Rival Battles & Strategies
Your journey through the Hoenn region will be punctuated by several encounters with your rival, Brendan or May. These battles are excellent opportunities to test your team's strength and strategy. Coming prepared with the right items and a solid plan will ensure your victory.
General Rival Battle Tips
- Type Advantage is Key: Your rival will always choose the starter Pokémon with a type advantage against yours. Plan accordingly by having a Pokémon that can counter their starter.
- Status Conditions: Don't underestimate the power of status effects like Paralysis, Sleep, or Poison. They can turn the tide of a battle, especially against stronger Pokémon.
- Healing Items: Always stock up on Potions, Super Potions, and Antidotes. You can purchase these at any Poké Mart. For early battles, a few Oran Berries or Pecha Berries (found on various routes, like Route 102 or Route 104) can also be incredibly useful for quick in-battle healing.
- Level Up: While not always necessary to over-level, ensuring your Pokémon are at least on par with, or slightly above, your rival's highest-level Pokémon will make battles significantly easier.
Rival Battle 1: Route 103
This is your very first rival encounter after Professor Birch gives you your starter Pokémon. You'll find your rival on Route 103, north of Oldale Town, after delivering the Poké Ball to Professor Birch.
Rival's Team:
- If you chose Treecko: Torchic (Fire, Lv. 5)
- If you chose Torchic: Mudkip (Water, Lv. 5)
- If you chose Mudkip: Treecko (Grass, Lv. 5)
Strategy:
- Against Torchic: Use Water-type moves (if you chose Mudkip) or Rock-type moves (if you caught a Geodude in Granite Cave later, though not applicable for this first battle). If you have Treecko, rely on physical attacks like Pound or Quick Attack and try to outspeed.
- Against Mudkip: Grass-type moves are super effective (if you chose Treecko). If you have Torchic, use physical attacks and try to burn it with Ember if you learn it early.
- Against Treecko: Fire-type moves are ideal (if you chose Torchic). If you have Mudkip, use Water-type moves like Water Gun.
- General: This battle is straightforward. Focus on exploiting type advantages. If your starter is struggling, use a Potion.
Rival Battle 2: Petalburg Woods Entrance
After delivering the Devon Goods to Rustboro City and helping Mr. Briney, you'll encounter your rival just outside Petalburg Woods on Route 104, heading towards Rustboro City.
Rival's Team (Levels will vary slightly based on your progress):
- Starter Pokémon: Lv. 12-14 (Type advantageous to yours)
- Wingull: Lv. 10-12 (Water/Flying)
Strategy:
- Against Rival's Starter: By now, you should have a more diverse team. Consider catching a Pokémon that has a type advantage against your rival's starter. For example, if they have Torchic, a Lotad (found on Route 102 or Route 104) or a Ralts (found on Route 102) with Confusion could be helpful.
- Against Wingull: Electric-type moves (like those from a Magnemite caught in New Mauville later, or a Manectric if you evolved an Electrike from Route 110) are 4x effective. Rock-type moves are also super effective. If you don't have these, strong physical attackers can work. Be wary of its Wing Attack.
- Preparation: Before this battle, ensure your team is around Level 12-15. Having a few Super Potions from Rustboro City's Poké Mart is highly recommended.
Rival Battle 3: Mauville City
You'll face your rival again in Mauville City after defeating Wattson at the Mauville Gym. They'll challenge you near the bike shop.
Rival's Team:
- Starter Pokémon: Lv. 18-20
- Wingull: Lv. 16-18
- Shroomish: Lv. 16-18 (Grass)
Strategy:
- Against Rival's Starter: Continue to use your type-advantageous Pokémon. If your starter is a Fire-type, a Water-type like Marill (found on Route 117) or a Grass-type like Roselia (found on Route 117) would be beneficial.
- Against Wingull: Electric-types are still your best bet. If you caught an Electrike on Route 110, it will shine here.
- Against Shroomish: Fire, Flying, Ice, and Poison-type moves are super effective. A Slugma (Fiery Path) or a Swellow (evolved from Taillow) would be excellent choices. Watch out for its Stun Spore, which can paralyze your Pokémon. Have some Paralyze Heals on hand, purchasable at any Poké Mart.
- Recommended Levels: Aim for your team to be around Level 18-22.
Rival Battle 4: Route 119
This battle occurs on Route 119, right before the Weather Institute. Your rival will challenge you as you cross the long bridge.
Rival's Team:
- Starter Pokémon: Lv. 29-31
- Wingull/Pelipper: Lv. 28-30 (Wingull may have evolved into Pelipper)
- Shroomish/Breloom: Lv. 28-30 (Shroomish may have evolved into Breloom)
- Numel/Camerupt: Lv. 28-30 (Fire/Ground) - If you chose Treecko or Mudkip
- Cacnea/Cacturne: Lv. 28-30 (Grass/Dark) - If you chose Torchic
Strategy:
- Against Rival's Starter: Your starter should be fully evolved by now. Use your strongest counter.
- Against Pelipper: Electric-types are still the best. A Manectric or Magneton (if you traded) will dominate.
- Against Breloom: Flying, Fire, Psychic, and Ice-type moves are super effective. Be wary of its Mach Punch and Spore (if it still has it), which can put your Pokémon to sleep. Have Awakenings ready.
- Against Camerupt: Water-type moves are 4x effective. Ground-type moves are also strong.
- Against Cacturne: Fire, Flying, Poison, Ice, and Fighting-type moves are super effective.
- Preparation: This is a significant battle. Ensure your team is around Level 30-35. Stock up on Hyper Potions and Full Heals from Fortree City's Poké Mart. Consider teaching your Pokémon powerful TMs you've acquired.
Rival Battle 5: Lilycove City Department Store
You'll find your rival on the top floor of the Lilycove City Department Store. This is a good opportunity to stock up on battle items before the fight.
Rival's Team:
- Starter Pokémon: Lv. 36-38
- Pelipper: Lv. 35-37
- Breloom: Lv. 35-37
- Camerupt/Cacturne: Lv. 35-37 (Depending on your starter)
- Swellow: Lv. 35-37 (Normal/Flying)
Strategy:
- Against Swellow: Electric, Ice, and Rock-type moves are super effective. This Pokémon is fast and can hit hard with Aerial Ace.
- General: By this point, your team should be well-rounded. Focus on exploiting weaknesses and using your strongest attacks. Don't hesitate to use X Attacks or X Defenses if you're struggling.
- Recommended Levels: Your team should be around Level 38-42.
Rival Battle 6: Victory Road
Your final rival battle before the Elite Four takes place within Victory Road, near the exit to Ever Grande City. This is their strongest team yet.
Rival's Team:
- Starter Pokémon: Lv. 45-47
- Pelipper: Lv. 44-46
- Breloom: Lv. 44-46
- Camerupt/Cacturne: Lv. 44-46
- Swellow: Lv. 44-46
- Magneton: Lv. 44-46 (Electric/Steel) - If you chose Treecko or Mudkip
- Ludicolo: Lv. 44-46 (Water/Grass) - If you chose Torchic
Strategy:
- Against Magneton: Ground-type moves are 4x effective. Fire and Fighting-type moves are also strong.
- Against Ludicolo: Flying, Poison, and Bug-type moves are super effective. Grass-type moves are resisted.
- General: This battle is a true test of your team's strength. Ensure all your Pokémon are fully healed and have strong movesets. Consider using Full Restores and Revives if needed. This is your last chance to prepare before the Elite Four, so treat it as such.
- Recommended Levels: Your team should be at least Level 45-50.
