Evolution Methods (Level, Stone, Trade)
Understanding how your Pokémon evolve is crucial for building a powerful team in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. While many Pokémon simply evolve by gaining experience and leveling up, others require specific items or even a trading partner. This guide will break down each evolution method, providing actionable steps and locations for necessary items.
Level-Up Evolution
The most common evolution method, Level-Up Evolution, occurs when a Pokémon reaches a certain experience threshold and, consequently, a specific level. There are no special items or conditions required beyond battling and gaining experience points. Simply continue training your Pokémon, and once they hit their required level, they will attempt to evolve after the battle concludes or after gaining experience from an item like a Rare Candy.
- Actionable Step: Engage in battles against wild Pokémon or trainers. Use items like the Exp. Share (obtained from Professor Oak's Aide on Route 15 after catching 50 unique Pokémon) to distribute experience to Pokémon you want to evolve, even if they don't participate in every battle.
- Strategy Tip: Pay attention to your Pokémon's level. If you want to delay an evolution to learn a specific move at a lower level, you can press 'B' during the evolution animation to cancel it. The Pokémon will attempt to evolve again after its next level-up.
Stone Evolution
Certain Pokémon evolve when exposed to specific evolutionary stones. These stones are single-use items, so choose wisely which Pokémon you want to evolve. Once a Pokémon evolves via a stone, it typically stops learning new moves by leveling up, so consider teaching it desired moves beforehand.

Everstone
While not an evolutionary stone in the traditional sense, the Everstone prevents a Pokémon from evolving. This is useful if you want a Pokémon to learn moves at lower levels that its evolved form might not, or if you simply prefer its unevolved form.
- Location: Held by wild Geodude and Graveler (50% chance). You can also obtain one from a girl in the Celadon City Pokémon Center after showing her a Pokémon that knows the move "Attract."
- Actionable Step: Give the Everstone to the Pokémon you wish to prevent from evolving. It will hold the item and automatically cancel any evolution attempts.
Trade Evolution
Some Pokémon require a trade with another player to evolve. This means you'll need a link cable and another Game Boy Advance with a copy of FireRed or LeafGreen (or a compatible GBA game like Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald) and a trading partner. The Pokémon will evolve immediately upon being traded.
- Pokémon that evolve by trading:
- Kadabra into Alakazam
- Machoke into Machamp
- Haunter into Gengar
- Graveler into Golem
- Actionable Step:
- Connect two Game Boy Advance systems using a Game Boy Advance Link Cable.
- Both go to any Pokémon Center.
- Go upstairs to the Union Room (the room on the right).
- Talk to the attendant and select "Trade."
- Select the Pokémon you wish to trade. Once the trade is complete, the Pokémon will evolve on the receiving player's game.
- Strategy Tip: Coordinate with your trading partner beforehand. Ensure they are willing to trade your Pokémon back to you if you want to keep the evolved form. This is often referred to as a "tradeback."
