Pokémon Tower & Lavender Town

Welcome to Lavender Town, a quiet, somber village known for its distinctive, slightly unsettling music and the towering Pokémon Tower. This area is crucial for advancing the story, but be warned: the tower is haunted!

Lavender Town Exploration

Upon entering Lavender Town, take a moment to explore the small town before venturing into the tower. There are a few key locations and items to grab:

  • Pokémon Center: Heal your Pokémon here. You'll likely need it after the tower.
  • Mart: Stock up on any supplies you might need, especially healing items and Poké Balls if you plan on catching any Ghost-type Pokémon later.
  • Name Rater's House: Located to the west of the Pokémon Center, the Name Rater can change the nicknames of any Pokémon you've caught. He won't change the names of traded Pokémon.
  • House with a Maniac: In the house just south of the Pokémon Tower, a man will tell you about the tower and its ghostly inhabitants.
  • Hidden Item: Check the patch of grass near the back of the Pokémon Center for a hidden Super Potion.

Pokémon Tower Ascent - Initial Exploration (Without Silph Scope)

The Pokémon Tower is a seven-story burial ground for deceased Pokémon. It's infested with Ghost-type Pokémon and Team Rocket Grunts. You'll need the Silph Scope to properly identify the Ghost Pokémon, but for now, you can still battle the Trainers and collect items. Be aware that without the Silph Scope, any unidentified "Ghost" you encounter cannot be battled or caught, and will simply scare your Pokémon away.

Floor 1 (Ground Floor)
  • Entrance: You'll immediately notice the eerie atmosphere. Head north.
  • Item: In the northwest corner of the first floor, you can find an Escape Rope.
  • Trainer Battle: There's a Channeler here, but you can avoid her if you stick to the edges.
Floor 2
  • Item: In the center of the room, you'll find an X Accuracy.
  • Trainer Battles: Two Channelers patrol this floor. Their Ghost-type Pokémon (Gastly, Haunter) are immune to Normal and Fighting-type moves. Consider using Psychic or Dark-type moves if you have them, or strong Special Attacks from other types.
Floor 3
  • Item: In the southwest corner of this floor, you can pick up a Great Ball.
  • Trainer Battles: Expect more Channelers.
Floor 4

This floor is where things get interesting. You'll encounter your rival here, who will challenge you to a battle.

  • Rival Battle Strategy: Your rival's team will be stronger than before. Be prepared for his Pidgeotto, Kadabra, and your starter's evolved form. Exploit type weaknesses:
    • Pidgeotto: Electric, Rock, Ice
    • Kadabra: Bug, Ghost, Dark
    • Venusaur (if you chose Charmander): Fire, Ice, Flying, Psychic
    • Charizard (if you chose Squirtle): Water, Electric, Rock
    • Blastoise (if you chose Bulbasaur): Grass, Electric
He also has a Gyarados (Electric, Rock) and Growlithe (Water, Ground, Rock) or Exeggcute (Fire, Ice, Flying, Poison, Bug, Ghost, Dark).
  • Item: After defeating your rival, head to the northeast corner for a Cleanse Tag. This item, when held, slightly reduces the encounter rate of wild Pokémon.
  • Trainer Battles: More Channelers are present.
Floor 5
  • Item: In the southwest corner, you'll find a Lift Key (not for this tower, but for a later location).
  • Trainer Battles: More Channelers.
Floor 6
  • Item: A Nugget can be found in the northwest corner.
  • Trainer Battles: This floor has more Channelers.
Floor 7 (Top Floor) - Initial Encounter

You won't be able to proceed past the large ghostly presence on this floor without the Silph Scope. For now, you'll be forced to retreat. This is a good time to heal up and prepare for your next destination, Celadon City, where you'll acquire the necessary item to deal with the tower's spectral guardian.

  • Ghost Encounter: A large, unidentifiable ghost blocks your path. You cannot battle or interact with it without the Silph Scope.

After your initial foray into the Pokémon Tower, your next objective is to head west from Lavender Town, through Route 8, to reach Celadon City. You'll need to acquire the Silph Scope there to properly challenge the tower's mysteries.

Pokémon Tower Ascent - Return with Silph Scope

Once you have obtained the Silph Scope from the Rocket Hideout in Celadon City, return to Lavender Town and re-enter the Pokémon Tower. Now you can identify the mysterious Ghosts and proceed to the top floor.

Wild Pokémon Encounters (All Floors)

With the Silph Scope, you can now identify and battle the wild Pokémon within the tower. These are primarily Ghost-types:

  • Gastly (Common): Ghost/Poison. Weak to Psychic, Ground, Ghost, Dark. Immune to Normal, Fighting.
  • Haunter (Uncommon): Ghost/Poison. Weak to Psychic, Ground, Ghost, Dark. Immune to Normal, Fighting.
  • Cubone (Rare): Ground. Weak to Water, Grass, Ice.

Strategy Tip: Psychic-type Pokémon are excellent here, as they are super effective against both Gastly and Haunter. Ground-type moves are also effective. Be cautious of Haunter's Hypnosis and Dream Eater combination.

Floor 6 - The Ghost of Marowak

As you ascend to the 6th floor, you will encounter a unique, unidentifiable Ghost blocking the staircase. With the Silph Scope, this Ghost is revealed to be the spirit of a Marowak, the mother of the Cubone you met in Pokémon House. You cannot catch this Pokémon, and you must defeat it to proceed.

  • Ghost Marowak Battle: This Marowak is a Ground-type. It's a strong opponent for this stage of the game.
    • Recommended Types: Water, Grass, Ice.
    • Strategy: Marowak has high Attack. Focus on hitting its weaknesses and try to lower its stats or inflict status conditions if possible.
  • Aftermath: Upon its defeat, the Marowak's spirit will ascend, finally finding peace. This allows you to continue to the 7th floor.
Floor 7 (Top Floor) - Mr. Fuji and Team Rocket

With the Marowak's spirit gone, you can now reach the top floor. Here, you'll find Mr. Fuji, surrounded by Team Rocket Grunts.

  • Team Rocket Encounters: You will engage in a series of battles against three Team Rocket Grunts. Their Pokémon are typically Poison-types (Zubat, Koffing, Grimer) and Normal-types (Rattata, Raticate).
    • Grunt 1: Raticate (L25), Arbok (L25)
    • Grunt 2: Koffing (L23), Zubat (L23), Grimer (L23)
    • Grunt 3: Meowth (L25), Grimer (L25)
Strategy: Ground and Psychic-type moves are highly effective against most of their Pokémon. Be prepared for status conditions like Poison.
  • Rescuing Mr. Fuji: After defeating all the Team Rocket Grunts, they will flee, and Mr. Fuji will be safe.
  • Rewards from Mr. Fuji: As a token of his gratitude, Mr. Fuji will give you two incredibly important items:
    • Poké Flute: This item can be used to wake up sleeping Pokémon, most notably the Snorlax blocking Route 12 and Route 16.
    • Silph Scope: (If you didn't already have it; this is the primary reward for clearing the tower). This item allows you to identify invisible Ghosts.

Congratulations! You have successfully cleared the Pokémon Tower, brought peace to the spirits, and acquired essential items for your journey. The path to Fuchsia City and beyond is now open!
