Repel Usage

Repels are invaluable items in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, allowing you to traverse areas with wild Pokémon without constant interruptions. Understanding their mechanics and strategic application can save you time, Poké Balls, and sanity.

How Repels Work

When you use a Repel, it prevents encounters with wild Pokémon whose levels are lower than or equal to the level of your lead Pokémon. This effect lasts for a set number of steps, depending on the type of Repel used. If your lead Pokémon faints or is switched out for a lower-leveled Pokémon, the Repel's effect will immediately end if the new lead's level is no longer sufficient to repel the area's wild Pokémon.

Types of Repels and Acquisition

There are three main types of Repels, each with varying durations and costs:

  • Repel: The basic version. Lasts for 100 steps. Costs 300 Poké Dollars.
  • Super Repel: A more potent version. Lasts for 200 steps. Costs 500 Poké Dollars.
  • Max Repel: The strongest Repel available. Lasts for 250 steps. Costs 700 Poké Dollars.

You can purchase all types of Repels at most Poké Marts throughout Kanto. Early game, you'll find Repels in Viridian City and Pewter City. As you progress, Super Repels become available, and Max Repels can be bought in later towns like Celadon City.

Strategic Repel Application

1. Avoiding Unwanted Encounters

The primary use of Repels is to bypass areas with wild Pokémon you don't wish to catch or battle. This is particularly useful when:

  • Backtracking: When returning through areas like Viridian Forest or Mt. Moon after already exploring them thoroughly.
  • Speedrunning: If you're trying to reach a specific destination quickly without distractions.
  • Navigating Caves: Caves like Mt. Moon, Rock Tunnel, and Victory Road are notorious for high encounter rates. Using Repels here can make the journey much smoother.

2. The "Repel Trick" for Specific Pokémon

This advanced strategy allows you to target specific, higher-leveled Pokémon in an area by filtering out lower-leveled ones. Here's how it works:

  1. Identify your Target: Determine the exact level of the rare Pokémon you want to encounter. For example, if you're hunting for a specific Pokémon on Route 10 that appears at Level 18, and all other Pokémon on that route are Level 17 or lower.
  2. Prepare your Lead: Place a Pokémon in the first slot of your party that is one level below your target Pokémon. In our example, you would put a Level 17 Pokémon at the front of your party.
  3. Activate Repel: Use a Super Repel or Max Repel.
  4. Walk and Encounter: Now, as you walk through the tall grass or cave, the Repel will prevent encounters with any Pokémon Level 17 or below. This significantly increases the chances of encountering your Level 18 target, as it's the only Pokémon whose level is higher than your lead's and thus not repelled.

This trick is especially effective in areas with a wide range of wild Pokémon levels, or when hunting for rare Pokémon that appear at a specific, higher level than the common encounters.

3. Conserving Resources

By preventing battles, Repels indirectly conserve your Pokémon's HP and PP, reducing the need for Potions, Ethers, and trips back to the Pokémon Center. This is crucial during long dungeon crawls or when you're low on healing items.

Important Considerations

  • Lead Pokémon Level: Always ensure your lead Pokémon is at the appropriate level for the Repel to be effective against the wild Pokémon in the area.
  • Underwater/Surfing: Repels do not work when Surfing or diving in areas with wild Pokémon.
  • Trainer Battles: Repels have no effect on Trainer battles.
  • Stock Up: It's always a good idea to carry a decent supply of Super Repels or Max Repels, especially before entering major caves or long routes.
