Trade Mechanics & Version Exclusives

To truly complete your Pokédex in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, trading is not just recommended, it's absolutely essential! Many Pokémon are exclusive to one version or the other, and some even require trading to evolve. This section will guide you through the intricacies of trading and highlight all the Pokémon you'll need to swap to catch 'em all.

Setting Up for a Trade

Before you can trade, you'll need a few things:

  • Two Game Boy Advance systems: One for each player.
  • Two copies of the game: One FireRed and one LeafGreen (or another compatible GBA Pokémon game like Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald).
  • A Game Boy Advance Link Cable: This is crucial for connecting the two systems.
  • The Pokémon Center's Union Room or Cable Club: You'll access trading from these locations.

Walkthrough Steps:

  1. Both players must have at least two Pokémon in their party (you can't trade your last Pokémon!).
  2. Both players must have progressed far enough in the game to reach a Pokémon Center.
  3. Inside any Pokémon Center, head to the second floor.
  4. Approach the counter on the right. This is the Cable Club.
  5. Select "Trade Center."
  6. Both players will then enter a virtual room. Walk up to the trading table in the center and interact with it.
  7. Follow the on-screen prompts to select the Pokémon you wish to trade and confirm the exchange.

Important Note: You cannot trade Pokémon that know the HM moves Cut, Fly, Surf, Strength, or Flash if the receiving player does not have the corresponding Gym Badge to use that HM outside of battle. This is a common oversight, so plan your trades accordingly!

Version Exclusive Pokémon

Each version of the game contains unique Pokémon that can only be obtained by trading with the other version. Here's a comprehensive list:

Pokémon FireRed Exclusives:

Pokémon LeafGreen Exclusives:

If you own FireRed, you'll need to trade with a LeafGreen player for these:

  • Sandshrew (and its evolution, Sandslash)

Trade Evolutions

Certain Pokémon will only evolve when traded. This means you'll need to trade them to another game, and then ideally, trade them back to your original game if you want to keep them. communicate with your trading partner!

  • Kadabra evolves into Alakazam
  • Machoke evolves into Machamp
  • Haunter evolves into Gengar
  • Graveler evolves into Golem
  • Porygon evolves into Porygon2 (requires trading while holding an Upgrade, which is found in the Rocket Warehouse on Five Island)
  • Onix evolves into Steelix (requires trading while holding a Metal Coat, found on the S.S. Anne or given by Steven Stone in Vermilion City after the Elite Four)
  • Scyther evolves into Scizor (requires trading while holding a Metal Coat)
  • Seadra evolves into Kingdra (requires trading while holding a Dragon Scale, found in Cerulean Cave or held by wild Horsea/Seadra)

Strategy for Trade Evolutions: It's often best to level up these Pokémon as much as possible before trading, especially if they learn crucial moves at higher levels. For example, Haunter learns Shadow Ball at level 33, which is a powerful STAB move for Gengar.

Trading with Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald

After you've defeated the Elite Four and obtained the National Pokédex, you can also trade with Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald versions. This opens up access to many more Pokémon, including the Hoenn region's starters and legendary Pokémon. To do this, you'll need to:

  1. Complete the Sevii Islands questline in FireRed/LeafGreen to enable trading with Hoenn games. This involves delivering the Sapphire to Celio on One Island.
  2. Use the same Game Boy Advance Link Cable.
  3. Access the Cable Club in a Pokémon Center, just like with FireRed/LeafGreen trades.

This cross-game trading is essential for completing the full National Pokédex and bringing a wider variety of strategies to your team!
