Post-Game Activities & Kanto Dex Completion
Congratulations, Trainer! Defeating the Elite Four and becoming the Champion of the Kanto region is a monumental achievement. However, your journey is far from over. A wealth of new adventures, challenges, and opportunities for Kanto Pokédex completion await you in the post-game!
Unlocking the Sevii Islands & National Pokédex
Your first major step into the post-game involves gaining access to the mysterious Sevii Islands and upgrading your Pokédex. Follow these crucial steps:
- Kanto Dex Requirement: Before anything else, you must have encountered at least 60 different Pokémon in your Kanto Pokédex. This means simply seeing them in battle or catching them. If you haven't met this requirement, spend some time exploring Kanto's routes and caves to fill out your entries.
- Visit Professor Oak: Once you've met the 60 Pokémon encountered requirement, fly back to Pallet Town and speak with Professor Oak in his lab. He will be impressed by your progress and will upgrade your Pokédex to the National Pokédex, allowing you to register Pokémon from other regions. Your rival, Blue, will also be present and receive his upgrade.
- Head to One Island: With the National Pokédex in hand, make your way to Vermilion City and speak with Bill in the Pokémon Center. He will offer to take you to One Island. Accept his offer.
- Meet Celio: On One Island, find Celio in the Pokémon Center. He is working on a machine to link the Pokémon storage system across regions and needs your help. He will give you the Rainbow Pass, which grants you access to Islands Four through Seven.
The Sevii Islands Saga: Ruby and Sapphire
Celio's machine requires two specific gems: the Ruby and the Sapphire. This quest will take you across several of the Sevii Islands.
Retrieving the Ruby (One Island)
- Kindle Road & Mt. Ember: From the One Island Pokémon Center, head north through Kindle Road. You'll encounter several trainers and wild Pokémon.
- Team Rocket Encounter: Continue north to Mt. Ember. You'll find two Team Rocket Grunts guarding a cave entrance. Defeat them in battle.
- Inside Mt. Ember: Enter the cave. You'll need a Pokémon with HM04 Strength to move boulders inside. Navigate the cave, battling more Team Rocket members.
- The Ruby: Deep within the cave, you'll find the Ruby. Collect it and return to Celio on One Island.
- Deliver the Ruby: Give the Ruby to Celio. He will be grateful but will inform you that he still needs the Sapphire.
Retrieving the Sapphire (Six Island & Five Island)
- Six Island & Dotted Hole: With the Rainbow Pass, travel to Six Island. Head south from the port to the Dotted Hole. You'll need a Pokémon with HM01 Cut to enter.
- Dotted Hole Puzzle: Inside the Dotted Hole, you'll encounter a series of holes. This is a navigation puzzle.
- On the first floor, jump into the single hole.
- On the next four floors, you'll find four holes. The correct sequence to jump into them is: Up, Left, Right, Down.
- Team Rocket's Secret Base: After successfully navigating the Dotted Hole, you'll find yourself in a hidden area. You'll discover a Team Rocket scientist who has the Sapphire. He will flee to Five Island.
- Five Island & Rocket Warehouse: Travel to Five Island. Head to the Rocket Warehouse located on the island.
- Defeat Team Rocket: Battle through the Rocket Warehouse, defeating numerous Team Rocket Grunts and Executives.
- The Sapphire: After defeating the final Team Rocket leader (Gideon in FireRed, Archer in LeafGreen), you will retrieve the Sapphire.
- Return to Celio: Bring the Sapphire back to Celio on One Island. He will finally complete his machine, allowing for trading with Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald versions!
Post-Sevii Islands Activities & Kanto Dex Completion
With the Sevii Islands quest completed, even more opportunities open up for you:
- Cerulean Cave (Unknown Dungeon): Now that you've proven your "great achievement" by completing the Sevii Islands quest, the guard blocking Cerulean Cave (west of Cerulean City) will allow you entry. This cave is home to the legendary Pokémon Mewtwo, one of the strongest Pokémon in the game. Be prepared for a tough battle and bring plenty of Ultra Balls!
- Legendary Beasts (FireRed/LeafGreen Specific):
- In FireRed, after defeating the Elite Four and obtaining the National Pokédex, Raikou and Entei will roam Kanto. Their locations are random and they flee after one turn, so prepare with Mean Look/Arena Trap/Shadow Tag users and Quick Balls.
- In LeafGreen, Suicune will roam Kanto under the same conditions.
- Four Island's Icefall Cave: Explore Icefall Cave on Four Island further. After Lorelei deals with Team Rocket, you can return to the cave's deepest parts to find the HM07 Waterfall. You can also catch additional Lapras here.
- Trainer Rematches: Many trainers throughout Kanto, including Gym Leaders, will become available for rematches. Use your Vs. Seeker to find them and earn more experience and money. Gym Leaders will have stronger teams.
- Catching All Kanto Pokémon: Your ultimate goal for Kanto Dex completion is to catch all 150 (or 151 if you include Mew, which is event-only) Pokémon native to the Kanto region. This will involve:
- Version Exclusives: Trading with the opposite version (FireRed or LeafGreen) is essential to obtain Pokémon like Arbok/Sandshrew, Vulpix/Growlithe, Meowth/Mankey, Bellsprout/Oddish, and Pinsir/Scyther.
- Evolution: Evolve all your Pokémon through leveling, evolutionary stones (e.g., Fire Stone for Arcanine, Water Stone for Vaporeon), and trading (e.g., Kadabra to Alakazam, Machoke to Machamp).
- Safari Zone: Spend time in the Safari Zone to catch rare Pokémon like Chansey, Kangaskhan, and Tauros.
- Fishing: Use the Old Rod, Good Rod, and Super Rod to catch various Water-type Pokémon.
- Game Corner: Purchase Pokémon like Abra, Clefairy, and Dratini with coins at the Celadon Game Corner.
- Trainer Tower (Seven Island): Challenge the Trainer Tower on Seven Island for various battle challenges and rewards.
- Bond Bridge (Five Island): Explore Bond Bridge on Five Island, where you can find various items and trainers.
- Lost Cave (Five Island): A confusing maze-like cave on Five Island with rare items and Pokémon.
Completing your Kanto Pokédex and exploring all the Sevii Islands offers a rich and rewarding post-game experience, truly testing your skills as a Pokémon Trainer!
