Pokémon Day Care

The Pokémon Day Care is a fantastic facility located on Route 5, nestled between Cerulean City and Saffron City. It's an invaluable resource for trainers looking to level up their Pokémon passively, or for those interested in the fascinating world of Pokémon breeding. While breeding isn't available until the post-game in FireRed and LeafGreen, the Day Care still serves a crucial purpose early on.

Location and Access

You'll first encounter the Day Care on Route 5. To reach it:

  1. From Cerulean City, head south through the gatehouse.
  2. Alternatively, from Saffron City, head north through the gatehouse.

The Day Care building is easily recognizable. Inside, you'll find an old man and an old woman who run the facility.

How the Day Care Works

The Pokémon Day Care allows you to drop off one Pokémon (pre-Elite Four) for a small fee. While your Pokémon is in their care, it will gain experience points as you walk around the game world. This is an excellent way to level up weaker Pokémon, or to train a Pokémon you don't frequently use in battle, without having to actively participate in combat.

Depositing a Pokémon

  1. Speak to the old woman inside the Day Care.
  2. She will ask if you want to leave a Pokémon with her. Select "Yes."
  3. Choose the Pokémon you wish to deposit from your party.
  4. She will inform you of the daily fee (which is actually paid upon retrieval).

Important Note: While in the Day Care, your Pokémon will not evolve, even if it reaches the appropriate level. You'll need to retrieve it and level it up once more in battle for it to evolve. Furthermore, any held items will be returned to your bag when you deposit the Pokémon.

Retrieving a Pokémon

  1. Speak to the old man inside the Day Care.
  2. He will inform you how much experience your Pokémon has gained and the total cost.
  3. The cost is calculated as 100 Pokedollars for depositing the Pokémon, plus an additional 100 Pokedollars for every level it gained. For example, if your Pokémon gained 5 levels, the cost would be 100 + (5 * 100) = 600 Pokedollars.
  4. Pay the fee, and your Pokémon will be returned to your party. Make sure you have an open slot in your party before attempting to retrieve it!

Strategies for Using the Day Care

  • Passive Leveling: This is the primary use for the Day Care in FireRed and LeafGreen. Deposit a Pokémon you want to train but don't want to use in battle, such as a newly caught Pokémon or one that's significantly under-leveled. Then, go about your adventures – exploring, battling trainers, or even just running around in circles – and your deposited Pokémon will steadily gain experience.
  • Early Game Advantage: Consider depositing a Pokémon that evolves at a high level or one that you want to save for later in the game. For instance, if you catch a Magikarp early on, you can deposit it and let it gain levels towards evolving into Gyarados while you focus on other tasks.
  • Cost-Effective Training: While it costs money, the Day Care can be more time-efficient than grinding for experience, especially if you're short on time or want to focus on other aspects of the game. Just be mindful of the cumulative cost if you leave a Pokémon for a very long time.
  • Move Management: Be aware that Pokémon in the Day Care will learn new moves as they level up, potentially overwriting older moves. If there's a specific move you want your Pokémon to keep, make sure it's not in the Day Care when it would learn a new move at that level. You can check a Pokémon's learnset on various online resources to plan accordingly.

The Pokémon Day Care is a simple yet effective tool for any trainer in Kanto. use it wisely to build a stronger, more diverse team without the constant need for active battling!
