Investment: You'll need some initial coins. You can buy them directly at the Game Corner or win them through other means.
- Betting Pattern: Place a 3-coin bet on six different numbers. Since there are 12 numbers on the table, this gives you a 50% chance of hitting a jackpot (36 coins).
- Automated Grinding: The key to this method is its semi-AFK nature. Position your character in front of the roulette table and simply mash the 'A' button repeatedly. Many players find it helpful to engage in another activity (like reading a book) while doing this.
- Profit Mechanism: While each individual roll is independent, the probability dictates that over time, you will consistently win more than you lose. For every two sessions where you don't hit the jackpot (losing 18 coins), one jackpot win (36 coins) will cover those losses and provide profit.
- Patience is Key: This method requires patience, but the returns are substantial. You can accumulate thousands of coins this way.
- Converting Coins to Cash: Once you have a significant number of coins, exchange them for prizes at the prize counter. The best items to sell for profit are:
- TM29 (Psychic): Costs 3,500 coins, sells for 2,500 PokéDollars.
- TM10 (Hidden Power): Costs 3,500 coins, sells for 2,500 PokéDollars.
- Rare Candy: Costs 20,000 coins, sells for 4,900 PokéDollars. (While Rare Candies sell for less per coin than TMs, they are excellent for leveling up your Pokémon quickly if you need to train for the Battle Frontier or rematches.)
Elite Four Rematches
After you've defeated the Elite Four and become the Champion, you can challenge them again. Their Pokémon will be stronger, and the prize money will be significantly higher. This is a great way to earn money while also training your Pokémon.
- Strategy: Equip a Pokémon with the Amulet Coin and challenge the Elite Four. This is a more active money-making method compared to the roulette, but it also provides valuable experience for your team.
Battle Frontier (Indirectly)
While the Battle Frontier itself doesn't directly award money, the Battle Points (BP) you earn can be exchanged for valuable items that can be sold for profit, similar to the Game Corner. However, this is generally less efficient for pure money-making than the roulette due to the skill and time investment required for BP.
- Strategy: If you enjoy the challenge of the Battle Frontier, you can convert excess BP into items like Protein, Iron, Carbos, Calcium, Zinc, and HP Up, which sell for 4,900 PokéDollars each.
