Mastering TM and HM Usage
Technical Machines (TMs) and Hidden Machines (HMs) are invaluable tools in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, offering powerful moves that can be taught to your Pokémon and enabling progression through the game world. Understanding where to find each TM/HM and which Pokémon can learn them is crucial for both combat effectiveness and exploration.
HMs are particularly important as they are required to overcome certain obstacles. For example, Cut is needed to clear small trees blocking paths, Surf allows you to travel across water, and Strength is necessary to move large boulders. Unlike TMs, HMs cannot be deleted by the Move Deleter unless you have another HM or TM to replace it with, making careful consideration of which Pokémon learns them essential.
TMs, on the other hand, offer a wider variety of offensive and status-inflicting moves. They can be used once and then are gone, so it's important to use them on Pokémon that will benefit most from the move. Some TMs are found as rewards for completing certain tasks or defeating trainers, while others are purchased at Poké Marts.
Key HM Locations and Uses:
- HM01 Cut: Found in Vermilion City after defeating Lt. Surge. Required to clear small trees. Can be learned by many Normal, Grass, and Fighting-type Pokémon.
- HM02 Fly: Obtained from Professor Oak after showing him 50 different Pokémon in your Pokédex. Allows fast travel between previously visited towns. Learnable by many Flying-type Pokémon and some others.
- HM03 Surf: Given by the man in the house west of Fuchsia City after obtaining the Warden's item in the Safari Zone. Essential for traversing water routes. Learned by many Water-types and some others.
- HM04 Strength: Found in the Safari Zone. Used to push large boulders. Primarily learned by Rock, Ground, and some Fighting-type Pokémon.
- HM05 Flash: Obtained in Route 2, given by a man in a house. Used to illuminate dark caves like Rock Tunnel. Learned by many Normal and Psychic-type Pokémon.
When deciding which Pokémon should learn an HM, consider its base stats and type. A Pokémon that can effectively use the HM in battle will make your team more versatile. For instance, a strong Water-type Pokémon learning Surf can be a powerful offensive asset. Similarly, a Flying-type Pokémon learning Fly can be a reliable attacker and a convenient travel tool.
