Glitches & Exploits
While Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen are generally stable games, a few interesting glitches and exploits can be leveraged by savvy trainers. These can range from minor visual oddities to game-changing advantages, allowing you to acquire rare items, duplicate Pokémon, or even bypass certain game mechanics. Use these at your own discretion, as some may impact game stability or your save file.
Item Duplication Glitch (Two-Player Method)
This exploit allows you to duplicate almost any held item, including rare berries, evolution stones, and even Master Balls, provided you have access to a second Game Boy Advance and a link cable with another copy of FireRed or LeafGreen.
Requirements:
- Two Game Boy Advance systems.
- Two copies of Pokémon FireRed or LeafGreen (can be different versions).
- A Game Boy Advance Link Cable.
- At least one Pokémon holding the item you wish to duplicate on your game.
- A "junk" Pokémon on the other player's game that they are willing to lose.
Walkthrough Steps:
- Prepare Your Pokémon: On your game, give the item you want to duplicate to a Pokémon. For example, if you want to duplicate a Master Ball, have a Pokémon hold it.
- Initiate a Trade: Connect both Game Boy Advance systems with the link cable. Go to any Pokémon Center and access the Union Room (upstairs, right counter). Both enter the Union Room.
- Start the Trade: Both talk to the attendant and select "Trade."
- Select Pokémon for Trade:
- Your Game: Select the Pokémon holding the item you want to duplicate.
- Other Player's Game: Select the "junk" Pokémon they are willing to lose.
- Confirm the Trade: Both confirm the trade. The trade animation will begin.
- Crucial Timing: As soon as the message "COMMUNICATION... Please wait." appears on the screen, and before the message "Trade completed!" appears, the other player (the one receiving your item) should turn off their Game Boy Advance.
- Verify Duplication:
- Your Game: The trade will fail, and your Pokémon (still holding the duplicated item) will return to your party.
- Other Player's Game: When the other player restarts their game, they will find that they also have the Pokémon (and thus the item) that was being traded to them.
- Repeat for More: You can repeat this process as many times as you like to create multiple copies of the desired item.
Important Notes:
- This glitch relies on interrupting the save process of the receiving game. If the other player turns off their system too late, the trade will complete normally, and you will lose your item. If they turn it off too early, the trade might not even register.
- Always use a "junk" Pokémon on the receiving end, as that Pokémon will be permanently lost from their game if the glitch is performed correctly.
- This method is generally safe for your save file if performed correctly, as your game's save data is not corrupted.
Walk Through Walls Glitch (Requires Action Replay/Emulator Cheats)
While not a native in-game glitch, the "Walk Through Walls" cheat code, commonly used with Action Replay devices or emulator cheat functions, is a powerful exploit that allows players to bypass physical barriers in the game world. This can be used to reach inaccessible areas, skip trainers, or acquire items prematurely.
Requirements:
- A Game Boy Advance with an Action Replay device, or an emulator with cheat code functionality.
- The specific "Walk Through Walls" cheat code for FireRed/LeafGreen. (A common code is:
78DA95DF 44018CB4and8E61EC59 141446B0). Note that codes can vary slightly depending on the Action Replay version or emulator.
Walkthrough Steps:
- Activate the Cheat: Enter the "Walk Through Walls" cheat code into your Action Replay device or emulator's cheat menu and ensure it is activated.
- Navigate Freely: Once activated, your character will be able to move through most solid objects, including walls, trees, rocks, and even bodies of water without needing HMs like Surf or Cut.
- Explore and Exploit:
- Early Item Access: You can walk through the walls of buildings to reach areas with items like Rare Candies or TMs before you're supposed to.
- Bypass Trainers: Easily walk around challenging trainers on routes or in gyms.
- Access Glitched Areas: Sometimes, walking through certain boundaries can lead to "void" areas or glitched map segments. Be cautious, as saving in these areas can potentially corrupt your save file.
- Reach Mew/Deoxys Event Locations: While the actual event items (Old Sea Map, Aurora Ticket) are required to trigger the events, walking to the islands (Faraway Island for Mew, Birth Island for Deoxys) with this cheat will simply show you an empty island. The event Pokémon will not appear without the proper triggers.
- Deactivate the Cheat: It is crucial to deactivate the "Walk Through Walls" cheat when you are done using it, especially before saving your game in a "normal" location. Leaving it active can sometimes lead to unexpected behavior or graphical glitches.
Important Notes:
- Save File Corruption Risk: Saving your game while in a glitched or "void" area accessed via this cheat can lead to irreversible save file corruption. Always save in a safe, normal location after deactivating the cheat.
- Game Progression: While you can bypass trainers, you still need to defeat Gym Leaders and complete story events to progress the game normally.
- Event Pokémon: This cheat alone does not grant access to event Pokémon like Mew or Deoxys; it only allows you to reach their physical locations.
MissingNo. (Gen 1 Glitch - Not in FRLG)
It's important to clarify that the infamous "MissingNo." glitch from the original Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow versions does not exist in FireRed and LeafGreen. The game engine was significantly updated, and the programming vulnerabilities that allowed for MissingNo. to appear were patched out. Attempting similar methods from the Gen 1 games will not yield the same results and could potentially lead to crashes or other unintended behavior.
While FireRed and LeafGreen offer a more polished experience, these documented exploits provide a glimpse into the ways You can interact with the game's code. Use them wisely, and always consider the potential risks!
