Trainer Card Details
Your Trainer Card provides a snapshot of your journey. Here's what you'll find:
- Your Name: The name you chose at the beginning of your adventure.
- Trainer ID: A unique five-digit number assigned to you. This is important for trading Pokémon with other players, as it helps identify the original trainer of a Pokémon.
- Money: Your current cash reserves. Essential for buying items, Poké Balls, and TMs!
- Play Time: The total amount of time you've spent playing the game. A fun way to see how dedicated you are!
- Pokedex: Displays the number of Pokémon you've seen and caught. This is a primary goal of the game, so keep an eye on this!
- Badges: A visual representation of the Gym Badges you've earned. This is a crucial indicator of your progress through the main story.
- Link Trades: The number of Pokémon you've traded with other players.
- Link Battles: The number of battles you've had against other players.
- Hall of Fame Entries: How many times you've defeated the Elite Four and become the Champion.
Earning Badges: The Path to the Pokémon League
Badges are the cornerstone of your Trainer Card and your journey. There are eight official Gym Badges to collect in Kanto. Each badge signifies your victory over a Gym Leader and grants you certain privileges, such as allowing higher-level Pokémon to obey you and enabling the use of specific HMs outside of battle.
Badge Acquisition Strategy
Follow these steps to systematically earn all eight badges:
- Boulder Badge (Pewter City):
- Gym Leader: Brock
- Type Specialty: Rock
- Key Pokémon: Geodude, Onix
- Strategy: Water-type or Grass-type Pokémon are highly effective. If you chose Squirtle or Bulbasaur as your starter, this gym will be relatively easy. Otherwise, consider catching a Nidoran (male or female) on Route 22 and evolving it, or a Mankey (FireRed) / Sandshrew (LeafGreen) on Route 22 or 3.
- Reward: Allows Pokémon up to Level 20 to obey you, enables use of HM01 Cut outside of battle (once obtained).
- Cascade Badge (Cerulean City):
- Gym Leader: Misty
- Type Specialty: Water
- Key Pokémon: Staryu, Starmie
- Strategy: Grass-type or Electric-type Pokémon are your best bet. Pikachu (Viridian Forest) or Bulbasaur (starter) will shine here. If you're struggling, consider teaching a Pokémon a Grass-type TM like TM08 Body Slam (if you have it) or TM28 Dig (from the Rocket Hideout later).
- Reward: Allows Pokémon up to Level 30 to obey you, enables use of HM03 Surf outside of battle (once obtained).
- Thunder Badge (Vermilion City):
- Gym Leader: Lt. Surge
- Type Specialty: Electric
- Key Pokémon: Voltorb, Pikachu, Raichu
- Strategy: Ground-type Pokémon are immune to Electric attacks and deal super effective damage. Diglett (Diglett's Cave) or Sandshrew (LeafGreen) are excellent choices.
- Reward: Allows Pokémon up to Level 40 to obey you, enables use of HM02 Fly outside of battle (once obtained).
- Rainbow Badge (Celadon City):
- Gym Leader: Erika
- Type Specialty: Grass
- Key Pokémon: Victreebel, Tangela, Vileplume
- Strategy: Fire-type, Flying-type, Bug-type, or Ice-type Pokémon are effective. Your starter Charmander (if chosen) will be a huge asset. Consider catching a Growlithe (FireRed) or Vulpix (LeafGreen) on Route 7 or 8.
- Reward: Allows Pokémon up to Level 50 to obey you, enables use of HM04 Strength outside of battle (once obtained).
- Soul Badge (Fuchsia City):
- Gym Leader: Koga
- Type Specialty: Poison
- Key Pokémon: Weezing, Muk, Golbat
- Strategy: Ground-type and Psychic-type Pokémon are strong against Poison. A Kadabra/Alakazam (evolved Abra from Route 24) or a Dugtrio (evolved Diglett) will be invaluable.
- Reward: Allows Pokémon up to Level 60 to obey you, enables use of HM02 Fly outside of battle (once obtained).
- Marsh Badge (Saffron City):
- Gym Leader: Sabrina
- Type Specialty: Psychic
- Key Pokémon: Kadabra, Mr. Mime, Venomoth, Alakazam
- Strategy: Bug-type, Ghost-type, and Dark-type Pokémon are super effective. However, pure Dark-types are not available until post-game. Consider using a strong Bug-type like Beedrill or Parasect, or a Ghost-type like Gastly/Haunter (Pokémon Tower). Normal-type Pokémon with strong physical attacks can also work.
- Reward: Allows Pokémon up to Level 70 to obey you, enables use of HM05 Flash outside of battle (once obtained).
- Volcano Badge (Cinnabar Island):
- Gym Leader: Blaine
- Type Specialty: Fire
- Key Pokémon: Growlithe, Ponyta, Arcanine, Rapidash
- Strategy: Water-type and Ground-type Pokémon are highly effective. Surf (HM03) is your friend here.
- Reward: Allows Pokémon up to Level 80 to obey you, enables use of HM06 Rock Smash outside of battle (once obtained).
- Earth Badge (Viridian City):
- Gym Leader: Giovanni
- Type Specialty: Ground
- Key Pokémon: Rhyhorn, Dugtrio, Nidoqueen, Nidoking, Rhydon
- Strategy: Water-type, Grass-type, and Ice-type Pokémon are excellent. Use Surf or a powerful Grass-type attack to sweep through his team.
- Reward: Allows all Pokémon to obey you, enables use of HM07 Waterfall outside of battle (once obtained).
Once you have all eight badges, you'll be granted access to Victory Road and the ultimate challenge: the Elite Four!
