Rock Tunnel & Lavender Town

Welcome, aspiring Pokémon Master! Your journey through Kanto continues as you venture into the foreboding darkness of Rock Tunnel, a significant milestone that tests your preparedness and resourcefulness. This guide will illuminate your path, ensuring you navigate its depths, collect valuable items, and emerge victorious on the other side, ready to explore the eerie Lavender Town.

Navigating Rock Tunnel: A Light in the Dark

Rock Tunnel is a multi-level cave system notorious for its pitch-black interior. Before even thinking about entering, you absolutely MUST have a Pokémon that knows the HM05 Flash technique. If you don't, you'll be stumbling in the dark, making navigation incredibly difficult and frustrating. Flash can be taught to many Electric-type Pokémon (like Pikachu, if you caught one in Viridian Forest) or even some Normal-types. If you haven't obtained Flash yet, you can get it from Professor Oak's Aide on Route 2 after catching 10 different Pokémon.

The tunnel itself is a maze of interconnected paths, but with Flash activated, you'll be able to see clearly. Be prepared for a gauntlet of trainers and wild Pokémon encounters. Your Pokémon should be around Level 18-22 to comfortably handle the challenges within.

Wild Pokémon Encounters (Rock Tunnel)

Rock Tunnel is home to several Rock, Ground, and Flying-type Pokémon. Having a Water or Grass-type Pokémon in your party will be incredibly beneficial for these encounters.

  • Geodude (Common): Pure Rock-type. Weak to Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, Steel.
  • Onix (Uncommon): Rock/Ground-type. Extremely weak to Water and Grass (4x damage), also weak to Fighting, Ground, Steel, Ice.
  • Zubat (Very Common): Poison/Flying-type. Weak to Electric, Ice, Psychic, Rock. Resistant to Fighting, Poison, Bug, Grass.
  • Machop (Rare): Fighting-type. Weak to Flying, Psychic. Resistant to Rock, Bug, Dark. A great catch for its strong attack stat.
Trainers of Rock Tunnel

Rock Tunnel is teeming with trainers, providing ample experience for your team. There are a total of 16 trainers spread across its two main floors. battle them all for maximum experience and prize money. Most trainers here specialize in Rock and Ground-type Pokémon, so keep your Water and Grass-type attackers ready.

  • Hiker (x8): Often use Geodude, Onix, Machop.
  • Picnicker (x4): May use Bellsprout, Oddish, Pidgey, Meowth.
  • Camper (x4): Similar to Picnickers, often use Rattata, Sandshrew, Mankey.
Key Items & Navigation Tips (Rock Tunnel)

While navigating, keep an eye out for hidden items. The tunnel isn't just a path; it's a treasure trove!

  • TM01 (Mega Punch): Located on the 1F, near the entrance from Route 10. This is a powerful Normal-type move that can be taught to many Pokémon.
  • Escape Rope: Found on B1F. Always useful for a quick exit from a dungeon if your team is low on health or PP.
  • Repel: Found on 1F. Helps reduce wild Pokémon encounters.
  • X Accuracy: Found on B1F. Temporarily boosts a Pokémon's accuracy in battle.
  • Poké Ball: Found on 1F. Always good to have extra.

Navigation Strategy: The tunnel is essentially a two-floor dungeon. You enter on 1F, descend to B1F, and then ascend back to 1F to exit.

  1. Upon entering from Route 10 (Cerulean City side), activate Flash.
  2. Explore the initial 1F area thoroughly, battling trainers and picking up items like TM01 (Mega Punch).
  3. Find the ladder leading down to B1F.
  4. On B1F, navigate through the winding paths, battling more trainers and collecting items like the Escape Rope.
  5. Locate the ladder that leads back up to 1F. This ladder is usually in the opposite corner or side from where you descended.
  6. Once back on 1F (the exit side), it's a relatively straightforward path to the exit leading to Route 10 (Lavender Town side).
Remember to save frequently, especially after difficult battles or finding valuable items!

Emerging onto Route 10 & Arrival in Lavender Town

After successfully navigating the dark depths of Rock Tunnel, you'll emerge onto the southern part of Route 10. The fresh air will be a welcome change! Follow the path south, and you'll quickly arrive at Lavender Town.

Route 10 (Southern Section)

This small section of Route 10 doesn't have many trainers or items, but it serves as a bridge to Lavender Town. You might encounter a few more wild Pokémon here, similar to those found in Rock Tunnel, but also some common Normal/Flying types like Pidgey and Spearow.

Welcome to Lavender Town

Lavender Town is a small, quiet town with a distinct, somber atmosphere. It's famous (or infamous) for its Pokémon Tower, a massive graveyard for deceased Pokémon. However, you won't be able to fully explore the tower just yet, as your path will be blocked by a ghost that your Silph Scope (which you don't have yet) can't identify.

Upon entering Lavender Town:

  • Pokémon Center: Heal your weary Pokémon immediately after the arduous journey through Rock Tunnel.
  • Poké Mart: Stock up on any necessary items like Potions, Poké Balls, or status-healing items.
  • Name Rater's House: To the west of the Pokémon Center. Here, an old man will allow you to change the nicknames of any Pokémon you caught yourself.
  • Mr. Fuji's House: In the northwest corner of town. He's a kind old man, but he's currently missing.
  • Pokémon Tower: The most prominent building. You'll encounter your Rival here, and then be blocked by a mysterious presence. You'll need to return later with a special item to proceed.

For now, your objective in Lavender Town is primarily to heal and prepare. You won't be able to progress through the Pokémon Tower. Your next destination will be Route 8 to the west, leading to Saffron City, or Route 12 to the south, which is currently blocked by a sleeping Snorlax. Most likely, you'll want to head west towards Saffron City, but be aware that you'll need to pass through another gatehouse where a thirsty guard will block your way until you bring him a drink from Celadon City.

Take a moment to absorb the unique ambiance of Lavender Town, but don't linger too long. Your adventure calls you onward!
